Hippos of Africa, also called river horses, are large animals. They are the third largest living land animals in Africa. First comes the African elephants, then the elusive rhinos and the hippos are in third place. The Latin word hippopotamus comes from the Greek word hippopotamos which means “river horse”. Hippos cannot swim as they are too dense to float, but instead they sink and walk along the lakes and riverbeds. Hippos habitat is lakes and rivers, as they spend most of the day in the water. On The Prowl - The Tiger‘s eye. Up close and personal.⁠ ⁠ Explore the incredible details in his eye with the beautiful fur pattern on the face. When this majestic tiger passed our vehicle, I was able to take this close-up photo of his eye. Bengal tigers are the largest animals in the big cat family globally. However, African lions come close to the size of the tigers. Due to poaching and habitats decline, these wild animals are indeed an endangered species. Bengal Tiger Eye Bengal tiger eyes have a binocular vision to judge the distance to their prey. During the day, they can see nearly as much as humans. That is quite impressive compared to other animals. It is also not necessary for their purpose. To see three-dimensional perception and depth perception is the primary function. Tigers mainly hunt during the night due to their excellent night vision. They see about six times better than humans at night. As you see in this photograph, the round pupil allows a maximum of light to enter the eye at night. During the day, they as well see colors. She has you in her eyes 😉 Every very muscle ready to make the big jump. With their powerful hind legs, lions can jump approximately 12-13 meters / 40-45 feet. This is quite a distance. We should not underestimate it. Nevertheless, this lioness did not jump. After a little while, she relaxed to continue her routine, sleeping! A few facts about lions: * Lions do tiptoe when hunting. While on the prowl, their heels won’t touch the ground. Of course, the lionesses stalk silently. Their prey should not hear them. * Female lions are the primary hunters. Only with larger prey, the male lions will help. * Young lions start to help hunting when they are about one year of age. * Lions sleep approximately 20 hours a day, especially after a meal. * Undoubtedly, in the wild live not as many lions as we may think. Approximately 23,000 lions are roaming in the wild. * Lions do climb trees as the leopards do. Late afternoon we came across a lion pride which just killed a Buffalo. From time to time more came in to have dinner. I always feel sorry for the animals getting eaten, also wondering what they think all day! Do you know?
