8 - Artist Research: Petra Collins - The Teenage Gaze

I chose Petra Collins because I always admired and related to her work. Her photographs always feel intimate, honest and DIY. 

This work consists mostly of either analog shots or iPhone pictures to give a more intimate and nostalgic look it it. 

I plan on filming my video on an iPhone 5SE and using an analog-looking filter on it even though I still don’t know what I’m going to film.

Moving forward I want to use mostly analog just like Collins and hopefully my work can feel as intimate as hers. She has inspired me to explore what it means to come of age and find your identity as a woman in the 21st century, the rawness and the loneliness and the nostalgia of it all - and I plan to take all of these ideas moving forward.

‘Coming of Age’

Petra’s book ‘Coming of Age’, addresses the struggles that young girls face as they approach adulthood. The book begins with her own childhood pictures, letters, and a short essay about her own struggles with family and mental health. She then progresses the book using art and photographs to showcase the obstacles that are brought about in the processes of growing up as a young girl. She uses bright lights and colours to highlight her models, “her photos have always sought to present women in a way that isn’t exploitative and sexualised, and instead grants them power in their rawness.”

What I love about her collection of images, is that they’re all different in terms of composition and aesthetic, however they all hold the same context and can all be linked using this context, each image in its own unique way.
