“When we started rehearsals for Daddy Long Legs, Fred’s wife Phyllis was very ill with cancer. Fred kept hoping she’d pull through, knowing there was no real hope. From time to time, when his anguish was too great, he would bury his face in his towel and after a minute he would ask: “Did you meet Phyllis? She’s such a lovely girl. I don’t know if she’ll make it…”
Fred took two weeks off after the funeral. The whole company was told not to mention his loss. He came back quite altered—his face was very strained. At first he had difficulty concentrating, and he tended to be tetchy. Again, he would stop from time to time, bury his face in his towel, and cry.”
— From Leslie Caron’s autobiography Thank Heaven: A Memoir, 2009
