The True Subject of Photography: A Perspective by Andrea Rum
Photography is often seen as a way to capture moments, people, and places, preserving them in a tangible form. However, I believe that photography is more than just a means of documentation—it is an art form in its purest sense, deeply rooted in the concept of “painting with light” [φῶς γραφή]. My journey into photography began at a young age, and since 1999, I have been dedicated to refining my craft and redefining the way we perceive this medium.
A fundamental question that often arises in photography is: What is the subject? Traditionally, the answer might be the person in the portrait, the landscape in the frame, or the object in focus. However, I challenge this notion. To me, the true subject of photography is not what is photographed, but rather the photographer themselves. The object is the image, but it is the artist behind the lens—their vision, choices, and emotions—that defines the essence of a photograph.
Every image is a reflection of the photographer’s perspective. The way light is used, the composition is arranged, and the moment is chosen all reveal the artist’s intent. A photograph is never just about what is seen; it is about how it is seen. This is why two photographers can capture the same scene and produce entirely different images—each one shaped by their unique interaction with the subject.
By shifting the focus from the object to the photographer, we gain a deeper appreciation for the artistic process. Photography is not merely about pressing a shutter button; it is about translating vision into reality. It is about storytelling, emotion, and intention. It is about using light as a brush and the camera as a canvas to create something that resonates beyond the visible.
For me, photography is a lifelong journey of exploration and self-expression. Each frame I capture is an extension of my artistic voice, a glimpse into how I perceive the world. Through my work, I invite others to not only see but to feel—to engage with images in a way that transcends the ordinary.
To experience this perspective firsthand, I welcome you to explore my portfolio at andrearum.com, where photography is not just about capturing the world, but about interpreting it through the eyes of the artist.
