#having worked with many species of lungfish heres my hot takes for each one#australian: puppies babies my best friends and most scientifically interesting species alive i love them#south american: absolute goobers. dumb as hell. i watched one struggle for 5 minutes to figure out how to eat worms out of a bowl. i love#spotted: shy little sock puppets. you see them once maybe every 10 mins when they surface for a breath and thats it. my entire heart.#gilled: mischievous lads. also dumb as hell. i did successfully target train one so thats something. very funny little guys i love them#never worked directly with the other two species#my old boss said they used to have a west african but he bit the australian so he had to go#marbled gets points for being extremely pretty

It’s always a fucking trip to see a sturgeon next to someone, because on their own they just look like fish, but when there’s a guy there you see how fucking big they are

Largest animal genome sequenced — and just 1 chromosome is the size of the entire human genome
Scientists sequenced the largest known animal genome in a species of lungfish — ancient fish that breathe air.
Scientists have sequenced the largest known animal genome — and it's 30 times bigger than the human genome. The genome belongs to the South American lungfish (Lepidosiren paradoxa), a primeval, air-breathing fish that "hops" onto land from the water using weird, limb-like fins. The fish's DNA code expanded dramatically over the past 100 million years of evolutionary history, racking up the equivalent of one human genome every 10 million years, researchers found. The findings could shed light on how genomes expand across the tree of life...

Personally i do not like it when people reblog my posts with tags like “ew gross” or “ugly fish” or “i dont like him”. I actually like sturgeons a lot. I also dont understand why people who don’t like sturgeons bother with a blog called sturgeonposting. Its not a big deal but it makes me go >:/
