of father figures || orion & andromeda {flashback}

Date: July 1969

Location: 12 Grimmauld Place

It seemed as if the older she grew, the less time Andromeda spent outside of her parents’ home and the more she spent with her aunt and uncle. Being the middle sister had never been what she’d classified as ‘easy’ within the home of Cygnus and Druella Black, especially being between siblings as extraordinary as Bellatrix and Narcissa. While it was at least somewhat a figment of her own perception, she couldn’t help but feel... well, forgettable. It could perhaps even be called disappointing, though they’d never made any real efforts to display such emotions. Regardless, being in her parents’ home as of late had left her feeling pressured to perform above and beyond expectations, which in short, was exhausting. Orion and Walburga’s house, by comparison, was far different. She was a frequent figure there, whether it was for tea with Walburga or minding the children while their parents were otherwise occupied, and in turn, she’d gotten a sense of appreciation that she missed so frequently in her own home. While she would never admit it out loud, her aunt and uncle were just about as close to parents to her as they could possibly get, and in some ways she almost considered herself closer to them than the alternative.

As usual, she was trying to entertain Sirius and Regulus that summer afternoon as she relayed some fantastical story about an island of dragons of which the full plot was largely unknown as she was simply making it up as she went along. She was just getting to the part about the brave wizard who’d managed to strike a deal with a fearsome Peruvian Vipertooth when the familiar ring of her aunt’s voice sounded from downstairs, calling the boys to wash up for dinner. Even she wanted to continue, but knowing better than to encourage the boys to disobey their mother, she instead shooed them off with promises that they’d find out what happened after they ate. They seemed to be happy with the deal seeing that they were quick to scurry off upon her promise, but she chose not to follow. Instead, she wandered down the hall, fingers brushing lazily across the wallpaper as she went until she stopped in front of a familiar door. She wasted no time in knocking, and without waiting for permission to come in, she cracked the door open and peered right in.

“I thought I’d find you here.” Her tone was familiar and light, grin bright as she opened the door wider, bearing her weight on its frame as she leaned against it. Orion, while an intimidating figure to many, had always been what she could only describe as a father figure, and while private time with him was rare nowadays, it was always a joy to Andromeda to get it when she could. With quirked brows, she glanced around his study in keen interest before allowing her eyes to flicker back to him questioningly. “You don’t mind if I come in, do you? I’ve been around the boys for hours and I’m quite keen on having conversation that’s above a ten year old’s level.” @orion-blvck

Location: Hogwarts; Slytherin Common Room

Andromeda Black had never been one to lose her composure. Usually, she was the responsible one, the one who kept appearances up and minded the rules to the best of her ability. Despite all of this, the end of the school year was proving to be far more difficult than planned between a large workload and an even greater - yet unspoken - realization weighing heavy on her consciousness. It had left her sulkier than usual, perhaps even on edge when things had gotten particularly difficult for her to manage, and it hadn’t gone past the attention of other Slytherins. They’d all but chalked it up to the pressure of performing well and that at some point, she’d get over it, but Andromeda was experiencing a sinking feeling that it certainly wouldn’t.

It wasn’t so much that it was Rodolphus that she’d encountered so much as that he was there as she trudged her way down to the Slytherin Common Room from her dorm in the middle of another restless night. What had started as idle conversation made way for a silence, and while it was probably normal or even comfortable to him, it felt tense and heavy to her, full of indecision and doubt. For all intents and purposes, this was supposed to be the type of boy that kept her up at night. He came from a respectable family within the magical community, had a drive and ambition that could only spell out for success, and for all his faults, even she had to admit that he was traditionally good looking. Part of her wondered if her problems were only due to the fact that she hadn’t found the right person yet, that if she’d just tried to connect with someone that wasn’t him, she could keep that relationship at a level of friendship and keep her romantic feelings for someone that her family would actually approve of.

How this translated in her head to a need to kiss Rodolphus was beyond her. She could only suppose that she was so conflicted that she just needed to check and see if, as ridiculous as it sounded, she could dispel all of her confusion with something as simple as locking lips with a prestigious pureblood. Casting a glance over at the boy seated next to her, Andromeda shifted, leaning forward ever so slightly. 

“Mother and father keep saying you and Bella would be a good match.” Her tone was casual, eyes looking him from top to bottom before flickering back up to meet his gaze. This wouldn’t have been the first time she’d come onto someone, and it wouldn’t be the last, so she surely knew what she was doing as she shifted herself even further. “I suppose that’s true, but have you ever wondered? Because I have.” It was a boldfaced lie, but it still had seemed to pique his interest all the same.

He was the one to close the remaining space between them, their lips pressing together in what was a surprisingly leisurely kiss despite the implications of her words beforehand. Still, the lack of answers she received from it frustrated her enough to deepen it, trailing her hands from where they were placed on his chest up to twine her arms around his neck in some attempt to pull him ever nearer. A brash clearing of someone’s throat was enough to startle her out of the exchange. Andromeda jumped, tearing away from Rodolphus in order to find the source of the noise only to be met with the sight of her older sister, someone who looked far from pleased about what she’d just walked in on. 

“Dromeda,” Bellatrix snapped in a harsh whisper, snapping her fingers in a command for the girl to approach, “Come here. Now.”  It was humiliating, as if she were being called like a dog, and yet she relented. Casting an apologetic gaze over to Rodolphus, the brunette pushed herself off of the couch before sulking her way up to her sister, who responded by pulling her harshly into her dorm by the arm with whispered threats of hexing her into oblivion - or worse, telling their parents - if she was ever caught doing something like that out in the open again. 

However, having Bella witness that was far more preferable to the alternative. For all her efforts, Andromeda’s mind still lingered on blonde hair and blue eyes, easy smiles and a feeling of comfort she’d been unable to replicate since she’d first sensed it. Perhaps she still hadn’t fully realized what it was about at that point, but by the beginning of her fifth year, Andromeda knew one thing for certain centering around those feelings: she’d managed to fall for none other than Ted Tonks, and no amount of kissing - even if it was Rodolphus -  could allow her to avoid it.

The tea shoppe at St. Mrungo’s was less crowded than it once had been. There had been days months ago when Lucinda would have been grateful for the opportunity to be able to immediately put her order in on her break and have her choice of seats, but truly this wasn’t a pleasant lull that the staff never mentioned aloud for fear of jinxing it. This was something more. People were afraid to come to St. Mungo’s and not to mention they were still working on some of the parts that had been more damaged in the attack. She knew that Ted was assisting in aiding the Order with all of their needs for healing and that they had Molly Weasley on hand as well. She herself had offered up her assistance to anyone within Aversio whether she was at St. Mungo’s or home. She’d redoubled her efforts in guiding people her direction rather than Ted’s she’d noticed him inching out and well she wasn’t certain if she was doing it out of some loyalty towards a fellow healer or that she feared that more would follow Ted and weaken Aversio’s position even more. Whatever it was, she’d made herself available to anyone who needed it. 

Accepting the tray with her tea and plate of scones she realized she’d never bothered to look for a place to make herself comfortable. Spotting a familiar face she couldn’t help but smile as she crossed the shoppe to where they occupied a small table “Mind a bit of company? I’d be willing to share this plate of scones.” hse asked as she came to a stop at the edge of the table. 

Despite being far more amicable than many of those who still associated with the Black name, Andromeda was never one to say no to private time. Her days as of late had been far too busy, far too full of people and interactions and lacking in the time she’d often coveted to have to herself in some desire to recharge. It was part of being in the thick of conflict, she figured, that she had to sacrifice some of the normal, comfortable parts of her life. However, with Ted busy at work dealing with injuries within the Order and her daughter growing antsier by the day being kept in one place, she had rationalized that perhaps it wouldn’t be too bad of a thing to get some distance and space if it were for the sake of her daughter. After all, she was one of the most innocent in the midst of all the chaos, her only fault being the fact that she was born to parents who were considered an unfit match by the pureblooded elite, and part of Andromeda couldn’t help but feel guilty. Whether it was guilt for spoiling her childhood with the conflict that seemed to surround them at all times or guilt as simple as being for who she once was that had brought this attention to their family was beyond her, but she tried not to dwell on it all too much and instead focused on solutions. 

A trip to a shoppe in London wasn’t exactly what she would categorize as equally enjoyable to being able to go to the park or some other activity that Dora would have likely preferred. However she surmised that the couple of treats she’d ordered that were now lined along the table were enough to make up for any lack of active movement that she was missing. While the younger of the two was too busy deciding what to nibble on first to concern herself with conversation, her mother had busied herself with perusing the news, pointedly ignoring the reports of the ministry when a familiar voice piped up. Peering over the top of the paper, she was met with the sight of Lucinda, and with a short laugh of relief, she nodded eagerly at the woman’s question. “Of course. I’d never say no to good company.” Her expression shifted slightly, sheepish but still open as she joked, “Though I doubt there’s any need for you to share your scones, as lovely as they look. It seems Dora has enough treats to last her for a while.”

“Hm… Well, I would say the obvious choice is when Dora was born, though I’d say the first time her hair changed color is probably a close, but related, second. She was barely a day old or so at the time, and seeing that it was far from expected, I obviously had quite a shock when I first saw it. ‘Course, it ended up being quite the proud moment as a mother, for sure.”

Steve Harrington: What are 3 things you’d bring on a babysitting adventure?

“Only three? I feel like I need a whole slew of things just to keep my own child in check, but I suppose my wand would be the first thing. It’s surprising how many charms there are that work well for keeping an eye on a child. Other than that, I’d say I’d need a babysitting partner - for a second pair of eyes, of course - and as much chocolate as you can manage to bring. Is it risky considering how nightmarish sugar rushes are? Of course. If you time it right, though, you get the benefits of occupying the kid with candy but you’ll be gone before any of the manic energy hits.”

“At the risk of sounding way too sappy for my own good, it’s obviously wherever my family is. I’ve come to find over time that home is much more a person - or in my case, a group of people - than a place, and I can confidently say that no matter where I end up, it’ll always be home as long as Ted and Dora are near.”

Andromeda had grown used to the fact that the darker side of their society was all but determined to ruin any joy for those who went against them, but the attack on the Ministry had made her all too aware that it was only more infuriating when the most special of moments had ben spoiled.  If it were anyone else, she supposed she would feel sorry for them, perhaps feeling even a sense of frustration if the mood struck. However, the attack had fallen on Ted’s birthday, and while she was sure it wasn’t as personal as she’d taken it, the fact of the matter was that it had taken her a long time to filter through any feelings outside of anger. If anyone deserved to see a day devoted to them spoiled the least, it was her husband. For all of the discrimination he’d received at the hands of those that wished to see him out of the magical community for good for something as simple as his ancestry, one would think he’d dealt with enough. Instead, the whole family was left to put any celebrations on the back-burner in lieu of focusing on the more dire circumstances at hand. While Andromeda had been far too occupied with ensuring that both her husband and daughter were safe and cared for while things sorted themselves back out into some sort of half-normalcy, the birthday had been far from forgotten.

Despite her strong desire to ensure that they made up for the missed celebration, she had also been determined to make it as normal as possible. That meant no big parties or extravagant gifts, no seven layer cakes or attention-grabbing surprises. With so much around them having changed so dramatically in the span of a month or so, she figured normalcy was something that would probably be taken with gratitude. From breakfast, which she’d attempted to make herself despite her continuing lack of skill at cooking, to presents and a sticky, messily decorated cake that could only be attributed to Dora, it was surprising at how normal it seemed to feel despite the inherent un-normalcy of their environment at the present. The evening had since wound down, with Andromeda busying herself with cleaning up after the mess the small celebration had managed to make while Dora had all but dragged her father off with some excuse of wanting to show of some special surprise she’d made for the occasion. Considering that it wasn’t far from the little girl’s bedtime, she figured that the girl would probably end up aslesp before she got the chance to finish, but that was alright. If she could allow Ted the luxury of just enjoying quality time with their child instead of fussing over dishes on this day especially, Andromeda was more than happy to make such a relatively small sacrifice.

She’d just managed to get the last sticky handprint of frosting - all thanks to a certain six year old who’d decided her fingers were the best utensils for eating cake - wiped off of the countertops when footsteps stopped in the doorway. Glancing upwards, she was met with the sight of her husband once more. It was enough to elicit a fond grin from her lips, one that more often than not seemed to grace her features when she was around her husband. “I’m assuming she ended up dozing off, hm?” She commented wryly, setting the cloth she’d been gripping onto the counter before approaching. A quick kiss was pressed to his cheek once she reached him as a greeting, and with eyes alight in amusement and contentedness, she continued teasingly, “Well? It couldn’t have been the worst birthday you’ve ever had, was it?” @tcdxtonks

reality check || aurora & andromeda

While there had been times that Andromeda had questioned what her life would be like had she stayed or made different choices when it came to her family, there was no real question that in the long run that she was where she was supposed to be. The Black Family - and by extension, the majority of pureblood society - had turned their backs on her, and while she had them in her life, they were just... toxic. That was the only word she could think of that came close to describing that unfortunate aspect of her past. For that reason alone, she would never consider the idea of voluntarily going back to that life for a mere millisecond, so discovering the fact that Aurora Sinistra of all people was marrying one of their kind - of her own volition, at that - was appalling to her senses. 

Despite her strong opinions on the matter, Andromeda hadn’t particularly been trying to seek the woman out. After all, she knew how it felt to be berated for her decision-making, and while every fiber of her being was screaming to shake the girl by the shoulders and ask what in the world she was thinking, part of her knew confrontation wasn’t necessarily the best first course of action. Instead, she waited it out, wanting to take advantage of the right opportunity, but in typical fashion, she’d gotten impatient as it continued to weigh on her mind and conscience. That was precisely why as she managed to catch a glance of the woman in question passing by an open doorway as she’d been poring into a well-worn copy of Sonnets of a Sorcerer, the brunette was all too tempted to break her silence.

While the allure of private time wasn’t lost upon her, a split second decision caused her to tuck a piece of parchment in her book as some sort of makeshift bookmark before she quick-stepped her way towards the doorway. The woman had since passed the doorway but wasn’t particularly far away, so she chose to call out to the woman’s retreating back. “Excuse me?” She raised her tone, brows raised expectantly despite her attempts to hide her displeasure. “Aurora? Could I steal you for a moment?” She at least hoped it would be momentary, though there was no real telling how extensive - or, in truth, how intense - the conversation would end up until they were in the thick of it. @auroras-sinistra
