On this day in music history: February 15, 1986 - “How Will I Know” by Whitney Houston hits #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for 2 weeks, also topping the R&B singles chart for 1 week on March 8, 1986. Written by George Merrill, Shannon Rubicam and Narada Michael Walden, it is the second pop and third R&B chart topper for the Newark, NJ born singer. Arista A&R man Gerry Griffith finds the song through Merrill and Rubicam’s music publisher, and Griffith also taps Walden to produce the single, but initially turns him down as he is busy working with Aretha Franklin at the time. He changes his mind and also contributes additional lyrics to the song. Entering the Hot 100 at #60 on December 7, 1985, it climbs to the top of the chart ten weeks later. “How Will I Know” replaces Dionne & Friends “That’s What Friends Are For” at number one (Houston and Warwick were first cousins), becoming one of the few times in chart history that blood relatives have succeeded each other at the top of the pop chart. In March of 1978, Andy Gibb’s “(Love Is) Thicker Than Water” replaces his brothers the Bee Gees’ single “Stayin’ Alive” at number one, then the Bees bump their younger brother from the top two weeks later with “Night Fever”. “How Will I Know” is certified Gold in the US by the RIAA.
