Patiently dreaming of summer when my Emily Bronte Rose was in full bloom. There’s nothing like the scent of English roses. We’ve recently moved house and this potted rose has moved safely into my new south facing garden! She’s had a prune already, and I’m crossing everything for bigger and better growth this year after she’s properly dug in to a final growing position. I’m also trying to persuade my partner we need a few more @david_austin_roses to admire...I’ve got my heart set on getting a desdemona. I’ve got so many flower paintings planned for this year, and this rose is definitely among them. I’ve been taking a bit of a break from posting on social media this summer. Trying to focus on enjoying the process of making art and soaking in the beauty of nature without putting pressure on myself to try and grow my following or counting the likes. It’s been very good for me, and I feel like I’ve clarified a lot of thoughts ideas about where I want to go with my art and work. So I’m back sharing the things I have been creating in my absence. Remember this painting? It’s got some exciting news. I took this piece to the framer today to have a custom frame built for it, because it has been shortlisted for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition! They receive over 12,000 entries every year, and 4000 of those are shortlisted for selection in person. So I need to take this painting to the Royal Academy on 1 May and cross all my fingers and toes that it gets selected to be one of the 1000 pieces in the final exhibition. 🤞🤞 I’ve been sitting on this news for a little while and finally thought I’d better share it because it is too exciting not to!

I don’t only do landscapes paintings, sometimes I draw! At the moment I’m in love with sketching the birds I see out in the rolling British countryside around me. Their delicate feathers and different characters are such a joy to me. I can often be found staring out of the window at our little bird table with a big grin on my face. This little bullfinch was such a joy, down to each of his fluffy feathers.

Oops running a day behind - I forgot to upload yesterday’s prompt for #marchmeetthemaker ‘Dream Collaboration’. I have a lot of ideas about this. 🙌 . 1. I would love to do some illustrated books in the future - I have dreams of writing and illustrating my own, or another writer’s stories. . 2. I would love to do some work on pottery, again either making some pieces myself of seeing my designs reproduced on ceramics, as I would enjoy the challenge of having to think of my work 3 dimensionally. Similarly I’d really enjoy working with an interior designer. . 3. I would love to work with galleries and other British artists on an exhibition exploring a particular theme, and I dream of collaborating with a musician so we can produce music and paintings that complement one another to evoke different emotions and thoughts. I saw this done at the national gallery in London and have always thought it was such an effective immersive experience. 🎨 So, a lot of thoughts in addition to my current projects ... Day 17 of #marchmeetthemaker, ‘what I’m working on.’ This is my current canvas project, which I’ve already shown a few times. Eventually this will be a murmuration of starlings flying against the setting sun and reflected on the water. But I’ve got several layers and several hours of worried painting to go until I get close to that finished scene!

Day 16 of #marchmeetthemaker ‘workspace (tidy/mess)’. As you can see my workspace is definitely a mess! But I love it all the same. This is my desk, where I sit and look out at the birds in the garden while I paint or write. It’s in a bright conservatory, with my easel and a chest of drawers tucked in on one side, and my partner uses the other side to do maintenance on his bikes. The cat’s food bowls are by my feet as I work, and our muddy boots are off to one side. My desk is always home to a palette of paint and some abandoned brushes, along with my most recent piece in progress. I always work with a cup of tea while listening to an audiobook while painting, or sat quietly listening to the birdsong while I write. Ps. If anyone has any good audiobook suggestions I’d love to hear them! I’m looking for something new to listen to, if you have a good book to recommend?

Day 15 of #marchmeetthemaker is motivation/goals. I dream of having my artwork in people’s homes, as it is so special knowing someone has loved something I made enough to hang it where they can see it everyday. This is such a motivating and nourishing dream for me, along with the dream of writing books that become someone’s favourite read, like an old friend. I want nothing more than for writing and painting to be my day job, everyday. What are your motivations and goals?
