the bad and ugly
I wanted to redesign the What’s your pay gap interactive infographic because I found it to be too responsive which I thought was something that wouldn't have necessarily been a bad thing. Every slight touch of the mouse causes the dots plotted on the graph to scatter everywhere which makes it really hard to fully understand and analyze the information being shown. In my redesign I cleaned up the structure but would mainly focus on ensuring that you could (1) search more professions, and (2) be able to look at the data without it over-reacting.

...and my redesign

*panting profusely*
I decided to do an online workout with my friend which was fun! It definitely burned something...walking the next day was a bit painful.
4/5 anxiety level
We overall enjoyed the workout, though I rather workout on my own and not in accordance to a video, it was a nice change of pace.
2/5 anxiety level afterwards

Membranes
For my mental stretch quest I decided to pull out the old brain age game on my nintendo DS and test my brain skills.
Anxiety level: 3/5
I played a few games and initially got a score of 76 so that made me feel GREAT but after a few games I got around my age, a few years older. It’s always interested be in how they can recognize the brain’s age in response to a few questions so that was cool to look back on again.

THE DAILY ROUTINES OF FAMOUS CREATIVE PEOPLE
This interactive data visualization was effective in its goal as it presented the data in a clear and concise way without being too overwhelming or confusing to the user. The legend makes for easy understanding in the visualization, along with the timeline along the top breaking down the day in hours. The variety of colours makes it easy to depict what section is what, and a hover element also helps the user distinguish what section is what once you scroll past the legend and can’t see it further down on the page. The information button next to each of the names gives a little insight on who these “famous creative people” are and what they have contributed. Brief and to the point information without it being overwhelming or unclear.
Below is a quick sketch of the infographic with the original at the bottom of the post.

This infographic is simple yet informative of its content, and interactive but not overwhelming or hard to manoeuvre around.

CURIOSITY CONVO
So the other day I was sitting at Phil & Sebastian working on mountains of homework and making lists for days.
Next to me was this guy...not gonna lie, kinda good looking, anyways, not the point. He was....coding...for what looked like...fun.
I was beside myself. Who in their right mind would want to code for fun, it was driving me mental. I decided in that moment, here’s a stretch quest opportunity. Curiosity conversation here I come.
ANXIETY LEVEL AT THIS POINT IN TIME: 4-ish
So I pulled my headphones off, made eye contact and started the conversation.
“Are you coding a website?”
He looks over, smiles, and replies saying that he is coding a theme for a website. Then we start talking, he tells me he has an etsy shop where he sells templates for blogs and websites for people like me who don’t know how to code one bit. It keeps him “calm and sane” apparently. A soothing method to his hectic life he claims.
After a bit of chatting, I mention that I have a website with one of those templates from some random guy in the UK who sold me a template but that I couldn’t figure out a few things. What a classic Canadian, he offers to help!!! Haven’t I just hit the JACKPOT!
What a gem, he helps me with what I’d been trying to do for like two weeks in approximately five seconds...turns out an accidental space in your additional CSS code makes a legit difference...who knew.
He wished me good luck with school and my website and I thanked him profusely.
ANXIETY LEVEL AT THIS POINT: 1
God bless those who code...especially for fun.

THE BETTER MYMRU
Tasked with a redesign of MyMRU, I went in thinking of the things I look for constantly on MyMRU that I wish were easily accessible.
Tumblr media
I would keep the tabs the same as how they are currently separated, however I would have less separation in the rows of information. I have sketched two rather than the three or four that MyMRU currently has. I think this would allow for some breathing room and removal of any unnecessary information that could be elsewhere.
On the homepage of the site I would implement a bookmarks section so that your frequently visited sections of MyMRU were right there without having to search for them through the dozens of section separators that are currently there. I would then make the academic calendar larger and utilize the space a bit better. Furthermore, I would add a help section on the homepage, and if possible, implement a live chat for further assistance.

SOCIAL STRETCH
The other day I was using my Car2Go subscription to head downtown with a friend to work on homework, I reserved a car2go and we drove to it so we didnt have to deal with the monstrosity that is parking downtown.
Then...we arrived at the Car2Go to see it covered in snow and stuck. Reversing back and forth wouldnt work and my friend couldnt push it out while I tried to steer and slam the gas. Reluctantly, I had no other option but to ask for help. As someone who is probably the most socially awkward human, this was extremely nerve-wracking.
ANXIETY LEVEL AT THIS POINT WAS A 4.5/5
Tumblr media
The only person in sight was a man in a Porsche parked ahead of me. I went up, knocked on his window and asked if he could help. God bless his soul he did, not to mention that he slipped while trying to “lift it up.”
Despite being hella nervous about having to step outside my comfort zone, the guy I asked was beyond stereotypical Canadian and was the sweetest. This greatly reduced my anxiety to a solid 2.
Six more weeks of this weather...god bless us all.

ONLINE RESERVATIONS
For this week’s interface sketch, I went through the process of redesigning the reservation task on the Mercato website. I recently saw a friend trying to make a reservation and the process was a complete gong show.
