🇹🇭 Khemjira

Episode 3 of 12 || Airing on: iQiYi, Saturday

Peem might be trying to prevent people from falling in love with him with those sunglasses but then he proceeds to summons the rain, turning himself into a wet shirt contest. And with Charn getting pushed into the water later on this might as well be called the wet shirt episode. All the actors are doing so well, though I'm still particularly loving Jet. He's such a firecracker with his protective nature and short temper. I loved the historical lesbians and I really hope people are right that they are Jet and Charn from the past! I feel bad for Praemai and that loser of a guy she seems to be dating. Him and his loser friends aren't shit and it's entirely their own fault that they're in mortal peril.

🇹🇭 Shine

Episode 4 of 8 || Airing on: WeTV, Saturday

She's calling his bluff! He did just come from the press so why is he going back there?!?! I bet she has her suspicions and she's probably right. This whole affair they've got going on is going to blow up in their faces and it's going to be delicious. I honestly think Trin is giving in too much to Victor. He's gotta know that Victor, his young student, is infatuated with him so I really wish he'd set some boundaries and not indulge him all the time. Trin, you have the power to put a stopper to this weird fight(?) Victor and Thanwa have going on so please use your words and set them right because it can't be nice to have these two people fight over you like children. I am however really happy that it was Trin who made the first move. He's been so passive in their relationship so far so it was really good to see him actively choose something for once.

🇨🇳 Desire

Episode 9 of 16 || Airing on: Gagaoolala, Saturday

This show is still a darling of mine but as someone who has read a shit ton of ABO in my life I was surprised by how this show approaches heat and rut and as a result how non-con heavy the NC scenes came across in this episode. By ABO fanfiction standards, from all I've read, being in heat shouldn't have just made them weakly resist, they should have been desperate to get fucked. This is not to say that I dislike how they portrayed the scenes, it just means that it didn't match what I personally had expected and imagined which definitely affected my enjoyment of the episode (this is why I always try to manage my expectations before watching a new show, because if you've build up all these expectations based on the pilot trailer and then the show doesn't match those expectations it's hard not to be disappointing even if the show is good). Anyways, there are still so many episodes left of this show and I can't wait for the next episode.

🇹🇭 My Magic Prophecy

Episode 5 of 10 || Airing on: Youtube, Sunday

I'd been waiting to start this show because I feel like I've gotten burnt on JimmySea shows in the past, so I wanted to see what people were saying before I started it. This turned out to be a good choice for a completely different reason which is that I was sick today so I had all the time to binge the first 5 episodes and they didn't disappoint. I really like the story, the pairing and I'm also loving seeing another show in rural Thailand. Fun fact: I've did a road trip to Mae Hong Son a while back.

Episode 10 of 12 || Airing on: Youtube, Friday

Now that we know his fiancé has a french lover why don't they just get married and then follow their lovers to France? It seems like the obvious solution because they'll be parted either way. Not entirely sure I understand the whole royal matrimonial water thing but they all seem very scared of it. I'm getting a bit more into this show again after this episode since it hit a lot better than the past few have done for me.

🇹🇼 The Promise of the Soul

Episode 10 of 12 || Airing on: Gagaoolala, Friday

"I'm the one who cares about you the most" he says as he locks the person in question in a locker. Baby boy, I don't quite think your actions match your words. This show is oddly compelling even if the plot is real weird. No idea how this is going to end and I still worry about that but I love our main pairing so much so they better get a happy ending (or at least one that makes sense).

Episode 4 of 13 || Airing on: iQiYi, Friday

I don't have much positive or negative to say about this show, so I'll probably not include it in the recap going forward. I don't think I've followed the plot closely enough to understand what's happening and I do think this might not quite be my type of humor, so I don't think any comments I have on it are worth much.

🇹🇭 Only You

Episode 6 of 14 || Airing on: Netflix, Friday

I'm really not a big fan of the trope where a character tries to make their romantic interest jealous in order to get what they want. On top of this I'm also not a big fan of someone acting on jealousy. Grow up, the two of you! I love the whole bodyguard basis for this plot and how they've handled it and I really like the actors and the visuals of this show but I think there are too many small things that bother me about this show for it to become a favorite of mine. I'll definitely still watch it until the end so we'll see whether it can stick the landing.

🇹🇭 Doctor's Mine

Episode 6 of 10 || Airing on: Gagaoolala, Sunday

This might be the only time this show appears in my recap because this show took a wild turn after episode 5 and got even worse with episode 6. I did a full on rant about it here after episode 6 if you want to know why I'm frustrated and disappointed in this show. And if you haven't started this show yet I'd suggest you wait until it's finished airing so you can have peoples final verdict on the show as a whole. It's definitely not looking good right now.

So, I was rewatching the scene with Krailert and Win and the optimistic in me wants to have a sliver of hope that Krailert and Naran will have a happy ending SO. You know how Win mentions that he'd quit acting just to run away with Krailert, then talks about a life they could build together, but Krailert doesn't accept? Then Win is disappeared.

I don't think they will make a character go through the same sh¿t twice. Also their movie date reminded me of an uncle of mine who was a guerrilero then political prisoner and he attempted to escape the country disguised as a woman.... what I'm getting at is: what if they actually flee the country? What if this time Krailert refuses to lose his beloved a second time, he goes against his superiors, they make it out alive but they make us believe they didn't, and then the last we see of them is two guys taking off their wigs or idk in the US or wherever else. AND FIN

A Feast For A Fight

In episode 4 of Shine the series, Naran and Dao attend a very telling family meal.

The family are in what looks to be a very fancy Chinese restaurant. Everybody is using chopsticks which is not typical with thai food where a fork and a spoon are the custom or depending on the food, your hands.

Naran is struggling to use his chopsticks so Dao swoops in and places some food on his plate while her family glare on.

We already know that Dao is from a family of wealthy bankers and the implications so far is that Naran is from a much poorer family background.

This scene adds to the mismatched dynamic by indicating that Dao's family is actually thai-chinese and Naran is not.

Who cares? You may think but it definitely would have probably bothered her family that he was an "outsider," both in status and "blood."

I an going to throw out a wild speculation that Naran and Dao may have met and started courting at university.

We see here her mother side eye her father as if to say "do you see how hopeless this boy is?"

Dao's father then pointedly uses his chopsticks to neatly place some food on Dao's plate.

This does two things -

putting food in someone else's bowl shows that you are being considerate of them, placing their comfort above your own.

It is also a dig at Naran. The dad is indicating that he can take much better care of Dao. Naran lacks the skills or the mindset to place Dao first.

Dao's sister in law asks how they've been doing and Dao rushes to answer, not letting Naran speak but emphasising that he has been very busy with work, suggesting that she is afraid to let him talk freely in front of her family. I'm sure she already knows they disapprove.

But her brother jumps in with another jab and the awkward atmosphere continues.

Dao's dad then interrogates Naran over his work, asking if he has considered switching professions and then when Naran talks about being proud of his job he brings up the subject of financial security.

When Naran talks about promotion and the salary increase he can expect the dad immediately shuts him down with this very dismissive statement.

The difference in their status has never been more glaring.

And to add insult to injury, he then proceeds to offer Dao more food. The meaning is clear. I am providing for my daughter, what can you do?

Naran then snaps and proceeds to grab some food with his hands, shoving it into his mouth and wiping his hands on the table. He is being deliberately provocative as if to say, if you think I'm just a lowly savage then let me act like one.

Dao is mortified and drags him away.

Dao's mother cusses Naran out in Chinese as they leave. A confirmation of their thai-chinese status.

A Heartbreaking impasse

Even as Dao chastises Naran for embarrassing her in front of her family, she still offers to get her chauffeur to drive Naran home. Her chauffeur, yet another symbol of the gap between her and Naran's social status.

Is this a gesture to desperately try to hold on to him in spite of her personal grievance? She did a similar thing when they met for lunch before. She expressed her frustration at him being late but when he got upset and defensive in return she immediately backed down.

Is this a woman sensing that things are not working but still trying to hold on to the man she loves or is it an effort to control him? If her chauffeur sends him home then she knows where he is.

She spoke over him in front of her family as well, clearly uneasy about what he might say but not without reason, considering her family.

Naran is quick to fire back as well and again, not unreasonably considering the way Dao's family treated him.

I imagine it feels like they are trying to change him to suit their own needs for a suitable partner for Dao. Perhaps he feels like Dao too is trying to change him?

He makes his excuses about going to the press and when Dao calls him out on it as he used that excuse already for his sexy rendezvous with Krailert, he throws it in her face that he has to work all hours because of the way her family look down on him.

However they got together and whatever feelings were had, I can't help but feel this relationship is doomed even without the fact that Naran is cheating on her with Krailert.

Can you please share more from Son Yuke and Euro? Recommended shows from them (individually)? Do you know some stuff about them regarding being casted in a Man's Love Romance together? I am so invested with them. I need someone who knows them to yap about them!!

Okay so I guess I can share a little bit about Son Yuke and Euro's works individually and them being casted in Shine because they've shared tidbits of this in the first press conference BOC held for Shine.

Son Yuke had been an actor under One31 (formerly known as Channel 5 or Exact) since 2008 and stayed there for the longest time before going independent in 2020. He's most famously known for his lakorns with actress Vill Wannarot (like Kaew Lorm Petch, Sao Noi, Tae Pang Korn, The Prince Who Turns Into A Frog). They are one of the most famous straight/hetero branded pairings or fixed CP in Thailand. For het cps, branded pairing kind of just mean that they get hired as a pairing for a lot of events together and they reunite for more than two dramas. Sure enough, audience still love and ship them (both casually and fanatically like any delusional BL shippers) but since the actress has an IRL partner, overall lakorn audience try not to cross their line most of the time (fun fact: Vill's ex is Jes Jespipat).

For me personally, my favorite lakorns from Son Yuke are Bad Beauty, Neth Mahunnop, Love At First Hate, Maya, Behind The Revenge, The Lady And Her Lovers (some i watched with vietnamese subs, some with english subs, some with no sub but go into the MDL pages of these dramas and you'll probably find some watchable links) but Shine is definitely the best and most well written script/role he's ever gotten so I wouldn't really recommend anything else if you're looking for quality TV starring Son Yuke because lakorns are... an acquired/niche (derogratory) taste =)))))))) Son is often (type)casted into confident, charming, arrogant bad boy so he's REALLY good at playing this kind of role.

The story for Son Yuke joining Shine was that during its development period, SonVill had a music festival event with MileApo in Viet Nam (September 2023). Pond and Son Yuke had known each other for almost 10 years because they've worked together before and Pond never thought he'd have a chance to work with Son Yuke because Pond thought they didn't click that much (gonna assume they've worked together back when Pond was still doing his event organising business). On the flight to the Viet Nam event, Pond had been seated next Son Yuke so he talked with Son and approached him about the Shine project and asked if he was interested and they've been in contacts for this project ever since (source: Shine Press Conference; timestamp 53:33). Pond said that he told Son that this role would get rid of all the criticisms that Son Yuke often get for his stiff/robotic-like acting 🤣 (the context for this is that if you took a round trip in Pantip lakorn discussions, the general consensus about Son Yuke is that he's a godly handsome face with stiff acting, his acting has improved immensely most notably in his 2021 revenge lakorn Bad Beauty, he's not like national household name male lead like other one31 pra eks because the roles he get are very plain and boring)

As for Euro, I haven't seen much of his lakorn works so I'm not sure if what I've seen are his best works but I was able to watch Hak Lai My Lady, Game Of Love, Samee Chua Kuen. I only finished Hak Lai My Lady but the other ones I have yet to finish more because CH7 lakorns long as hell, took my vietnamese subber forever to get around to subbing them and I ended up forgetting what I've watched so far to go back to finishing them. I previously introduced a bit about Euro's background in this ask so you can check out that post as well.

As for Euro casting story, when BOC approached Channel 7 (CH7) for the broadcasting of Shine on their TV network, the CH7 channel organisers asked BOC to keep their CH7 actors in mind for casting consideration. Of course BOC is not obligated to cast anyone from CH7 but CH7 actors can be up for consideration if they're suitable for the role. Euro said actually the first time he went casting for Shine, he didn't pass but he asked for another chance to cast and so the directors saw the determination in Euro's casting and thought that his passion and determination was exactly right for the character, Naran. And that's the story of how Euro got casted in Shine.

I think both Son Yuke and Euro are very good lakorn actors who haven't gotten much popularity with their lakorn works (whether it's due to mid/average scripts or lakorn inaccesibility); so personally I'm just really delighted that they're gaining the recognition they deserved through a series like Shine.
