open: to all!
Once she had finally accepted that sleep would not come to her easy that night, that she should just act on the thing she was certain of at this point, Amelia pulled on some jeans, tied on her boots, remembered her grimoire and her messenger bag, and escaped the asphyxiation of loneliness.
She could go back to the precinct of course, but she’d promised her team she would try to at least get some sleep.
There was a line for the darts at the bar so she picked out a table in the back, a little secluded and to herself. Idle hands didn’t suit her well. Idle hands and Amelia were how things were invented ( how things got set on fire. ) The coasters caught her attention, and Amelia leaned over to grab a stack of them, pulling a pen from her bag as she did so. She considered the rune she’d been focusing on earlier that day and her pen instinctually drew it on the coaster. She drew it over and over in the way teenage girls supposedly drew the name of their crushes in their diaries, all sweet and hopeful. Poor descriptors for the woman she was now.
This was an easy enough magical experiment on her part. She wanted to teleport her whiskey to the other side of the room. She wondered if she could make it happen with just a bit of magic; a scribbled rune placed here and a scribbled rune placed there - make it a pathway, right? Try and create some sort of loop so that her drink traveled back and forth, continuously. Could be entertaining, yeah? Her own magic had been wonky as of late, but she tried not to worry about that too much.
The shadow that fell across her handiwork caused the witch to look up. Again, technically she was off duty, but her badge still sat on her hip. She raised an eyebrow at the sight, a clear ‘Can I help you?’

&&. —(amelia caitlin hawthorne)? yes, (she) does look a lot like (stella maeve), but (she) is just a (thirty) year old (witch) and last i heard, they were (the sheriff) . around east end, people say (she) is known to be quite (-self-destructive), but can also be (+resourceful). maybe that’s why (amelia)’s theme song is (devil like me - rainbow kitten surprise)?
Like this and I’ll slip into your DMs to plot!
BACKGROUND
[tw: child death, death, dark magic in general]
“Put your faith in science, anything else will only lead you astray.” This is not the first thing Amelia hears her father say to her but it is certainly the first thing she attributes to him. Amelia Caitlin Arlen-Hawthorne was born in the midnight hour in Piedmont, California one late October. She was a curious minded child and at a young age she found a passion for science. Though Cassandra was the sole child of the Arlen-Hawthorne household, she knew little about her parents. There seemed to be a certain kind of distance between them. There was her father, stern and scientific. He was a forensic scientist who was overworked and underpaid.  And then there was her mother, kind and esoteric, whom Amelia only knew from the side of a bed. Cassandra passed away when Amelia was 10, leaving the majority of her life a secret. This included her status as a witch.
Amelia’s magic started showing itself soon after her mother’s death. The sadness she felt manifested itself through her powers and Amelia, completely unknowing of just what she was, was terrified. She kept her magic to herself, convinced she was going crazy.
It was chance that about a year or so after her stumbling onto her magic, the Lux Coven, especially the Hawthorne family, came knocking.  Brennan Hawthorne, Cassandra’s brother, showed up on the Arlen-Hawthorne doorstep in Piedmont, California. Brennan had his sister’s kindness but he and Cassandra differed in that he did not share her distaste for light magic; the very distaste that had led her to dissociate from the coven years ago. Brennan wanted to teach Amelia about their family’s legacy, to show her what she was capable of - show her that she was capable of great good. In Brennan, Amelia finally saw an opportunity to gain some answers about her mother and herself. Intent to keep family close, Brennan offered Amelia the option to come spend every school with the coven.
That’s exactly what happened. Every year till she was 21, Amelia stayed with the Hawthorne side of the family. Every year she fell more in love with magic and less in love with science. It didn’t matter if it was light magic, Amelia felt a sense of community with the Hawthorne’s, something that was a first time for the only child.  When she finally graduated with an undergraduate degree in biochemistry like her father, she had no intention of actually using the degree. Amelia bid her father farewell and moved to East End to become a part of the Hawthorne coven.
Amelia grew close to the Leroy family during this time. She dated the oldest, Jameson, through high school.
When Jameson left for Oregon at 18, Amelia stayed in East End for college. She double majored in Biochem and criminology.
It was at some point, during her undergraduate studies that she found herself dating Jameson’s younger brother, Bennett. The two fell in love and soon got married. He was dedicated to the Church. She found a way to live with that.
Tragedy struck when their first set of twins was still born. A wedge formed between the two.
The Hawthornes were part of the Coven of Amaranthus and were naturally attuned to light magic. But East End has its dark corners. Amelia took up magic with her childhood Jameson that was looking for an apprentice. The young witch took up an apprenticeship without telling any of her family or coven.
Amelia’s hopes and dreams blinded her to the reality of the situation. She hoped to be a strong witch, one that could catch up to the rest of the coven. She felt behind, having grown up California - away from all this. She dreamed of Jameson and saw the two of them building something new and stronger together. For a few glorious years, Amelia felt seen.
It was only her hopes and dreams. Jameson had something darker planned.
Jameson needed Amelia’s bones, see? All 206 of them for this little spell he wanted to try. A thing he’d finally been sitting on and developing for years. When he told her about this spell, he failed to mention how she’d be part of it. It was probably her survival instinct that saved her by the skin of her teeth in the end. They gathered the ingredients and began the steps. Amelia’s felt the dark magic sweep through her, rattle her bones, maybe even realign a few, and somehow she knew that danger was heading towards her like a freight train.
She escaped, after a fight of course. She managed to get away with her life, a wounded heart, a cursed body and… Jameson’s grimoire.
The young witch ran. Home was her first inclination. But when she arrived, she found she didn’t have it in herself to tell her uncle or her Coven about her own stupidity. She deserved what had happened to her. This was obviously the price of something else replacing her Coven in her mind’s eye. It was betrayal, wasn’t it? It weighed down on her like a great shame. Amelia felt so stupid for trusting, for loving. She slunk back to her coven tail between her legs.
But something felt wrong. While Amelia and Jameson hadn’t completed the spell (whatever it was supposed to do), something had nestled within her nonetheless. She flipped through the stolen grimoire searching for answers and found none.
Amelia has been in East End for a while now. Sure she’s a witch, but that’s not exactly a full time occupation that puts money on the table is it? For as long as they’ve been in East End, the Hawthorne’s have been protectors of the land. She started off as a detective and has worked her way up. She is now Sheriff. It’s an occupation her father would have been proud of.
ABOUT (TL;DR)
Her mother, Cassandra, was part of the Coven of Amaranthus in East End, the oldest coven in town, but Cassandra grew up in California away from it
When her mother passed away, Amelia was whisked away to East End to join her mother’s coven and was brought to live with the Hawthorne side of the family.
Amelia felt out of place in the new town, but felt at home with the Leroys. Dated Jameson through high school. Broke up when he moved to Oregon.
Went to college. Met Jameson’s younger brother, Bennett there. They dated. They got married.
Their first set of twins was still born. Amelia and Bennett grew apart.
Amelia turned more towards dark magic.
Jameson, now back in town, took Amelia under his wing as his apprentice. They struck up an affair.
Jameson had sinister plans. The witch wanted to use her for dark magic, Amelia barely escaped - and something most definitely went wrong. She’s trying to figure out what’s wrong with her. All she has is the grimoire of the dark witch she escaped from
She’s trying to do justice to the Hawthorne name. Is now Sheriff of East End. It’s her whole life.
She avoids talking about her stray from the light at all costs
PERSONALITY / OTHER
Goes by her middle name amongst close friends.
Amelia loves to read. While she has a strong taste for the classics, her heart still beats for all things scientific and analytical. Her degree was in biochemistry and a copy of the Scientific American can stop in her tracks.
She has an undeniable passion for the outdoors with little tolerance for an urban sprawl. Amelia makes an effort to go camping at least once a month. When not dressed for work (where she likes to make it appear that she has at least some semblance of control) she is wearing boots and flannel.
She is a heavy smoker; a bad habit she picked up since moving to East End. Amelia rolls her own cigarettes. She enjoys the method associated with the gesture and it allows her to be picky with the tobacco she uses. It’s calming and she appreciates the deep irony of assembling something that is slowly killing her.
Amelia has taken on a lone-wolf personality. She has few friends if any, and so most of her time is spent investing in the relationships she has with her clients. Even though she wants community more than anything, Amelia is purposely keeping herself at a distance from other people. If there was one phrase guiding her life at the moment it would be: “Trust no one” - for sake of her safety and theirs.
She is an inventor at heart, always trying a new potion or inventing a new spell.

&&. —(jasper o’hara)? yes, (he) does look a lot like (ben barnes), but (he) is/are just a (thirty-five) year old (dragon) and last i heard, they were (a supernatural gang leader) . around east end, people say (he) is known to be quite (-reckless), but can also be (+brave). maybe that’s why (jasper)’s theme song is (seven nation army - white stripes)?
give this a like and i’ll slip into your DMs to plot!
[ tw: casual murder, death, violence ]
BACKGROUND
The O’Hara’s are an ancient line of dragons that take pride in their lineage. In East End, they’re a mob. Think The Westies but for DRAGONS - called, you guessed it, “The Dragons.” The bar - O’Hara’s - has been around for as long as anyone can remember.
Their main enemy? Hunters. They fucking HATE ‘em. It’s a tale old as time and the bad blood runs deep. Jasper grew up with the fierce belief that Hunters (and most humans too) were only good for one thing - dead meat.
Jasper is the oldest son of Melchior O’Hara, the man that sat the help of the The Dragons and worked at one of East End’s biggest financiers. His mother passed during childbirth and left Jasper and his twin James (Jasper, two minutes older) alone with their father. Jasper was doted upon and loved unconditionally. He was not spoiled, but he had learned to expect a certain comfort in life.
At age 13, Jasper and James were shipped off to England - Melchior told them it was so that he could go to boarding school to finish his education. For good of the The Dragons.
Jasper hated this. His teen years were filled with maximum rage and maximum angst. He wanted to stay in East End with the Dragons - why the fuck was he in England?
Jasper attended Eton, despite his rambunctious protests (which included running away quite a few times.) He barely passed through most of school, spending more time in the principal’s office than class.
In college, he discovered he had quite a head for business—at least the negotiation side of things. His natural charm and intellect impressed most of his professors—even if his testing results lacked a reflection of this.
Earning his masters felt—for a fleeting moment—like he’d done something right. Jasper returned, his father drew him aside, congratulated him and welcomed him to the Dragons.
It was literally the moment that he’d been waiting his whole life for. Jasper stepped into his father’s shadow with the intention of taking over the Dragons and all their illicit dealings
For a while, life was GOOD. He knew where his loyalties lay, he’d made some good cash, he’d taken out a few hunters. He’d even fallen for a cute secretary at his father’s firm too.
She was really cute.
Like, really cute.
They got married. Life? BLISS.
So of course, it wasn’t meant to be.
Life took a tragic turn one night. That cute secretary? Undercover hunter. Jasper? Saw red.
He struck before she could hurt him and his gang. He went to his brother, asked James to help him get rid of the body. He never told his father.
For three years, Jasper didn’t think twice about it. It was the way of the world. Dragons killed hunters. End of story.
Life went on. More fights at the Den, more money being raked in, a new love of his life (this one, to stay.) Jasper found himself engaged once more to one Selena Leon.
Hunter grudges, evidently, die hard. The family of his first wife retaliated and, though it took them three years, it was a hit and a run. All Jasper remembers is the gunfire, catching some of the crossfire… his father, catching a bullet meant for him. Then, waking up in a hospital bed. His dad, dead. The killers clear. Jasper blamed himself.
He stayed for the funeral. The day after, he left a note for the rest of his family and The Dragons: “Gone, but not far. Please don’t look for me. Will check in soon.”
He took his money and a single bag and fled on the first international flight - no plan, no hesitance. He traveled two years, wandering from country to country, living in hotel rooms, making friends everywhere he went. His shadow of their guilt followed him. Whenever people began to ask questions, he ran.
Eventually, his demons caught up with him. Two years later, his fiancee, Selena Leon, found him drinking his way through some bar in Paris. She’d been running The Dragons along with his brother for the last two years and she was there to drag him back. ‘They listen to you.’ She told him.
Jasper returned to East End.
Jasper’s been back for two months and he finds old muscle memory kicking in. He himself rather attuned to the cruel nature necessary for such a vocation and is finding that when he can push away the guilt of his father’s death - he fucking loves this life.
ABOUT (TL;DR)
Comes from a mob family of Dragons, grew up in it. His father practically ran it and he was next in line to do so.
Young. New dragon. New gang leader. Was BORN to do this shit and, after the initial hesitance of his youth, fills the shoes with ease.
Went to school in England, came back essentially to run The Dragons. Earned a bit of a rep for himself - a little too wild, a little to reckless.
Came back, started to learn the way of The Dragons (haha).
Fell in love, got married.... and then learned she was a hunter. KILLED HER.
Her family hunted him and for three years, he got away with it. But, tragedy struck and his father wound up dying taking a bullet that was meant for him. Jasper packed his shit up and left the country without really telling anyone out of pure guilt.
Two years later, Jasper was dragged back by his current fiancee, former high school sweetheart - Selena Leon.
He is back to being the leader of the Dragons and THRIVING - when he isn’t consumed by guilt over his father’s death.
He runs the Dragons and The Den. You can learn more about the O’Hara bar, the smuggling industry of East End and the fighting pit here.
PERSONALITY / OTHER
Jasper is WRACKED with guilt over his father’s death and is hoping most people have forgotten about it.
grew up learning every aspect of the gang
A real piece of shit
A piece of shit that protects his own.
Has a hell of a temper.
LOVES being a dragon.
as stated above, has a good head for business due to natural charm and charisma

loves being active, hates being bored. big on team sports and camping

THE O’HARA DRAGONS
For those in the know, the O’Hara family is one of the key players in the burgeoning black market industry in East End. Not only are they in charge of ‘The Den,’ the supernatural fighting ring present in town, but they’ve earned a fair bit of gold smuggling and stealing things for whomever is willing to pay the right price. One does not need to be family to become a part of the Dragons, but one is expected to provide a certain level of loyalty. The Dragons would take an arrow for you, you better be ready to do the same. Dragons accept any individual, from any species (except human), that is willing to make a little money and doesn’t mind looking the other way when it comes to ‘following the rules.’ The more skilled you are in your profession the bigger the deal that gets cut for you.
LOCATIONS
O’Hara’s is a supernatural-leaning bar in East End that’s been owned by the O’Hara family for as long as anyone can remember. Humans tend to stay away. Low-lights and dive bar aesthetic, this is a trusty place to unwind after a long day of work. The specific drinks on tap are known to cater to just about every species. Their whiskey isn’t half bad either.
Crawl under O’Hara’s bar and you will find ‘The Den,’ an underground fighting pit where you can find just about any supernatural creature ready to duke it out with another. The O’Hara brothers run the books for this pit and you’re more than welcome to throw down a wager or try a round in the ring. Fight club rules apply with the added caveat of “no humans allowed.” The last one who tried slithering their way in got their throat torn out by a dragon…
At the far end of the Den is a cluster of closed doors. If you’re one of the lucky ones to open them, you’re more than likely to find yourself in the company of said dragons. Trying to get your hands on something a little shady? These guys will help you get your claws on it - for the right price. No request is too perverse, you know how dragons love their gold.
