What is ESD Protected Area or EPA
ESD Protected Area is defined area that has been established to control Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) and to avoid all problems resulting from ESD damage. EPA is a defined space in which all surfaces, objects, people and static sensitive devices are kept at same electrical potential, which is achieved by having only groundable materials (materials with electrical resistance between 10¹ to 10⁹ Ohms). All surfaces, tools, people should be grounded through a resistance of between 1 and 10 megohms. Anything which does not dissipate charge should be excluded from ESD Protected Areas.

ESD Aprons:

ESD Wrist Straps/Wrist Bands:
               In an ESD Protected Area (EPA) all surfaces, objects, people and ESD Sensitive Devices(ESD’s) are maintained at the same potential. Wrist Straps are the most common personnel grounding device and are used to link human beings to ground. Wrist Straps are made up of two components and in two parts, a band which is worn comfortably around wrist and coil cord which connects the band to an Earth Bonding Point (EBP).
As per the guidelines and standards, 1 megohm resistor should be incorporated with ESD Wrist Straps/Wrist Bands. A 1 megohm resistor allows any static charge to discharge completely over time, typically less than 01 second. Without the 1 megohm resistor, the static discharge would be an instantaneous drain directly to ground, which may lead to failure of components on electronics-assemblies.There are two types of wrist straps will be available: elastic & metal wrist straps, both are adjustable.

 Installation and grounding of ESD / Anti-Static Aprons:
Follow the directions below for proper installation and grounding of the ESD / Anti-Static Aprons:
Put on the ESD / Anti-Static Apron and fasten all of the snaps on the front of the lab coat, making sure that clothing is not exposed outside of the apron.
Throughout use, it is essential that the conductive cuff is in intimate contact with the wrist skin. The conductive cuff should never be allowed to be pulled up and over the shirt sleeve.
Ground the ESD / Anti-Static Apron. A popular way to ground an ESD / Anti-Static Apron is with a coiled cord either attached to a snap on the waist area of the apron via a wrist strap snapped to the inside cuff of an ESD / Anti-Static Apron. If none of these methods are suitable, the lab coat should be grounded via the person’s wrist removing charges via ESD footwear to ESD protected flooring.
ESD /Anti-Static Aprons are a conductor and therefore should be grounded. If not grounded, the ESD garment can be a potentially threatening isolated charged conductor. If an operator is wearing an ESD / Anti-Static Apron but is not electrically connecting the apron to either their body’s skin or ground, then charges on the aprons may have nowhere to go or discharge to.
Testing of ESD / Anti-Static Aprons Panel-to-panel conductivity is essential to ensure portions of the aprons are not left as isolated charged conductors. A Resistance Test Kit can quickly measure resistance of the fabric and ensure panel-to-panel conductivity by placing five pound electrodes on different fabric panels.
