For everyone’s information:

The plan for the 17th, when the adult content ban comes in, is to protest.

To do that, we are making as much noise either side of the 17th as possible, and using the site as normal.

On the 17th, dead silence.

People are saying log off but what they really mean is don’t open the site or the app.

But, on the 17th make as much noise as possible on every other platform. Tweet about it and post on facebook and instagram and everywhere else.

What this does is causes a massive dip in ad revenue for one single day. That does not make staff think ‘oh everyone’s gone let’s shut down.’ What it actually makes them think is ‘oh shit people aren’t happy and if people don’t keep using our site we’re out of money and out of jobs.’

A boycott reminds a company that the users (consumers) have the power to make their site (business) worthless with one single coordinated decision.

If you want to join in, here’s what to do:

Do:

Close all open instances of the app and site on all your devices before the 17th

Make posts before and after the 17th on tumblr and other platforms, talking about why this ban is bad

Make posts on other sites during the 17th. Flood the official tumblr staff twitter and facebook with your anger and your opinion

Come back on the 18th and check in

Don’t:

Delete the app from your phone (this doesn’t affect their revenue and since it’s off the store at the moment it’ll be hard to get back)

Delete your account. I mean you can if you want to, but if you keep your account and don’t use it you’re saying to staff that there’s still time to save it. If you delete it’s hard work to come back.

Open the app or website (including specific blogs)

Make any posts (turn down/off your queue and make sure nothing is scheduled)

Go quiet elsewhere. Make it clear that this is just about tumblr, not a mass move away from all social media.

Remember: the execs don’t care about anything but money. Shutting down the site means there’s $0 further income from it. That’s their last possible course of action. If we make it clear we’re not happy, they’ll have to do something or we can do more and more until it becomes too expensive.

Protests take commitment. They’re a defiant action against a business that is doing something wrong. They will try to scare you into not participating, because they’re scared. We hold all the power here, sometimes the execs just need to be reminded of that.

LGBT Representation: Red Rising

Another post I’ve been waiting to make. Official art of Ephriam by Magali Villanueve. Fanart of Matteo by @paranoart All other fanart by @phantomrin. 

For as much LGBT representation as Red Rising has, I tend to get so caught up in the emotions of the story that except for big things like Trigg mentioning being engaged to a dude or Quicksilver referring to Matteo as his husband, I tend to miss the little things like the supporting characters who were dating or fwb in between books. 

Harmony (Bisexual)

Introduced: 2014 (Book I: Red Rising)

Pierce had already confirmed she was Bisexual on Twitter but it took until my third read-through of Golden Son for me to realize that she and Evey had been dating in between books. 

Evey (Unspecified)

Introduced: 2014 (Book I: Red Rising)

I’d read Golden Son three times but even knowing from Pierce’s twitter that Evey was attracted to women, I was so caught up in the drama of the overarching story that it took three times for me to notice the scene where Harmony and Evey kiss at the Sons of Ares warehouse in the first quarter of the book. 

Matteo (Gay)

Introduced: 2014 (Book I: Red Rising)

In the first book, Matteo’s sexuality was ambiguous, with only his comment about knowing his way around a scrotum as the only indication he wasn’t straight (which in retrospect, the fact that the protagonist’s culture was deliberately engineered by the ruling class to be as heteronormative as possible, it makes sense that Darrow wouldn’t notice some of his friends and comrades weren’t straight until later on). Then it was explicitly confirmed when he shows up in Book III alongside his husband.

Cassius au Bellona (Bisexual)

Introduced: 2014 (Book I: Red Rising)

Unlike a lot of other LGBT characters in this series, Cassius’ sexuality doesn’t really get alluded to (other than the implication of him trying to start a threesome with a male and female Pink in Iron Gold), but he has so many moments of romantic subtext with Darrow that all we need for his unrequited crush on the Reaper to be canon is confirmation from Pierce. 

Roque au Fabii (Bisexual)

Introduced: 2014 (Book I: Red Rising)

Another case where I had to read the books multiple times to realize that Roque was in love with Tactus as well as Quinn. 

Tactus au Rath (Bisexual)

Introduced: 2014 (Book I: Red Rising)

Tactus has owned his sexuality since his very first appearnace, flirting with Darrow in his introductory scene and trying to sleep with girls another. He openly mentions in the second book sleeping with both male and female Pinks. There’s also hints in a flashback sequence during Morning Star that he and Roque were possibly FWB at The Academy, if not potentially dating. 

Orion xe Aquarii (Lesbian)

Introduced: 2015 (Book II: Golden Son)

While Orion hasn’t had her sexuality mentioned on-page yet, she’s married by the start of Iron Gold according to Pierce, and we’re supposed to meet her wife at some point in the new trilogy. And she has some dialogue in Golden Son that, depending how you choose to interpret it, implies she’s a trans woman who transitioned earlier in life. 

Trigg ti Nakamura (Gay)

Introduced: 2016 (Book III: Morning Star)

I can’t even really talk about Trigg without tearing up… For his brief role in the series, Trigg was a fun character to have around, and for fanfic tagging purposes, I propose Gay Grays as the ship name for Trigg and Ephriam. 

Regulus ag Sun a.k.a. Quicksilver (Gay)

Introduced: 2016 (Book III: Morning Star)

He and Matteo are married. 

Ephriam ti Horn (Gay)

Introduced: 2018 (Book IV: Iron Gold)

Ephriam was mentioned in Morning Star as Trigg’s fiance, and in the Iron Gold trilogy he gets elevated to being one of the main characters.

I can’t sleep, just like that night. I stayed up, watching you sleep wondering what was on your mind. Wondering when the universe pictured us meeting, if our starts aligned. Wondering if there would be a last time for us to lay down just as we did that night. Time went by so flawlessly, so fast, I stared at you until my eyes grew weary and even then I couldn’t sleep. I wondered if deep inside you really wanted me to be there or if it was just so obvious that I was full of pain and ached for love, so you pitied me. In reality, I wasn’t full of anything. Well at least now I’m sure I’m not. Empty, vacant, unoccupied—Abandoned. Such a reoccurring theme in my life. Whatever. Somehow I fell asleep as soon as the light began to crawl. When everyone’s asleep, I’m awake playing with the lost and disregarded thoughts thrown into the unwanted pile of this world. They belong to me, they dance over my head until my soul surrenders and my body responds, then I sleep. Finally. All of a sudden I am awaken by the soft meet of your skin to mine. I felt your fingers gracing across the surface of my hip and slowly moving down to my leg. It was a wonderful awakening, my heart began to race, my lips quivered and I turned over to see that you were still sleep. I didn’t know whether to smile or to be disappointed. Were you dreaming of me? Am I on your unconscious mind? Or are you imagining the comfort of someone else? I could never know. I turned back over. I remember wishing you felt what I felt. Intensity. Every moment with you, I cherished and I feared. Even watching you sleep terrified me because it was like being on time out as a kid when all you really want is to play outside. Well, when you woke up, you took another piece of my away. Your hands wrapped around my body, your lips slither all over my skin, you travel to places inside of me unknown by the rest of the world and I cry aloud “I love you.” I wish I would’ve said more. I wish all the words I know went to use, I wish I found the right ones to say. But that probably still wouldn’t have stopped you from leaving. If you were poison then I was ready to die. What a fool.
