For years I asked, pleaded for a chance to own my work. Instead I was given an opportunity to sign back up to Big Machine Records and ‘earn’ one album back at a time, one for every new one I turned in. I walked away because I knew once I signed that contract, Scott Borchetta would sell the label, thereby selling me and my future. I had to make the excruciating choice to leave behind my past. Music I wrote on my bedroom floor and videos I dreamed up and paid for from the money I earned playing in bars, then clubs, then arenas, then stadiums. 

Some fun facts about today’s news: I learned about Scooter Braun’s purchase of my masters as it was announced to the world. All I could think about was the incessant, manipulative bullying I’ve received at his hands for years. 

Like when Kim Kardashian orchestrated an illegally recorded snippet of a phone call to be leaked and then Scooter got his two clients together to bully me online about it. (See photo) Or when his client, Kanye West, organized a revenge porn music video which strips my body naked. Now Scooter has stripped me of my life’s work, that I wasn’t given an opportunity to buy. Essentially, my musical legacy is about to lie in the hands of someone who tried to dismantle it.

This is my worst case scenario. This is what happens when you sign a deal at fifteen to someone for whom the term ‘loyalty’ is clearly just a contractual concept. And when that man says ‘Music has value’, he means its value is beholden to men who had no part in creating it. 

When I left my masters in Scott’s hands, I made peace with the fact that eventually he would sell them. Never in my worst nightmares did I imagine the buyer would be Scooter. Any time Scott Borchetta has heard the words ‘Scooter Braun’ escape my lips, it was when I was either crying or trying not to. He knew what he was doing; they both did. Controlling a woman who didn’t want to be associated with them. In perpetuity. That means forever. 

Thankfully, I am now signed to a label that believes I should own anything I create. Thankfully, I left my past in Scott’s hands and not my future. And hopefully, young artists or kids with musical dreams will read this and learn about how to better protect themselves in a negotiation. You deserve to own the art you make.

I will always be proud of my past work. But for a healthier option, Lover will be out August 23.

I used to teach kids, University students and working adults in Croatia conversational English (I’m Canadian, so a native speaker) when I was living on my own in the city of Zagreb and I’d have all levels of speakers. They were always scared at first, thinking I’d judge them, so I would tell them about how I lived in Paris and was terrified to speak French with the locals because I thought they’d make fun of me. I told them I still regret not getting over my fear because I never learned to speak French. I also said that I will never judge them, that we teachers never expect them to be a higher level than they are in a foreign language and that our goal is to help them learn.

My students were very open to learning and quickly got over their fears of speaking in front of me. I wouldn’t correct them until they were completely done with their stories, because I didn’t want to interrupt their flow. They grew very comfortable in speaking English in front of others in the group. They often surprised me with their fluency and exceeded my expectations.

If you’re learning a foreign language, I recommend conversational groups or individual sessions with a native speaker. Make sure they’re like me: open and encouraging, otherwise walk away because you deserve the best teachers to help you thrive.

So I used to have a Russian friend who had a pretty thick accent and like a lot of Russians tended to eschew articles. She would say things like “Get in car.” And stuff.

Well one day this asshole who had been kind of tagging along with us asks her why she talks like that because it makes her sound dumb and I still remember her response word for word.

“Me? Dumb? Maybe in America you have to say get in THE car because you are so stupid that people might just get in random car, but in Russia we don’t need to say that. We just fucking know because we are not stupid.”

This is so unfair. I love your accounts. You’re so respectful and kind, and I know a lot about community guidelines and I don’t understand how you could all of a sudden possibly be in violation of any.

Today has been nothing less of a horrible day. About 4 hours ago I try to log into my account @taylorswift_updates, and it logs me out and quickly informs me by account has been disabled as a result of not following community guidelines and rules. I have NO idea what I did wrong and there is no email/phone number to contact Instagram or any sort of Instagram support. Just an hour ago the SAME thing happened to my friend @1989styleswift (@taylorswift.updates on Instagram) and we’ve been trying to figure out a way to contact Instagram and have had no luck. If you can help us, PLEASE message us. We’ve worked very hard on our accounts and to have them shut down without warning or reason is very frustrating and upsetting. Please spread this around. Thank you. @taylorswift

you've probably answered this already but what is she physically like in person? i think i wouldn't be able to stop staring at her eyes, they are probably even bluer in real life

she is very long and lanky. she’s super thin and really petite. her eyes are aggressively blue, she’s really really engaging and very touchy - she stands close to you and grabs at your hands a lot. i’ve never met someone so attentive when you speak to her. she refuses to break eye contact. when she laughs she laughs with her whole body which is really genuine and something that a lot of people don’t do.

she makes you feel important and special and like you are the only person in the room even when there are 4-5 others there. she refuses to let anything interrupt the conversation - on monday, they asked her four times to pose for the picture and she kept going because we were chatting about something. she responds quickly and never makes you feel rude or uncomfortable, and compensates if she does by accident — also on monday, she was talking to ashley and accidentally turned her back on me and then when i moved around she immediately grabbed my hand and squeezed it because she felt bad.

My girls and will be having a listening party together and intend on cancelling all plans when they arrive, drop everything and drive to one of our homes. Priorities, am I right?

These stories are terrifying and heartbreaking.

Once my friend Henry was accused of wearing wireless headphones by a substitute so she said for him to hand them over so he took them off and handed them to her. Then later on she asked him a question and he didn’t respond so she said it louder and he still didn’t respond. She asked why he was not responding and he said “I can’t understand you ma'am, you took my hearing aids.”
