For aftg readers who hate on aaron simply because he's "homophobic" and not comprehending the kind of background he grew up in which was an extremely religious toxic christian household where his uncle was the literal priest with an emotionally unavailable mother who gave zero craps about him but still being able to emotionally abuse him and sometimes it'll turn to physical abuse and situations where it was nessecary for drug usage to calm his mind down and was his only escape, I just want you to understand that people with trauma are not inclined to fix themselves after all that mess they went through, there is no more "golden rule of life" they have to follow after all that shit life had them undergo, there are some people with trauma that seem fine and act like decent human beings but there are many other ways to react to trauma and his way of reacting to it is normal.

“thank you, you were amazing” is beautiful and heartbreaking and will haunt me forever, but honestly a really underappreciated moment is right before that when nicky’s giving him a hard time for taking so long in the locker room, and neil just looks at him and says so seriously, “i’m sorry,” and nicky’s like, “hey, chill, i was just messing with you,” because he doesn’t understand that neil is apologizing for lying to them and putting them in danger and neil thinks this is the last time he’ll see any of them and he just wants them to know that he’s sorry for all of it

Okay so in a lot of fics and things (literally all I've read mentioning this topic except for literally one), it mentions Aaron and his connection to his mom and how she was a terrible monster every second of every day. But that's just not how abuse and manipulation works. That's not how people work.

Aaron most likely grew up with a kind, loving mother who fed him and bought him a bike for his tenth birthday. She spent an entire day helping him put glow in the dark stars on his bedroom ceiling in the shape of real constellations. She let him stay up as late as he wanted. Every time he got an A on his report card, she'd take him to a local coffee shop and get him a strawberry smoothie and a chocolate cookie. She was such a good mom.

Yeah sure, sometimes she'd yell speak sternly at him for small things like forgetting to sweep, and sometimes she'd hit him, too, but that's okay, because she's right, he was the one at fault anyway, I should have remembered, I'm sorry. That's okay, just remember next time. (and if he's still crying, she'll give him one of her pills that will make him feel better). And the next day they'll pretend nothing happened and he'll make breakfast and she'll ruffle his hair before dropping him off at school. I love you.

And as he got older, she got more and more annoyed at the little things, less restrained with the hitting, but it's fine. She's always been like this. She'll get out of her mood eventually. They'll both pretend it never happened and he'll steal a few more pills from her purse and they'd be okay again. That's what happens. I love you too, Mom.

And then suddenly there's someone else in the house. Someone else who should be exactly like him (right?) but is angrier and hates Mom for some reason. Who looked ready to stab someone when he saw her hit Aaron again. Who didn't understand that she'll calm down eventually. That's just how she is. Let her calm down. You're overreacting, Andrew.

And then he starts to think that the other person understands, that he gets that she'll cheer up, you just have to give her time, but honestly his mind has been so fuzzy lately, but it's fine because he feels better, the pills makes him feel better. That's what Mom always said. (He stole an entire bottle of them from her bedside table a while back. He didn't think she noticed. He hopes she's taking them. They'll make her feel better.)

And Aaron can practically feel that his mom is gonna cheer up again, watch, it's gonna be next week at the latest.

But then Andrew kills her. He fucking kills her. He locks Aaron in the bathroom and tells him that the pills are bad, they make you feel bad. He tells Aaron that his mom was bad, and abusive, and that she was never going to cheer up and she was never going to stop hurting him.

But Aaron doesn't fucking understand. She was a kind and loving mother who bought him a bike for his tenth birthday and let him ride around town until sunset all summer. She spent an entire day helping him put glow in the dark stars on his bedroom ceiling in the shape of real constellations. It was even on a Thursday, in October! She let him stay up as late as he wanted, as long as he wasn't loud enough to wake her. Every time he got an A on his report card, she'd buy him a strawberry smoothie and a chocolate cookie from the coffeshop, even though he was slightly allergic to strawberries and didn't really like chocolate.

She was such a good mom.

not to revive my annoying-aftg-takes trend but i think that the problem the fandom has is that they try to fit each character in less than three traits + trauma and this dehumanizes them to an extreme to which everytime someone tries to interpret them in a more profound manner it seems out of character. this dehumanization does come partly from the books themselves, but the fandom amplifies it to a disgusting degree; it negates all the traits that make the characters relatable and believable as actual people, see: full of contradictions and perks and flaws. the aftg fandom especially seems to either romantize or completely erase them, and what do you have left? neil becomes an incompetent but bitchy crybaby, andrew becomes a glorified fuckboy with the sense of responsability of a fourty year old man who somehow has the tantrums of a five year old, kevin and aaron become the unlikeable punchline, matt and dan become the textbook definition of the black best friend trope, and so on. it takes such a childish approach to the dynamics and characters that it ends up ruining the entire concept of the books; that the fandom becomes so incapable of seeing flaws where there obviously are and overamplifying the existing flaws where it's convenient for their plastic interpretation so they can plausibly defend certain characters to death and completely antagonize certain others. it comes as no surprise that more than half of the fandom is incapable of critically consuming media, introspective reading and interpretation, and not simplifying the sensitive topics that the books try to portray, and it's sad that because of all this half the fandom ended up being so blatantly racist and ableist towards the characters they so claim to love and understand.
