LA BOĂTE DE NUIT Thematic exhibition
Continuing its reflection upon locations dedicated to leisure activities â following on from last yearâs exhibition Landskating, les lieux du skate Ă travers le monde â, in 2017 the villa Noailles will devote its annual architecture exhibition to discos. Through a selection of projects from the 1960s to today, the exhibition aims to apprehend the architectural tools put into play in the conception of these emancipating spaces. Discos are a testing ground for architects: through technological and formal devices, they develop an artificial world with a controlled atmosphere that is isolated from the outside.
Alongside a collection of projects from France and abroad, a commission was placed with an architect to design a disco at the heart of the villa Noailles itself. Open for the duration of the exhibition, this pop up ânightclubâ highlights and offers to experience in vivo the exhibitionâs intent. The exhibition presents rare documents, some are unseen (plans, models, photographs, sculptures, graphic works, videos), photographic series and texts by guests contributors.

Persistent Joy
Regardless of where the works have actually come from, the exhibitions at Greenwood Street Project usually feel as if their material has been sourced directly from private collections. I guess itâs the intimate scale of the space, and also perhaps the functioning office (with âliveâ people) you walk through to reach it. But then all curated shows, I guess, function as temporary private collections/collations, that reflect the drives, whims and ideas of the person pulling them together.
Donald Holtâs Persistent Joy is a mix of works that he has personally collected, cajoled and snatched from their makers.  It forms a highly individual take on what it is to inhabit (however briefly, and in whatever state of consciousness) the varied environments one moves through. Shifting from outside to in (and then âoutâ again), the works are arranged as a sequence of spatialities: Andrew Browneâs tarnished nature scenes; Paul Knightâs intimate, ephemeral hotel room mise en scĂšne; and then sites of communal pleasure depicted in AndrĂ© Giesemann and Daniel Schulzâs post-euphoric club interior photos, plus Stefan Marxâs stylised, synecdochically iconic mirror ball (wow â got to use the âsâ word!).
In all of these image-based works, the absent human presence is suggested through traces, such as a forlorn smiley-face balloon, or a nature morte of used condoms. Like the spinning mirror ball, the party stops and starts at the flick of a switch.  And if the guest list is being constantly shuffled, we have to credit this to that other party-giver, whose anamorphic skull is concealed in Holtâs poster design for his exhibition.
