CHAPTER 26 - UNION PIER
CHAPTER 26 – UNION PIER
Addy’s death was two days behind me. I had been walking west since, sleeping in abandoned houses at night. I was walking parallel to the Indiana border on the old dirt roads that webbed the unimportant parts of the state. The zombies were a lot less dense out there. Eventually I would happen upon the southern end of highway 94 and I could just follow that north until I found Union Pier.
My mouth…

CHAPTER 25 - NO MONUMENTS FOR FALLEN BASTARDS
CHAPTER 25 – NO MONUMENTS FOR FALLEN BASTARDS
PART FOUR: UNION PIER
“Country roads, take me home to the place I belong.”
Take Me Home, Country Roads – John Denver
Behind the house, I found a stack of firewood. The stars above were clearly shining and frost was forming on all surfaces. I had a bundle of small logs tucked underneath my right arm, the fingers on my left hand still hurt too much to be of any use. I walked in through the back…

CHAPTER 24 - ARMAGEDDON
CHAPTER 24 – ARMAGEDDON
Boone fell backward as his body was riddled with bullets. The men in the camp scrambled and panicked, trying to find their weapons. Roger had run from the trailer, firing toward the headlights. I ducked down and crawled to Addy. She was laying face down by the door.
“Addy!” I yelled. She didn’t wake. I shook her violently and yet she remained unconscious.
“Wake up!” I screamed. Men outside were…

CHAPTER 23 - YOU’RE DEAD, AND THE DEVIL KNOWS IT
CHAPTER 23 – YOU’RE DEAD, AND THE DEVIL KNOWS IT
It was dark. A harsh, orange glow shone between the bars of the cattle trailer. The people, or pirates, as I had come to think of them, had built a large fire in the center of their camp. There were about fifty simple tents set up around the fire.
Some guy, who I came to learn was called Grubbs, was butchering the deer and cooking slabs of meat in the fire. Grubbs was a large, greasy man. He wore…

CHAPTER 22 - SKULL ISLAND
CHAPTER 22 – SKULL ISLAND
The bump of a pothole woke me. I couldn’t move my hands. They were tied up with twine. My feet were tied as well. A cloth had been tightly tied around my head and in my mouth as a gag. My hair blew around in my face. We were in the back of Kong’s truck.
Addy was next to me. She was still out cold. There a cartoon cloud shape on her right forearm that was pouched out from a zombie back at the…

CHAPTER 21 - SKULL ISLAND
CHAPTER 21 – SKULL ISLAND
I ducked back behind the log and looked at Addy again. Sammy was worried. He looked at me. I waved my hand, trying to signal “no” to him. He nodded. He placed his hand on Addy’s arm, trying to calm her down. I could see him whispering to her, but couldn’t hear. The only word I could make out was “please.”
“Who the fuck is Milo?” One of the other men from the trucks asked.
“How the fuck would I…

CHAPTER 20 - S.S. VENTURE
CHAPTER 20 – S.S. VENTURE
The camp the others had made up wasn’t very far from where Adam knocked me out. Which made sense. It’s not like they’d have an easy time carrying me down the highway.
A whole day wasted. We would have been in Union Pier at that very moment if I had just kept my cool. That realization really hurt. At that exact moment I would be sitting in my bed, talking to Heather, dazzling her with the story of…

CHAPTER 19 - THE MASOCHIST
CHAPTER 19 – THE MASOCHIST
Addy never had me take watch. She woke up Adam, and told him to let me sleep, who told the same thing to Sammy when he woke him up. They knew. I mean, they didn’t know what I did, but they knew I was going crazy. they could see it painted on me like a bright red symbol of insanity. What they didn’t know is that I didn’t sleep at all that night.
I got up as soon as the sun crept over the horizon.…

CHAPTER 18 - THE LONELY HOUSE
CHAPTER 18 – THE LONELY HOUSE
Tumblr media
The sunlight that poured in through the cracks of the shutter seemed harsher than usual. I felt pain in my eyes as they adjusted to the laser beams setting my retinas on fire. My head pounded as if someone was using a battering ram on the inside of my skull. Folks, I was hungover.
“Milo.” Addy said, tapping my arm. It felt like she was screaming through a bullhorn.
“I’m up.” I said. She grabbed…

PART THREE: SKULL ISLAND
“You see, the devil haunts a hungry man. If you don’t want to join him, you gotta beat him.”
To Beat The Devil – Kris Kristofferson
I held Everett’s little white blanket so tight that my skin was nearly the same color. There were so many questions circling around in my head. Did they make it to Union Pier? Did they all make it to Union Pier? Whose blood is on that…

CHAPTER 16 - REMEMBER THE ALAMO TOWNSHIP SAFE ZONE
CHAPTER 16 – REMEMBER THE ALAMO TOWNSHIP SAFE ZONE
Tumblr media
The knife sliced through the red flesh and crimson liquid spilled out onto the cutting board. Heather and I stood at the kitchen island, cutting up vegetables for the dinner salad.
We lived in a modest little house in Colon, Michigan. We rented it from Heather’s grandmother. Colon wasn’t my ideal town to live in, but it was where Heather grew up, and the boys were happy. So that made me content,…

CHAPTER 15 - THE TUNNEL
CHAPTER 15 – THE TUNNEL
Tumblr media
My eyes fluttered open. A second before I was waiting for Sarah to tear our my eyes or eat me or something else equally horrible. It was a dream. No. It was a nightmare. The first I had had in ages. The room was washed in orange with the early morning sunlight that soaked the room.
“Oh fuck me.” I said as I gathered the will to left myself off the couch. I was sore, like I had slept on a pile of…

CHAPTER 14 - YES, THERE IS A KALAMAZOO
CHAPTER 14 – YES, THERE IS A KALAMAZOO
Tumblr media
The highway acted as an artery, but instead of transporting blood, it carried a steady flow of smelly people eaters. We walked west beside the highway, keeping just out of sight of the undead commuters. We had to put some distance between us and the road as it became level with the rest of the terrain. Before, they were trapped, but after we got past the hills, they were able to spread out into…

CHAPTER 13 – HIGHWAY 94 Quit all that fuckin’ cryin’, bitch! My eyelids split open. Kong’s words woke me. I didn’t mind being awake, I didn’t want to relive that nightmare in an actual nightmare.

CHAPTER 11 – THE EIGHTH WONDER OF THE WORLD Her screams were pocked with grunts and barks from multiple men with her. Like cartoon characters, Addy, Sammy, and I slowly peaked around the edge, one head on top of the other.
