Immigrant Interview : First Person
Nicholas Ighade
19
Nigerian
I came from Nigeria for a number of reasons to America. My aunt and cousin live in Baltimore and influenced me to choose Morgan State as the school I would attend. My cousin had attended and spoke highly of the school so I applied. In order be admitted into the United States I had to take the SAT exam to determine my knowledge criteria. I then filled out schools and after admission applied for a US Student Visa and got approved. Nigeria has good schools but they are not as advanced as American schools nor have the technology. Also, teachers or schools strike frequently so you can’t rely on stable learning environments. That’s the difference with America whereas there won’t be as many strikes and if there is, there is more availability to a different school if need be. Nigeria also does not have as many job opportunities nor are the wages as high so that encouraged my parents to want my siblings and I to come here. Therefore, we were not pushed by conditions ,such as, war, poverty, or famine but rather pulled towards the opportunities we could grasp. Passports, visas, and planes were expensive and cost about 3 million in total for just myself not including my 4 siblings. I’ve had to adapt to American culture while being here. I already learned English since kindergarten ,but, I had to get used to the attitudes of Americans, music, and how they dress. I had to leave my family and friends but still stay in contact through calls, texts, and facetime. There is a lot of pressure on me but I would be considered a entrepreneurial immigrant for my future goals to own my business. The expectations of my family are to get a degree, find a good job, and a wife after college. My parents have it harder than me for how hard they are working in order to pay fees from my and my siblings move to America. They work while I come to school in order to achieve my goals as well as the ones they set for me.

Immigrant Interview
Interview an immigrant of any age, gender, and nationality. Ask to hear his or her immigration story. Listen for the key migration concepts discussed in this chapter: pushes and pulls, bridges and barriers, and immigrant types. Ask about the person’s incorporation experience in the new country. How are gender roles different in the new country? What are the expectations of members of the second generation, and how do their lives differ from those of their immigrant parents. Be sure to take detailed notes and analyze the story, then synthesize it in a short essay using first person.

Fieldwork Assignment
The ingriedents of Twix are sugar, glucose syrup , flour , vegetable fat, milk solids, cocoa butter, cocoa mass, cocoa powder, salt, smulsifier(soy lecithin), raising agent (500), natural flavours (vanilla extract). The Fairtrade Cocoa Program, which was launched in partnership with Mars Chocolate Germany for their TWIX brand in 2014, specifically aims to deliver more opportunities for cocoa farmers to sell on Fairtrade terms and connect them with businesses that actively support efforts to improve farmer livelihoods. It was released in the United States in 1979 and in 1983 the Twix PB (peanut butter) version was introduced. The unit price of twix is 1.00 a bar. Some children in Cote d’Ivoire are forced to work in terrible conditions against their will, picking cocoa beans that make their way into Mars company sweets. A class action lawsuit sought to force Mars company candy bar labels to disclose the fact that child slaves may have picked the cocoa beans that went into these chocolates.

Fieldwork #9
My kinship diagram made me realize my family is very small. I always knew it but to actually dissect it made me feel at unease. Most family I have are family friends or not related by blood so to see how much I had by blood made me want to know if maybe I just don’t know how much family I have. It also made me realize that most of my father’s side was missing not only because he is an only child but as well as my grandmother. This made me realize I’m missing a connection with that side of my family. Also I realized that most of the family I have on my mother’s side are deceased.

Fieldwork Assignment #7
Onejiru moved to Germany from Kenya when she was only 10 years old. When she grew older she also grew a fondness to music as well as geography. However, her fondness of music led to stereotyping of her music style in Germany. As a black woman she was stereotyped when she came on stage to sing soulful R&B. Her race did not have to constrict her to one style of music because she sings in German, English, Kikuyu, and Swahili. This is also an example of diaspora because although she had moved to this new country over the years she still kept ties with her home country. In the future she wants to bring different back grounds of children together. Austen Peter Brant was born in London but grew up in Germany. His Nigerian name is Fagbola Austen Peter. He said he grew up around racism in Germany which is not surprising due to the racial ideology that takes place in Germany. He wants to heal the world but also Germany and build bridges that will connect people. He was led to be an activist and truly wants to help people of color due to their bloodied history not only from colonialism but also so others can share their experiences to grow with each other.

Racial Stereotype. There was a time when Miley Cyrus a fun loving Disney actress had a “phase” of being a stereotypical black woman and was parading herself around barely clothed, twerking everywhere, and had wild boisterous behavior. Let a black woman had done that she would have been called every ghetto and ratchet name.

Bill Cosby had multiple allegations of committing rape towards multiple women and was recently sentenced to 3-10 years behind bars. However, young white Brock Turner esteemed swimmer and college student at his school was only sentenced to 6 months for raping a female that he was proven guilty of. Goes to show that your difference in race can effect your punishment in society today.

The term,” Make America Great Again,” is associated with Donald Trump and his insulting gestures or racists statements he had said in past campaigning for presidency. Kanye West, a well known black rapper who on national television said George Bush doesn’t support black people now correlates with Trump and his ideologies. This depicts that even those who are supposed to be with you will go against their own race.

Racial profiling is the use of race to profile if someone completed a crime or not. In Family Guy instead of a darker male being profiled, Peter , a white man got profiled instead and his vehicle got stopped.
