The Feel, Felt Found Solution https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K1iHklqjF1Y One of the most powerful objection busters in the business is the Feel-Felt-Found solution. It can be adapted to handle many different types of objections. When the prospect raises an objection, you listen attentively then follow up using these three agreeable steps: 1. “I understand how you FEEL.” This statement avoids being argumentative and takes prospects’ objections seriously. It tells them you were listening and shows that you do indeed have their best interests at heart. 2. "Many of our clients FELT that way before they invested in our services. For instance, Mr. Miller is in your line of work [church, age group, or other category].” This shows prospects that their concerns are valid and the fact that you name other customers they can relate to who had the same concern builds trust in you. “He worried about that but...” 3. What he FOUND was that... [your answer] there were lots of people with [concern]. However, his family enjoyed the club facilities, the contacts were valuable to his business, etc. Here are some examples that put all three steps together: I understand how you feel about our company having a $5,000 set-up fee while others do not. In fact, last year we were working with XYZ company from your state and their marketing director felt exactly the same way as you do. However, he found that being able to track the effectiveness of his ads by using our Marketing Commander solution saved him twice that much in the first month alone. And ten times that amount over the first year. As you know, no one else in the industry offers the ad- and phone-tracking features that we do. How much do you think you would save if by using our Marketing Commander technology you could cut out the 50-60% of your ads that are not effective? Or Dr. Smith, I understand how you feel about the cost of membership. In fact, just a couple of months ago I was talking with another prospective member, Dr. Johnson, and he felt the same way you do. However, what he found was that on joining the club he instantly picked up more patients, easily paying for his yearly member- ship in the first couple of months alone! Don’t you think that a golf club might make an excellent source of business for a chiropractor like yourself? Or I know how you feel about the cost of upgrading to our silver or gold levels. A lot of people felt that way before they changed. But what they find is that the additional convenience of receiving the instructional information on audio and in manual form more than makes up for the additional investment. The feel-felt-found approach has been proven for over 50 years as a good way to respond to almost any objection. It allows you to take your winning story from current customers and create a personal solution that your prospect can identify with. Kaizen is the Japanese term for continuous, never-ending improvement. In today’s fast-paced and ever-changing world, it’s essential to your success that you and all your employees embrace this principle. Develop a company library of books, audios, and DVDs on sales, motivation, leader- ship, time management, and other key topics related to the success of your company. Reward employees for reading, watching, or listening on their own time.If they don’t read, they don’t learn; and if they don’t learn, they aren’t worth hiring in the first place! Now if you want to also develop a service culture, operational excellence, and product innovation, while being green, planet friendly, and people friendly, so be it. But make sure you have the three critical cultures in place first. You can make it without all the others, but you can’t make it without the marketing and sales, or sustain it without kaizen. The others are optional. Kaizen, of course, starts with you. In the 1980s, it was said that if you didn’t double your knowledge every seven years, you were lagging behind! Can you imagine what that number of years might be today? At my peak, I was reading or listening to well over 100 non- fiction books a year! Now I’m down to about 50. How do you find time? Keep a book with you at all times. Read it while standing in lines, at the airport, on planes, or waiting for the kids. Turn off the radio in your car and turn your waiting time and travel time into learning time with audios! Don’t watch TV! There is an old saying that poor people have big TVs while rich people have big libraries. Commit the time to continued learning and improvement and lead your staff down the same path. I mean, if increasing your business was that easy you’d already have thought of it, and EVERYONE would be doing it, right? Actually, no. In fact, you’d be astonished at how easy it is to increase your income. It’s so simple that no one ever seems to do it! How Much Do You Charge? Now, let’s stand by the pro shop counter at a daily fee golf course in Texas as the phone rings, although it could just as easily be any business anywhere. “How much are your green fees?” says a voice on the other end. “Fifty bucks,” the man at the counter replies. The prospective player says, “Thanks,” and hangs up! Will he come? Will he call back? Will he spend his money with you or are you just going to let him go down the street? Sales training for yourself ALL and any frontline employees may not increase your business 100% but it will increase it significantly, even when just booking greens fees, taking orders, or selling coffee. And the increase will be staggering if you’re selling any high-ticket item! YOU CANNOT afford not to TRAIN yourself and staff how to sell! Leads are too precious to waste! Let’s look again at our pro shop counter scenario and, instead of merely responding with a price, let’s take the conversation in a different direction. As a good salesperson, YOU, not the customer, MUST take control of the conversation. Caller: How much are your green fees? Golf Pro: My name is Andrew. Sir, may I ask yours? Caller: Fred. Golf Pro: Fred, have you played our course before? Caller: No. Golf Pro: Well, let me ask you something, Fred. Do you like fast, smooth greens? Caller: Yes. Golf Pro: Well-manicured tees and fairways? Caller: Yes. Golf Pro: And a challenging layout that allows you to use every club in your bag, with five different sets of tees so you can pick the ones you’ll most enjoy? Caller: Yes. Golf Pro: Great. Then I know you are going to love playing here at Wounded Frog. Were you looking for a morning or afternoon time? Caller: Afternoon. Golf Pro: Great. I have a 12:30 slot—or would 1:50 be better for you? Caller: Err, 1:50. Now, does changing the 60-second conversation to something like that rather than just stating a price produce revenue? YES; at least 20%–30% more and possibly significantly more!! Notice that once you engage the customer in a conversation, the price is not asked again. This will work in upwards of 30% of your calls (of course, there are other scripts that get you beyond price). Is this approach for everyone? No; it’s only for those businesses that want to thrive and prosper even in a down economy, those businesses that know they must do more to get their share of the market and who realize that discounting alone is a path of doom! Sure, sometimes callers will go back to asking the price, but if you build some rapport and add some value before you tell them the price, sales will rise dramatically! I fully believe that a good idea executed quickly—even if it is less than perfect—will massively outperform an ideal idea that is implemented six months later. In addition, you’ll get months’ worth of leads that much earlier. If you can be fast and perfect, that would be much better. Just be FAST first. Let me give you a world-class example of this theory in action. Microsoft NEVER releases a perfect product; in fact, it is far from it. Instead, it works quickly to develop new technologies, which it then releases to John Q. Public and lets him find all the bugs so the company can fix them. That’s even cheaper than outsourcing the debugging offshore because it’s FREE! I am sure that Microsoft wishes to create a perfect product. Still, it also realizes that being ahead of competitors in launching products is far more critical than having an ideal product. The bottom line is this—if you have a good idea or a need for new clients, get in gear and get something going. Do it on a small scale if you have to, so you can make changes inexpensively later. But don’t drag out the process for weeks in search of perfection. Innovate, but don’t overbuild. Good is usually good enough to succeed and takes less time, money, and effort. While others are busy choosing the perfect font, you will have already licked the stamps on your latest campaign and be heading for the post office. At every stage of your business life, people are looking to slow you down, looking for perfection in an imperfect world. Let others struggle with the vice of perfection. Since your actions reflect your attitudes, you will not be inclined to make strong efforts to accomplish something if your attitude is negative and you do not believe it can be done.
