Have been thinking about Johnny's misogyny, an aspect of his character that mostly seems ignored amongst fans, particularly when you visit clouds and the post-sex fight with alt.

Going off memory here so i might get details wrong, but johnny's open bile for evie and the dolls always has revolted me (with love) esp with what it implies with his rl with women and what it says about his beliefs. i also do think it is notable how this aspect of his character is erased within fandom interpretation and ignored by fans esp when it leans to a characterisation of his character that is just incompatible with johnny's character.

(there are male dolls in clouds and johnny is also gross towards them in a sexual way, it is a general whorephobia, but is directed largely towards evie and imo is coated in misogyny.)

When you visit jigjig, johnny mentions how unlike clouds jigjig is honest, "you know what you're getting", implying that the corpo sheen is what directs his hate, yet his disgust is exclusive for the dolls. he calls them "browshed sex zombies" and in general his attitude towards the dolls and in particular evie is one where he distrusts and looks down upon, largely for the fact they're dolls. He is particularly cruel to evie, when she kills herself he reacts with mockery and every word he says about her is vicious.

Of course part of this is johnny's general dicknessish, but it feels pointed and sharp in a way that is not even there for arasaka and corpos. that anger is based on principle (although truthfully is based on johnnys own personal feelings on himself and the effects on war. his hate is a lot more emotional than johnny likes to act,) but with evie and clouds it is inline with how we culturally and socialy treat sex workers and sexually active women. it is all that same hate the term whore was created from.

From interactions with woodman, fingers and how evie is treated and discarded it is clear how abused the dolls by clouds are. they are exploited and victims of clouds, of the capitalistic systems that control night city. evie is the perfect victim of this, she is sa'ed, tortured, picked apart by those very systems literally. but johnny comments nothing about that, he is silent.

This is complimented in the flashback with alt, more specifically the option for johnny to violent grab her, removing her control, forcing her to stay and deal with his aggression towards her. johnny the engram likes to treat their rl with rose tints, but even in his subjective untrustworthy memory, he keeps that in. keeps in that readiness to be physical. He has no respect for no one in general, but i think it manifests with his sexual partners, with women, in an insidious way.

misogyny, whorephobia, is a key part of these systems he hates but he is quick to take part in it. he is a hypocrite in that regard and it exposes how anger fueled, how personal his politics is and how little it is about their abuse but about his pain.

he will treat alt as something special after he kills her, but in life he treats her so vile, so physically.

to go onto a more meta i guess point and talking about the game itself, i also think 2077 fails with how it fails to utilise johnny's misogyny and just in general fails with its inclusion.

the narrative uses misogynistic abuse and control but doesn't give room in its politics for real understanding and taking down of those systems. it will happily use misogynistic and sexual exploitation and display it but never' goes further.

you see it with those drinks ads plastered all over night city that uses the language of transfeminine fetishisation but actually does little actual trans-feminist politics and itself happily take part in that exploitation.

i love johnny's whorephobia and misogyny as characterisation and does a lot for his character but 2077 refuses to really explore it imo. it is quick to use it for flavour and discards it as quickly.

and to go to the point of how this is ignored in fandom. i think the erasure of his misogyny is such a shame but also shows a lack of understanding of johnny. i think for a lot of people it is hard to admit that a character they like is a terrible person, which is why often people will erase and ignore those aspects, but to do so is a disservice to his character imo.

i wish this aspect of johnny was considered and discussed more, in appreciation of him, as analysis but also in the fan art and writing made about him.

i don't know how johnny would react to you being infertile honestly. like 1) that's probably a rare occurrence in the dark future anyway and 2) he'd just stare blankly at you like damn. that sucks for you. or congrats i guess?
