If you are bad at birding by ear, I highly recommend BirdNet! You record any song you hear and an AI determines what species it is. It's basically Shazam for birds! It is really cool and a bunch of ornithologists I work with love it.

Well lucky for you, there’s apps for that! Here’s a bunch of ‘em:

1. Merlin Bird ID

This is the only one I can actually talk a lot about with personal experience. It’s by the Cornell lab of ornithology, a frequent source of mine, and the app I have been using for the past year or so whenever my personal knowledge let me down. Design is simple and user friendly and as an added bonus this app works internationally, as you can download bird-packs for whatever part of the world you’re in.

2. Audubon Field Guide

By the Audubon society, which also happens to be a frequent source of mine. Like the Merlin Bird ID this one is easy and simple to use, but unlike Merlin it only works in North America, which might be a bit of a bummer if you happen to be Eurasian, African, South American or Australian.

3. eBird

eBird isn’t a bird ID app, but I still highly recommend getting it (something I just did). It’s made by the Cornell Lab of ornithology, and has the same colour scheme of Merlin, but instead of helping you identify birds, it allows you to keep track of the birds that you have identified via checklists and more.

4. BirdsEye App

I have no personal experience with this one but it’s received a lot of good reviews and praise (that being said, it does only have 3.6 stars on the google app store so yeah). It’s described as “a unique and powerful tool for birders at any level”.

5. Quizlet

Although Quizlet in no way was designed to be used as a bird ID app, it can be used as such. One can think of Quizlet as digital flashcards and users of this app already have created a bunch of ‘em that may help you learn how to identify birds + you get to add upon what’s already been made.

As an example, here are some that can be used for Europe (I however would advise reversing them, so that you see the image first and have to figure out the name based on that)! 

Waterfowl Grebes & loons Shearwaters, Petrels, Gannets, Albatross, Pelicans, Cormorants, Herons, Storks, and Ibisis Birds of Prey
