Onboard

A ticket must be purchased in most cases before boarding a train. Only the full, non-discounted, unrestricted fare will be available for purchase aboard most Amtrak trains. This is true independent of any prior bookings or pricing offered by ticket agents, Amtrak.com, or elsewhere. When buying tickets on the train, you will normally pay a higher fee. Prior to boarding the train, customers should buy tickets to get the best available cost.

Tickets may be purchased in person at any Amtrak station that is staffed. We accept Amtrak gift cards, credit cards, and debit cards with a credit card logo at most staffed stations.

Payment Methods Accepted at the Station

Credit and debit cards are accepted.

At all staffed stations, credit and debit cards are accepted for the purchase of Amtrak tickets and services. Debit cards that require the insertion of a PIN (personal identifying number) are not accepted and will be handled like credit card transactions. For transactions made with a credit or debit card, there is no minimum amount necessary.

At Amtrak ticket desks, the following regulations regulate the acceptance of credit and debit cards:

Only valid, unexpired cards are accepted by Amtrak ticket agents.

The individual whose name is stamped on the front of the card must also sign it on the reverse. Cards that are not signed will not be accepted. The back of the card must have the same signature as the ticket or charge form.

Credit and debit cards are only accepted for the purchase price; they cannot be used to acquire cash.

When purchasing tickets or services with a credit or debit card, the Amtrak regulations regarding identification requirements apply in all situations.

At the station, Amtrak gift cards may also be redeemed.

Travelers' checks, money orders, personal checks, and cashier's checks are all acceptable forms of payment.

Travelers' checks and money orders are not accepted by Amtrak. Personal cheques and cashier's checks are only allowed for group travel if the Amtrak Group Desk has made previous arrangements.
