Sexism in Ultimate
I am a woman and I play ultimate. I firmly believe it is one of the most equality based sport out there. But that doesn’t prevent our culturally-accrued sexism from leaking through on the ultimate field. You can see it in mixed teams. Many woman handlers are better than their male teammates, but are continually chosen last to be the handler, or only as a back up. Women cutters are looked off because they are expected to drop or throw away the disc.
Sexism bleeds into the leadership of ultimate as well. As a female captain, I often feel as though it is necessary for a male to back my opinion so the whole team respects my decision. Though I do often enjoy feedback, I often have less experienced males giving me advice on how to run my team. I’ve tried to defend a call my teammate has made, but have been scolded and told I’m overreacting (when my woman clearly looks hurt and intimidated).
Now, these personal stories might be the result of my shy personality. But I think it says something when the main responsibility of most women captains (in a coed league) is to send the weekly email. Even my boyfriend (who is firmly against femi-nazism) admitted that there is sexism within these contexts.
I also want to say that the men I play with are generally not sexist. If you know I call you a friend or draft you for my team often, you are not a sexist asshole. I just wanted to call to attention the remaining sexism within our community.

There are times where I wish people would understand that Ultimate frisbee is more than just running around catching and throwing a flying disc, but that it’s a culture, a lifestyle. The love/hate relationship, the camaraderie throughout the sport, tournament parties, and simply the little things such as dry socks, tournament food, and the extra hour of sleep from when your team has a bye make ultimate such a joy to be a part of. No words can ever express the experience of playing. At the end of the weekend, after hours upon hours and game after game of playing, after throwing your body countless times to the ground to catch a disc, after playing through rain and wind, after playing anywhere from freezing cold to three digit degree weather, after pain and soreness, all you can do is smile. When Monday rolls around and people ask you what you did, all you can answer with is I played in a frisbee tournament because they won’t understand what we actually did that weekend.

Longing For
There are days where nights are longer, colder, lonelier without you around. These are those days.
Since you’ve left, I’ve been aching to have you back in my arms again...to wrap around a blanket of safety.
I’ve been yearning for your physical presence.
I’ve been craving for your company most especially at times when I cannot seem to understand life as it is and it’s magical uncertainties.
And I believe you’re the same, as you said.
Your warm embrace, your tight hugs, your way of soothing me when I’m having a nightmare are all missed…a sample set from a myriad of your subtle ways to welcome me in all my entirety - body and soul, goodness and the lack of.
The best parts of any given day.
I constantly assure myself that we have less than two weeks before we meet again. Until then, I’ll continue to long for you.

The desire to understand the world and the desire to reform it are the two great engines of progress without which human society would stand still or retrogress.

Dee Dee looks chill here. The radar ears, raised fur and locked-on eyes denote a relaxed demeanor, right?

Note to my ex.
Today my professor told me every cell in our entire body is destroyed and replaced every seven years. How comforting it is to know that one day I will have a body that you will have never touched.
