Dr. Anastasios Koularmanis: His Career As An Educator
Dr. Anastasios Koularmanis was appointed as the Director of Greek education in the year 2019. He was appointed by Archbishop Elpidophoros, as was announced by Reverend Andreas Vithoulkas, the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese’s chancellor. He was previously the Saint Demetrios Greek American Schools superintendent. The school is situated in Astoria, New York.
Dr. Koularmanis’s achievements
Dr. Anastasios Koularmanis has been an educator as well as an able administrator for more than 28 years. He became the principal of Saint Demetrios in the year 2000, o 1st of September. Dr. Koularmanis elevated the standard of Greek education when he became the chief administrator of St. Demetrios Schools. Not only has the Saint Demetrios school has received the accolade of being one of the best Greek American Schools. It has also been recognized as one of the best schools in New York City. The educational institution has also received recognition in Greece as one of the premier educational institutions in a foreign country.
When it was under his supervision, Patriarch Bartholomew and three prime ministers, namely, Tsipras, Mitsotakis and Samaras have visited the school. The school has been visited by any famous politicians, athletes and other prominent personalities. He also managed to get over three million dollars as donations from NYC State Department of Education, DCYD, Dr Apostolos Tambaks and the Niarchos Foundation among many others.
As a leading educator, Dr. Koularmanis revamped the curricula and other programs followed by the St. Demetrios School. This actually ensured that all the students of his school have an excellent educational foundation. Students of this school have found their place in top universities of America, those include, Columbia, Cooper Union, NYU, Yale, to name a few. Statistics show that most of the students who graduated from this school were able to get full scholarships.

Anastasios Koularmanis: A Pioneer In Greek-American School System
Anastasios Koularmanis Demetrios, the superintendent of Saint Demetrios Greek American School in Astoria NY was appointed as the new director of Greek education in 2019. Reverend Protopresbyter Andreas Vithoulkas had announced that the Archbishop Elpidophorus had appointed doctor Anastasios Koularmanis as the new director. This was a big achievement in the life of Dr. Koularmanis who had worked hard for his community and school for more than 2 decades.
Enhancing educational standards
Dr. Koularmanis had worked towards increasing the educational standards of his Greek American school where he worked as the chief administrator for almost 20 years. During his tenure as the administrator, the school had been recognized as one of the best parochial schools all over NYC. The school was even recognized with honors and achievements in Greece which is a very big feat for any Greek American education school system.
There were many visitors to the school during the tenure of Dr. Koularmanis as the chief administrator. There were visitors like the Prime Minister Mitsotaki, Tsipras, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew and Samaras. Some of the visitors were also benefactors who were in the positions as famous athletes, politicians and other honorable dignitaries. These benefactors like the NY State Department of Education, Niarchos Foundation, DYCD, Dr. Apostolos Tambakis and many more alleged support towards a fund that was founded by Dr. Koularmanis. This fund helped the students in achieving their educational and non-educational goals.
His work
Before joining Saint Demetrios School, he had left his stable job in a public school to work in Saint Demetrios School which is a private organization. It was an easy decision for him most of the teachers would hesitate transferring from a public school system to a private school system. However, Dr. Anastasios Koularmanis had stated that he had ample amount of support from his wife and sons, Ioannis and Demetrios Koularmanis to do a greater work for his own community as a Greek American citizen and teacher.
