Yuri Plisetsky’s Age (As of 2017)
Many members of the Yuri on Ice community on tumblr would have noticed all the birthday wishes to Yuri Plisetsky on March 1.
However, the ones who made it his 16th bithday in art/fics/etc. would have been inaccurate.
In this (incredibly useless) analysis, I’ll explain why. This is just based on prior knowledge and Grand Prix locations and years.
To anyone unfamiliar with Yuri on Ice, Yuri on Ice is a figure skating based sports anime released in 2016.
Now, I see where people would have assumed that March 1, 2017 was Yuri Plisetsky’s 16th birthday. The show, as i said, released in 2016 depicts Yuri Plisetsky as a 15 year old up and coming advanced skater from Russia. (With the exception of the first scene we meet the Russian Punk which takes place roughly a year before the rest of the show, making Yuri 14 at the time.)
The series mainly follows Yuuri Katsuki, a not-so-fantastic figure skater from Japan, and how his life changes when his new coach Viktor Nikiforov (an incredibly decorated figure skater from Russia who has a multitude of records and gold medals)
So what does any of this have to do with Yuri’s age?
Nothing really. However, Viktor is important in this.
Cosplayers of the silver haired Russian who own his red and white russia jacket know it says Olympic Team on the back.
Therefore meaning Viktor has been in the Olympics at least once.
Again, not exactly related to Yuri’s age. However, in 2014 the Winter Olympics were held.
Then there’s the timing of when the show was released.
The figure skating season is the period of time in which competitions are contested in the sport of figure skating. The skating season begins on July 1 of one year and goes until the end of June of the next. The seasons are referred to by the years they span. For example, the 2006/2007 season began in July 2006 and ended in June 2007 which lasts 11 months every year.
The show itself took place int the 2015/16 or 2014/15 season. Not the more recent, current season.
In December 2014 & 2015, the Grand Prix Finals were held in Barcelona, Spain.
The 2016 Grand Prix Finals, however, took place in Marseilles, France.
Based on the proposal at the Barcelona Grand Prix, Yuri on Ice gives indication at when the season took off.
I personally think it takes place in the 2015/16 season. There is more evidence in the favor of that season than of 2014/15.
But also, let’s look at who Yuri Plisetsky is based off of. Russian figure skater Yulia Lipnitskaya.
At 14/15, Yulia was practically the face of Russian figure skating. She had much promise and became the youngest Olympic figure skater to win gold.
Yuri Plisetsky’s talents and placings give indication how much alike he is to that of Yulia Lipnitskaya, of which Yuri was based off of.
Which would put Yuri’s exact birthdate to March 1, 2000 (or March 1, 1999)
Therefore, as of 2017, Yuri Plisetsky would be seventeen (or eighteen) years old this year.
So, there’s my analysis. What are your thoughts? Agree? Disagree? Have more evidence to support or refute? Let me know! Reblogs and Likes are greatly appreciated.
