     eyes  are  trained  on  the  ceiling  ,  counting  the  many  minuscule  details  of  the  paint  work  as  theo's  voice  plays  like  a  backing  track  across  the  room  .  andie  hums  ,  the  invitation  of  thoughts  almost  far  more  interesting  than  what  her  friend  was  speaking  about    –    keyword  being  almost    –    it's  the  same  old  conversation  ,  battle  of  the  bands  ,  girl  problems  or  everything  in  between  ,  but  not  like  andie  minded  .  she  loved  hearing  theo  talk  about  everything  &  nothing  all  at  once  .  she  groans  dramatically  ,  rolling  onto  her  side  as  the  decision  to  come  back  down  to  earth  hits  her  .    “  you  ever  thought  about  putting  little  glow  in  the  dark  stars  on  your  ceiling  ?  ”    question  comes  as  a  surprise  ,  brow  raising  as  she  turns  to  the  brunette  .    “  i  think  it'd  complete  the  whole  ...  ”    signals  a  hand  gesture  up  &  down  and  all  around  ,  a  personal  showcase  of  theo's  aesthetic  ,  wrapped  neatly  in  a  bundle  .    “  aesthetic  of  the  place  .  ”    it's  also  code  that  she  hasn't  been  listening  for  a  good  ten  minutes  .

    “well, shit,” they muttered, looking down at the shattered remains of their phone before gingerly picking it up in an attempt to not cut themself on the shards of glass. embeth tried to power it back on, but it seemed that it was not going to happen. it was toast, that much was clear. it was their own fault, really. they’d been skating along the street, not paying enough attention and nearly tripped over some debris in the road. they supposed they were lucky that their phone was the only casualty from the near-accident. “so,” they mused aloud, “think i could get away with saying this was normal wear and tear?” the question was more of a joke at their own misfortune than anything else, but they were really regretting not getting that extra insurance now. and not backing it up anytime since. “at least things can only go up from here.” it was almost too optimistic, but embeth just had a good feeling that good things were coming their way.

      with  a  fair  share  of  bad  luck  on  the  loops  of  her  belt  ,  andie  knows  a  thing  or  two  about  broken  phone  screens    –   or  the  ability  to  use  one  without  cutting  your  finger    –   call  her  an  expert  in  the  field  ,  and  she'll  wear  the  badge  with  honour  .  she  looks  over  at  them  ,  a  hand  moving  to  clasp  over  an  open  mouth  ,  the  action  of  misfortunate  events  met  with  a  laugh  .  she  can't  help  it  ,  it's  a  natural  reaction  .  it's  beyond  repair  .    “  shit  ,  dude  .  you  could  try  ?  but  i  doubt  it'd  work  on  in  your  favour  .  ”    captures  her  lip  between  teeth  ,  moving  forward  to  examine  the  damage  before  nodding  her  head  ;  almost  as  if  she  came  to  a  conclusion  .  well  ,  at  least  agreed  with  the  wave  of  positivity  .    “  exactly  !  now  ,  i  feel  like  i  owe  you  food  as  a  sorry  present  ,  ”    kicks  up  her  board  that  she's  previously  rode  on  ,  holding  it  against  her  chest  as  she  looks  to  them  .    “  burgers  ?  or  pizza  ?  ”

       the  rest  of  the  band  left  before  she  could    ––   always  leaves  like  she  arrives  ,  late    ––    so  andie's  handed  the  generous  task  of  setting  up  for  the  next  session  ,  or  whoever  decided  to  walk  through  the  doors  later  on  in  the  day  .  her  mother  always  taught  her  to  be  a  team  player  ,  apparently  that  extended  to  competition  as  well  &  if  it  didn't  ,  andie's  been  playing  far  too  nice  for  far  too  long  .  red  guitar  pick  is  situated  between  teeth  ,  moving  sound  equipment  as  material  strap  secures  precious  cargo    ––    a  limited  edition  black  fender  stratocaster    ––    around  her  shoulder  .  she's  kicking  the  spare  wires  as  the  door  opens  ,  taking  the  pick  from  her  mouth  as  she  exhales  a  small  sigh  ,  turning  on  her  heel  .    “  hey  ...  ”    probably  a  delayed  reaction  ,  the  motion  of  teeth  digging  into  glossed  bottom  lip  evident  as  the  girl  came  into  vision  .  andie  wouldn't  brand  herself  an  awkward  person  ,  but  with  willow  it  was  ...  different  .  but  could  she  expect  anything  else  ?    “  wasn't  expecting  someone  to  come  this  quickly  ,  or  are  you  early  ?  ”    says  after  clearing  her  throat  ,  the  cause  of  thick  air  that  you  could  cut  with  a  knife  .  she  curses  herself  ,  maybe  the  awkwardness  came  from  her  &  not  her  ex  .    “   ––   congratulations  ,  by  the  way  .  ”

smoking  was  a  habit  jade  was  trying  hard  to  kick.  at  the  beginning  of the  week,  she  decided  that  maybe  it  could  be  her  new  year’s  resolution—  but  it’s  saturday  now,  and  doesn’t  everyone  crave  a  cigarette  as  soon  as  they’ve  had  a  couple  drinks ??  she  squeezes  her  way  around  keith’s,  through  the  sea  of  other  pub-goers  and  toward  the  door,  fresh  stick  of  malboro  already  slipped  out  of  the  packet  and  secured  between  her  fingers.  she  heads  for  the  little  picnic  bench  outside  as  soon  as  the  cold  evening  air  hits  her,  only  to  be  met  with  a  familiar  face  already  sitting  there.  “ andie !! ”  she  smiles. “ haven’t  seen  your  face  in  a while.  happy  new  year !!  can  i  join  you ?? ”  she  asks,  clearly  comfortable  enough  to  not  have  to  wait  for  an  answer  as  she  slides  onto  the  bench  facing  the  other  and  pulls  her  jacket  around  her  shoulders.

       it's  technically  her  break  ,  twenty  minutes  of  alone  time  before  tending  back  to  the  organised  chaos  of  a  saturday  night  ,  and  she's  chose  to  sit  it  outside  on  a  bench  ;  headphones  tightly  nestled  in  her  ears  ,  leg  jumping  up  &  down  from  the  dropping  temperature  .  andie  wishes  she  wore  tights  ,  mentally  taking  a  note  to  also  next  time  bring  a  jacket  .  it's  fucking  january  .  the  goosebumps  evident  on  skin  as  her  fingers  hold  onto  the  third  cigarette  of  the  night  ,  exhaling  a  cloud  that  surrounds  her  as  the  presence  of  the  other  momentarily  startles  her  ,  ripping  the  bud  from  her  ear  as  initial  greeting  is  lost  in  the  mixture  of  chords  .    “  shit  ,  jade  –  are  you  trying  to  give  me  a  heart  attack  ?  ”    there's  breathy  laughter  in  the  air  ,  gaze  following  the  female  as  she  takes  the  seat  across  from  her  .  andie  manages  a  smile    –    not  the  one  that's  meant  for  customers  or  drunken  assholes  ,  but  a  genuine  one  that's  reserved  for  people  she  actually  likes    –   before  barely  clothed  shoulders  shrug  upwards  .    “  i've  been  here  ,  or  at  home  ...  not  that  hard  to  find  me  ,  if  y'wanted  to  ,  anyway  .  ”    another  inhale  of  smoke  ,  flicking  ash  in  the  tray  provided  ,  serving  as  a  centre  piece  between  the  pair  .    “  but  enough  about  me  ,  how  about  you  ?  how's  life  ?  ”

❛   ♫   ·   »    kail peery,  cis female,  she/her    «     wow …  andria  may  “andie”  palmero   just  told  me  that  their  band,  quickswitch,  got  accepted  into  that  battle  of  the  bands  thing.  wait,  you  don't  know  them?  i  could've  sworn  i  saw  you  two  together  at  keith’s pub.  well,  nevermind.  they're  twenty one  and  they're  the  guitarist  of  the  band.  when  they're  not  playing  music,  you  can  usually  find  them  falling  off  their  skateboard  while  attempting  new  tricks,  or  trying  to  walk  off  a  killer  hangover.  i  think  you'd  like  them—  they're  so  enigmatic,  but  …  also  kind  of  forthright,  i  suppose.  you'll  know  it's  andie  if  you  ever  meet  them,  because  they're  the  walking  embodiment  of  smudged  eyeliner  and  an  all-black  ensemble,  the  reckless  activity  of  stick  and  poke  tattoos  under�� the  influence,  casual  and  platonic  affection  and  the  cry  of  youth  being  a  bit  too  loud.
