I love this stupid movie I feel like Miyazaki was constantly trying to find the appropriate ratio of braindead misogynist tropes and Badass Women(TM) to break even. Porco is a sexist pig, but wait, every single woman in Theo’s family helped fix Porco’s plane so he learns his lesson. Theo is a brilliant engineer and practically every male character voices their respect to her (except the one Bad Man) but the final contest’s stakes is still literally just her hand in marriage like she’s a trophy. Oh, but it was her idea in the first place… they sit her alongside Porco’s debt basically equating her worth to a bag of cash, buuuut she’s actually exhibiting her own agency in a weird way…. What a dumb movie. I think what sells it for me is the way the fight ends, with the seasoned male pilots clobbering each other like the three stooges. It’s so silly. I don’t know much about feminism, but I can tell this movie does not take men or itself seriously, at the very least.

Haruhi fujioka really is the character ever. Going by any pronouns in 2006. Big beautiful brown eyes like a baby cow. Constant deadpan delivery. Getting bitches constantly. Reacts to romantic advances with a thousand-yard goldfish stare. Perfect flawless protagonist 10/10

Ginko is a man who will show you compassion whether you are a fisherman, a scholar, a waitress, whether you’re deaf-blind, catatonic, or you can kill someone by whistling. Even if you’ve lost everything that you’ve convinced yourself makes you worth anything at all in this world, this man will treat you with the same level of respect as anyone else.

Mushi-shi's plant-like women
As I'm rewatching Mushi-shi, I've come to "Floral Delusion," which, I'm realizing, is the second episode featuring a woman being kept alive artificially by a mushi due to wills of her family. In "One Night Bridge," it was due to the politics of an arranged marriage, but this one is simply about a woman unable to see, hear, smell, touch, or taste, still being bound to this world because others find her beautiful.
The familiar symbol of cherry blossoms helps communicate what I think is the point of this episode. While "One Night Bridge" tried to show that a plant-like woman deserves to have her personhood respected no matter what, I feel like this episode was more about the natural order of life and death.
I know Mushi-shi can go to some pretty dark body-horror places, even in "cozy" episodes, but I feel like this episode has some of the most classic horrific imagery. The twist is almost like something from an old slasher movie. I think it's interesting those horror tropes were included in this episode in particular. With that and the cherry blossom metaphor in mind, the message I get is this:
It is an abomination to try to preserve something just because it's beautiful when it is only natural to wither and fade. All beauty in the world is a part of this cycle of life and death.

Thinking about the Mirror Lake episode...
So many of us struggle with these one-sided romantic attachments to others. We think we've fallen in love, but it's really just a way of coping with our low self-esteem. This episode shows the kind of situation that can put things in perspective for the troubled person.
Also, isn't it so charming that Ginko gives the same compassion to the Mizukagami that he gave to the girl? Oh no...

♂: It's dirty again already? ♀: I don't ever polish it, because I want you to. ♂: I've been thinking, Masumi ♀: Hm? ♂: These days, there just aren't that many people who need their mirrors polished around here. I've been thinking of looking for work elsewhere. ♀: Huh? But then when would I get to see you next? ♂: Who knows? I don't know when I'll be back. ♀: I don't want that! ♂: It's not like I want this either but I've got to provide for myself somehow, you know? Please try to understand. ♀: Then, I'll wait for you in your new village! I'll become your bride! ♂: I don't want to settle down yet. ♀: Then, I'll wait until you do want to! Please! ♂: Sorry, but I don't want a tomboy like you for a wife. I'd prefer someone who's got a gentler disposition. That's how it is. So I can't say when I'll come see you again. Anyway, the next time the mirror gets dirty, I'm sorry, but just polish it yourself.

I just realized Ginko is Snufkin-coded.
He's a chill guy.
He always seems know the right thing to say.
He spends a lot of time traveling.
... uhh. nature? This list seemed longer in my head.
