What I made was a series of lights in three rooms and not only what the light surround, but what surrounds the light. In each image there are strings of lights, from yellow tiny lights to dusty light bulbs transitioning into colorful christmas lights. The rooms that were photographed were the living room, my sister’s bedroom and my bedroom.
The techniques I used were rule of thirds, aperture, balance and depth of field. In a few images there are some blurry and glowing lights that illuminate in the dark exposure of the photo. I used some saturation and balance in the color and the use of an accidental slow shutter speed.
I want these images to make the viewer not only admire the lights but perhaps think of certain events or moments where they have recognized these lights, how they feel about these lights and the objects hidden in the dark etc., Especially with the different rooms and the lights in each room. The living room with the string of lights surrounding the plants and family photos, would that make the viewer think of a time where they were surrounded by their loved ones with holiday music playing? My sister’s bedroom with her light bulbs surrounding her shelves above her bed, do they think of an outdoor restaurant in Philly late at night? Or maybe when they used to be afraid of the dark so they used nightlights or it seems like a comfortable atmosphere to sit in and relax. My bedroom with the colorful Christmas lights, are they thinking of a party they went to? When they were 7 years old too excited to sleep on Christmas eve? Is a song playing in their heads?
I made it this way because I not only wanted to photograph what I personally find aesthetically pleasing and nostalgic but I want these images to capture the thoughts and emotions of someone. I want these images to go beyond looking pretty and make someone feel nostalgic.
