Soon You’ll Get Better hit me real close to home, so I needed to share this. I hope @callmejoey doesn’t hate me for sharing what’s really her story, not mine

Dear Taylor,

I know the chances of you seeing this are slim, but I wanted to write this anyway. This is not just my story, but my best friend’s story. Ten years ago, my best friend got sick, really sick. I remember sitting in a hospital room on Halloween, in my princess dress, Fearless playing from the speaker I had my iPod plugged into in her hospital room. She had lost a lot of weight, but her smile was the same. She was a mystery case. She received painful, invasive and lengthy medical procedures daily, your music in her ears kept her going.

She was finally diagnosed with Thyroid Cancer, “the good kind” they told her, but “the good kind” of cancer caused her to acquire a disease so rare that it took several teams of doctors 6 months to diagnose it. And although the cancer is gone, she lives with the after effects of that disease every single day.

Through every checkup, procedure and surgery, you have been there for her, which I was thankful for because I wasn’t always able to be. She tells me over and over that the greatest days of her life were 6/6/15 and 8/7/18-the days we saw the 1989 tour and Rep tours together. I remember after 1989 she was so enamored, that she couldn’t even talk, she cried from the moment she saw you.

Taylor, it is not an exaggeration to say you saved her life, and mine in turn, because I don’t know how I could live without my best friend. I hope this era is the era she gets to meet you. I hope you can accept her-wheelchair and all. She and I both love you so much. I pray you can notice us. 💕

reputation was released an entire month before I lost the most important person in my life, and for an entire month that I should have been joyful over the birth of a new era, I instead watched my grandmother slowly worsen until she passed on December 10th. That was the beginning of what would become the hardest year of my life.

From the moment she left my life, I started to see just how fair weathered so many of the people around me were. I watched as two of my best friends and roommates at the time abandoned me right as I finished dealing with that in favor of each other. They went from being people I felt like I could rely on to strangers who told malicious lies about me. My boyfriend at the time ended up cheating on me while this happened. I ended up seeing just how few people in my life were actually willing to stand by me and be a friend, no matter how good I had been to them. It started to feel like I couldn’t do anything right.

I even ended up meeting someone who I thought was the one for me. I thought I would spend my life with him. Instead, he used me while he had a boyfriend in the next state over. I was shattered when I found out the truth, and I started to wonder if there was something wrong with me or if I had done something to deserve this.

But the one bright spot I had on this entire portion of my life was reputation. From four rows away, I finally got to see my idol and it was life changing. I felt empowered, watching this amazing woman reclaiming her narrative and showing the world that no matter what people will say about you or how they mistreat you, what you do moving forward is what matters. I walked away with my spirits higher than they had been in over a year.

So @taylorswift, thank you. Ever since then, I’ve been determined to move on and keep my head up no matter what’s to come. Thank you for letting me love myself again. I owe you the world. I cannot wait to see what the next era brings. <3
