Sometimes you get stuck in a rut. Sometimes fandom at large gets stuck in one long hard rut. Stop snickering, this is a serious topic. Instead of the new Variant Verses chapter (I worry I'll run out of surprises if I keep sharing snippets of that one every week), here is a snippet from the so-far-untitled Short Nieyao Angst Fic.

“You have a responsibility to your child, not to mention your wife—” “Do you want me to go?” interrupted Jin Guangyao. It was a risk. He didn’t know what he would do if Nie Mingjue told him outright that he wanted him gone and ordered him out of his room. Nie Mingjue’s shoulders sagged. “I always want you here.”

First chapter of Simmer

I was working on the new Variant Verses chapter today... well, I say "working on it" when I mean "rotating the blorbos in my mind while taking a long walk"... and it seems there's going to be more talking than I was originally expecting. Nieyao can't just homerotically spar, they need to hash out everything that's ever gone wrong between them. (This is great for me, since I'm much more confident writing emotional conversations than swordfights. It'll take a lot of pressure off if the sparring isn't the emotional climax of the chapter but part of the lead-up to it.)

But anyway, I was piecing their argument together in my head and Meng Yao made a point that I don't think I've ever seen in fic before, and I've read just about everything AO3 has to offer on the topic of nieyao reconciliation. I can't wait to write this down and properly dig into it. I am rubbing my hands with glee.

From the Variant Verses chapter where nieyao run into each other after ditching the victory banquet.

The man Nie Mingjue had fallen in love with didn’t exist. He’d only ever been an illusion, made up of Jin Yao’s lies and Nie Mingjue’s own imagination. He wasn’t real. But that was still his face looking up at Nie Mingjue in bewildered hurt, and so Nie Mingjue felt compelled to offer an explanation. “I don’t like women,” he said, giving voice to a truth he’d never spoken out loud before. Jin Yao burst out laughing.

Fic Forecast

A new list of fics I may end up writing in future, since the old one was getting unwieldy. (I've ticked off seven out of ten items from the previous forecast! Good for me.)

Nieyao misunderstanding each other and mutually pining while having frequent angry sex (also carried over from the previous forecast, based on a kink meme prompt I submitted myself three years ago)

Modern AU NHS&MY frenemies story, where nieyao are exes reconnecting and NHS is determined to prevent this at any cost (based on a prompt)

Nie bros feels in the squid!NHS verse (based on a prompt, at this point I have only the vaguest of ideas but the concept is cute)

My mind has betrayed me and started clamouring for a spin-off of Good to be back (aka the 3zun kink fic no-one asked for). A no porn, no plot, just talking prequel to a wildly unsuccessful PWP is a terrible fic idea for many obvious reasons, but it's writing itself in the corners of my brain anyway, so. Maybe.

Feel free to poke at me about any of these if you're interested, talking helps ideas take shape. Also, I take prompts (although as you can see from all the unfulfilled prompts on the list, I can make no promises about speed).

8.7k into Out of Qianwo Pool, two story beats left to go. I'm getting there.

“No!” Nie Mingjue’s face creased into a frown. That had come out more forcefully than Meng Yao meant it to. He was being ungracious. But Meng Yao wanted to sleep with Nie Mingjue again someday. He’d wanted it before with a wistful yearning that he hadn’t truly expected to ever be fulfilled; now that he’d actually experienced it, he knew the possibility of a repeat occurrence would become an all-consuming obsession.

JGY is so funny because his relationship to social mobility is almost transgender except that it's specifically like oh I'm not changing my gender you see I would never do that because that's incorrect I am simply restoring social correctness order by being recognized as my correct gender which was tragically misperceived, but you see, crucially, the gender I want to be recognized as is the one I was assigned at birth

do fic readers know that their comments actually influence the course of the story sometimes? i don't mean in a "you need to write it this way because i say so 😡" type of comment, i mean when people are asking questions or really engaging with the plot and the themes in the comments they sometimes bring up things that i didn't even think of, or dig into parts of the story that i've overlooked, or get really interested/fixated on something i was going to just kind of glance over--and it has me going 'oh wait that's actually really interesting, that's a good point' and fully adding or tweaking or changing things about the story going forward. i'm literally adding an entire additional chapter to something right now because someone's comment had me like "oh i didn't dig into that as much as i could have." you have impact!

Six Sentence Sunday

Another snippet from the Weird Smut Fic, now tentatively titled Out of Qianwo Pool. I'm at 7k and done with the sex scene. Total might end up being around 9k? Or maybe more; there are four story beats left for me to hit and 500 words each might not be enough.

“Of course,” said Nie Mingjue immediately. “Whatever you need, A-Yao.” Nie Mingjue was not a naturally talkative man, but he kept up a constant stream of words as he gently worked Meng Yao open. It was mostly murmured reassurances—‘I’ll take care of you’, ‘You’re safe now’. At once point he started telling Meng Yao how pretty he was before clearing his throat and going back to the theme of how everything would be all right. Meng Yao would have quite liked to hear more about that, but he greedily drank in Nie Mingjue’s earnest attempts at comfort too.
