15 September is International Red Panda Day where we celebrate one of the cutest animals on Earth. Even though they are incredibly cute, there is a lot more to Red Pandas than their appearance.
Here are five facts that you may not have known about Red Pandas:
First named in a presentation to the Linnean Society in 1821 by Major General Thomas Hardwicke, who went on to collect more specimens before publishing his findings. But when Hardwicke went to publish his research in 1827, he discovered that French scientist Frédéric Cuvier had beat him to it!
Red pandas are named for their reddish-brown fur and are also known as lesser pandas, red bear-cats, or firefox.
The red panda is the only living representative of its subfamily classification ‘Ailurinae’ and their nearest fossil ancestors, Parailurus, lived three to four million years ago.
Red pandas can use the underside of their tongue to test odours. The cone-like structure on the bottom of their tongue collects liquid and brings it close to a gland inside its mouth that can detect smell.
They are currently listed as an endangered, and so are at a high risk of extinction in the wild.
