FEF – First Episode Friday RETURNS! Today’s FEF – First Episode Friday is the Classic, “Hawaii Five-O” starring John Joseph Patrick Ryan best known by his stage name, Jack Lord. It’s a good bet Jack Lord was the basis of John Patrick "Jack" Ryan, the Tom Clancy character! Jack Lord, was a film and Broadway actor, a director, and producer. He was known for his starring role as Steve McGarrett in the TV Hit Hawaii Five-O from 1968 to 1980 Born in Brooklyn, New York, Lord was the son of Irish-American parents. His father, William Lawrence Ryan, was a steamship company executive who grew up in Morris Park (now known as Richmond Hill), Queens, New York. Lord attended the United States Merchant Marine Academy, located at Fort Trumbull in New London, Connecticut, graduating as an Ensign with a Third Mates License. He attended New York University (NYU) on a football scholarship, and earned a degree in Fine Arts. He spent the first year of the United States' involvement in World War II with the United States Army Corps of Engineers, building bridges in Persia. He returned to the Merchant Marine as an Able Seaman before enrolling in the deck officer course at Fort Trumbull. While making maritime training films, he took to the idea of acting. Lord starred in many popular movies and TV Shows ranging from the James Bond film Dr. No. to the TV series Stoney Burke, a rodeo cowboy from Mission Ridge, South Dakota. Lord credited Gary Cooper as his on-screen role model, and the inspiration for his characterization of Stoney Burke. Lord guest-starred as Colonel 'Pres' Gallagher in second-season episode 5, "Big Brother" of 12 O-Clock High and other television guest appearances including Appointment with Adventure, The Americans, Bonanza, The High Chaparral, Combat!, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., The Reporter starring Harry Guardino, The Fugitive, The Invaders, Rawhide, Ironside, and The F.B.I. According to William Shatner, in 1966, Gene Roddenberry offered Lord the role of Captain James T. Kirk on Star Trek, to replace Jeffrey Hunter, whose wife was making too many demands. Lord asked for 50 percent ownership of the show, so Roddenberry offered the role to Shatner. Jack Lord helped conceive Hawaii Five-O and starred for its 12 seasons as Detective Stephen McGarrett, appointed by the Governor to head the (fictional) State Police criminal investigation department in Honolulu, Hawaii. The opening sequence includes a shot of Lord standing on a penthouse balcony of The Ilikai hotel. Chin Ho Kelly, the name of the police detective played by Kam Fong, was a tip-of-the-hat to Ilikai developer Chinn Ho. He was instrumental in the casting of native Hawaiians, instead of mainland actors. Lord was a perfectionist. At the airing of its last episode, Hawaii Five-O was the longest-running cop show in television history. When series creator Leonard Freeman died in 1974, the show's ownership was shared among Lord, CBS and Freeman's estate, with a contract that made Lord executive producer and gave him complete control over content. He was a hands-on partner who paid attention to minute details, and was known for battles with network executives. It seems natives of Queens NY are Detailed Oriented, Perfectionists, Hands On, and Philanthropists. Sound like a 45th?!! Definitely!! Lord was a philanthropist and his entire estate went to Hawaiian charities upon his wife Marie's death in 2005 McGarrett carried a Smith & Wesson Chief's Special, Model 36. The Model 36 was designed in the era just after World War II, when Smith & Wesson stopped producing war materials and resumed normal production. For the Model 36, they sought to design a revolver that could fire the more powerful .38 Special round in a small, concealable package. Since the older I-frame was not able to handle this load, a new frame was designed, which became the Smith & Wesson J-frame. The new design was introduced at the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) convention in 1950, and was favorably received. A vote was held to name the new revolver, and the name "Chiefs Special" won. A three-inch barreled version of this design went into production immediately, due to high demand. It was available in either a blued or nickel plated finish. It was produced as the "Chiefs Special" until 1957, when it then became the Model 36. The "Chiefs Special" continued to be manufactured as a separate variant. Whether you are as dapper and cool as Steve McGarrett, recite poetry on the set, or have a cool catchphrase like, "Book 'em, Danno!", carrying an AmmOmug will give you the same “Air of Cool”! Have a terrific weekend!

Patriot Tuesday The Public Garden, also known as Boston Public Garden, is a large park located in the heart of Boston, Massachusetts, adjacent to Boston Common. The Public Garden was established in 1837, when philanthropist Horace Gray[4] petitioned for the use of land as the first public botanical garden in the United States. Located at the Arlington Street gate is the Equestrian Statue of George Washington (with his AmmOmug in hand), by Thomas Ball in 1869, which faces Commonwealth Avenue.
