Rewatched The Good Place for the first time since s4 dropped and. Oh my god. The Good Place said "people are a result of their environment but we always have a moral responsibility to be better" and The Good Place said "every day the world gets a little more complicated and it gets a little harder to be good" and The Good Place said "even in the face of total nihilism, when nothing you do will matter, you still have to at least try. Because trying is better than the alternative" and The Good Place said "if you have bills to pay and shit to deal with you don't have time or energy to become a better person" and then The Good Place really said "people get better when they get external love and support. merrily we roll along just wouldn't work as well told in order. because yeah, it'd be sad to see mary go from a teetotaler to an alcoholic, but it's sadder to only know her as a drunk then suddenly see her younger self refuse a glass of champagne because she doesn't drink. it'd be sad to watch frank throw away what he could have had with mary, but it's sadder to see him go through woman after woman and then hear him say "i've just met the girl i ought to marry." there's something so much more poignant and tragic about learning what it was they lost after they've already lost it. meeting them at their worst and realizing they weren't always that way. that they didn't have to be that way.

shouto, who has been called beautiful, powerful, and strong, but never kind. who is often associated with his father's strength by other characters, but never with the gentleness of the love he felt for his mother. the one who was raised as a weapon against all might's success by his father. and izuku dares to look him in the eyes and call him kind, like no one ever had before.

having good & true friends will literally save and protect you in a million unfathomable ways. like okay we have written so many times about lovers. but the way a platonic friend laughs and cries with you. the way they hold your hand at 14 years old and at 34. the way they keep a little silver tie to you, touching base over and over and over. how you can go years without talking, only to re-meet and discover: oh shit! you're still cool!

there are people who have been in my life for more than half of it, and i have loved every version of them. do you know how fucking beautiful that is. yeah love will save the world. but the way friends love you is gonna save the you.
