Final Reflection
Key decisions
Font used
I chose the font ‘Gill Sans.’ I just really loved the look of this font family. One thing that really caught my eye was the lowercase p. I just fell in love with the way it looked and knew then that was the font I wanted to use.
Imagery
Majority of the imagery in my magazine was the given images from other peoples interview spreads. I chose to make everything grid aligned and in boxes to make it very neat . I just really like the tidy look of everything and the neatness linked the spreads together in a way. In my magazine I did use lots of line designs. I had previously explained this in a post but will include it here. “Each coloured line represents the journey and memories of the people who were interviewed. I wanted to show how memories travel along with us and how our memories can align. Each person interviewed a relative so some of the memories held by their relatives are also held by them. This is represented through the lines connecting and running along next to each other.”
Title
I chose to make my title ‘Relative memories.’ Each interview in this magazine talks about the memories held by students relative, each student interviewed a relative
What I learned/would do differently
Through doing this assignment I have gained a stronger understanding of indesign and what all the different tools are. I also now love to use paragraph styles which I used to avoid before. I have become much more confident with making layouts and finding grid systems too.
I’m not completely happy with how my cover has turned out. I do like it but I feel there may be too much going on. There are a lot of colours and images in it and not very much negative space. If I were to do this again I would want to take a more simplistic and ‘clean’ approach and really make use of the negative space more so that it doesn’t feel too busy or packed with visual elements. I think I could also even just narrow down the colour palette to make it more simple. I also made a mistake in my final print where all of the page numbers in the contents spread were wrong. I didn’t realise this until after I had handed it in. In future I would proof read my work much more and get other people to check it too to avoid this mistake. I did proof read it myself a couple of times and show some people but I never took the time to actually check all the small details and make sure everything was good so next time I will be more diligent with checking over my work.

Printing/making
I found it quite fun physically putting this magazine together. Although it did take me a while to figure out how to print it, once I had sorted that out stapling it and cutting the edges wasn’t to difficult to do. Unfortunately I realised after handing it in that I had made a mistake, all the page numbers on the contents page were wrong!! Fortunately I handed it in a day early so I am hoping I can re-print it and hand it in again tomorrow.

This is draft/ test print I did. I had a printing issue where there were white boxes forming around my images where it was supposed to be transparent. Fortunately I have been able to fix this issue now by going into the advanced settings when printing from adobe acrobat and selecting ‘simulate overprinting.’ Aside from that it was relatively easy to print and put this magazine together and I am happy with how it turned out.

Line design
A feature of my magazine is my frequently used line designs. These do have more meaning to them other than just looking aesthetic. Each coloured line represents the journey and memories of the people who were interviewed. I wanted to show how memories travel along with us and how our memories can align. Each person interviewed a relative so some of the memories held by their relatives are also held by them. This is represented through the lines connecting and running along next to each other.

These are my final interview spread designs. The only change I made from the original ones were adding my line designs in the background. I made them the main colour of the interview they were in. This helps to carry the line theme throughout the magazine.

These are all of my interview spreads that I have altered to fit a grid system. I wanted everything to have a sense of order to it. I did this by making all the text fit into three columns and all the imagery had sharp, straight boarders. The only thing I wanted to change was to add something to link them to the style of the cover and other spreads.

These are the three interviews I was given for my magazine. I hadn’t made any changes to them yet but I had ideas of what I wanted to do to make them work better together.

This is my new and final design for the thematic intro spread. I really like how simple it is yet because of the lines it doesn’t feel too empty.

I wasn’t sure what to do for my thematic intro so I just continued my line design. But I did recieve some suggestions of what I could include in this spread shown in the photo next to this spread. (to see full image you’ll have to click on it)

This is my new/final design fo the editorial spread with all the extra information. I am really happy with how it looks and has a similar look to the contents and editorial spread tying them together nicely.

This was my first design for my editorial spread, we were then given more information to include in this spread so I will move the lines around slightly to make room for more information. Overall, I am happy with how this spread looks.

I made all the changes I wanted to from my previous design and also realised the contents numbers were all wrong so I fixed that problem too. I am much happier with how the spread is looking now and how the lines have changed. This is my final design for this spread.

This was my second design for a contents and editorial spread. I really like how it turned out and the use of colourful lines. I got some feedback on it which was helpful. It was suggested I make the numbers the main colour of their interview and make them italic to match the italic page numbers. It was also suggested to make the headings much smaller as they didn’t really need to stand out that much. I also wanted to change the lines a bit as well.

This was a very quick design I made for the contents and editorial spread. I really didn’t like how it looked but I did like the idea of having large numbers for the contents page.

Editorial
POP presents ‘Relative Memories’ its second issue since the 2020 launch in May. This 24 page issue is packed with interviews resurfacing relative’s memories from the past. It focuses on the topics of people, objects and places and the value that each of these hold.
The main purpose of the POP magazine is to dig deeper into people’s lives and the stories they have to share. Each person’s life is entirely unique and filled with valuable lessons and precious memories.
The first interview in this issue is, “Catching Up With Lynda,” where a daughter interviews her mother. Next up, a granddaughter interviews her grandmother in “There’s No Place Like Home.” The third interview, “Zambia,” is also an interview between a daughter and her mother. The last interview, “Derech Eretz Ha Mir Dafem” is held between a daughter and her father.

I given a couple of suggestions to changes that I could make. One was to align the subheading with the bottom of the P’s from POP rather than centre aligning it. I tested it out and really like how it looked. Another suggestion I was given to put them images of people in photoshop and make them the colour of their interview spreads main colour. I also really like how that looked so I chose to use that idea. This is my final cover design for the magazine.
