Well coming back online from the movies to find out Lukas retired due to essentially a terminal diagnosis was definitely not what I was expecting today.

Someone: If I don't see anything that meets my narrow definition of what constitutes fan service, then there must be fan service.
Me: -who didn't get to even finish SOTR before Libby returned it because IRL stuff got in the way but saw a whole bunch of stuff that fans were clamoring for- That's not how that works.

Probably one of the biggest earliest ironies of The Last Olympian. Is by Chiron not ever clarifying the 'Shall Reach 16' thing to Percy. Is that inavertidely got Percy doing the one thing Percy probably wouldn't have done under normal circumstances. Accidentally. Because he didn't have all the correct information.
Which was trying to change the prophecy.
Cause first he tries to engage Kronos first thinking he can beat Luke because he does not understand that it's not a matter of he needs to beat Kronos around 16. No he has to be 16.
And then there's the thing in Atlantis where he thinks he can make the decision to stay there to help his Dad also at the time. Which if he had stayed down there long enough would have eventually qualified actually.
But still didn't fully work at the time again because he wasn't actually 16.
But again he was accidentally engaging in a Greek Mythos No-No. When he usually doesn't. Because Chiron despite knowing about the Andromeda plan didn't think to maybe give a carefully worded warning to avoid Kronos and it not being time yet.

Also the mortal point thing in the book is the case of (as much as I love Rick) of wanting something without having put enough of the the work in. Because at that point Percabeth was nowhere ready for that kind of thing.
Literally the last thing Annabeth says to him before he bathes in the styx is that infamous 'You're a coward, Percy Jackson' comment. And as wild as that is and out of nowhere as it is. You can see there are other issues with their relationship in the book. And they haven't really reached a point of having a good working friendship/romance yet.
Let alone to the point where that kind of argument feels like an outlier.
So it feels like the mortal point moment doesn't feel earned. It feels weird. Like it makes sense after their romance is more established of course. But...that's not something that should be happening when you don't have a good established relationship.
Especially after that infamous comment.
You need to build the framework into it. Not retcon it.
Really hoping Rick fixes it for the show if we hopefully get to The Last Olympian because boy does it need fixing.

(Before I get into this I don’t hate Annabeth. I am just really frustrated with her at the moment with her actions in The Last Olympian.)
Not me realizing that Nico shows more emotional maturity in helping Percy with his grief around Beckendorfs death than Annabeth.
Like it’s not said that he seeks outs Beckendorf on purpose after he dies. But you can probably infer it. And he makes a point of passing on the message from Beckendorf to Percy that he doesn’t blame him for what happened on the Andromeda
Meanwhile Annabeth who threw the weirdest ADHD snowball I have seen as an ADHD person myself. After Percy tried asking her for advice on what Rachel saw. Accused him of being a coward for no reason other than some weird thing than maybe relating back to Rachel since they weren’t even talking about the prophecy at the time
(Because yeah people forget they weren’t talking about the prophecy then. They were talking about Rachel. The coward comment came out of left field with no warning.)
And when we get to funeral scene. She’s still so caught up in this weird ass mentality. She can’t stop to think that her friend of four years might need some comfort from her after everything he’s been through. And instead spends the entire scene ignoring him.
Tumblr media
Like I get that Nico was forced to grow up fast after Bianca’s death. But so was Annabeth in her own ways. And yet somehow the 12 year old is showing more emotional maturity of the two of them.
And I guess you could argue this maybe ties back to Nico being a Hades kid. But arguably shouldn’t need that connection to have some emotional maturity.

Also it really should be talked about more the fact that Chiron's decision to 'protect' Percy. By not telling him the extremely important detail that he can't make the important decision that will lead to Kronos' defeat until he is 16.
Is what leads to Percy getting in a situation that leads to him nearly getting killed. And yeah sure Nico's next in line for the prophecy. But lets be real four years of war would have screwed over the pantheon. Especially with Typhon on the loose.
(which by the way for the boy, girls, and everyone else in between who forgot like I did. Typhon was already on the loose when the Andromeda shit went down.)
Chiron nearly screws over the entire pantheon. Despite knowing about the mission. Despite knowing what they were doing. Despite knowing full well there was a non zero chance Percy could end up in a fight with Luke.
Like he may not have known the exact timing. But he knew the mission would have to go off before Percy was 16. If for no other reason than to tackle it before Typhon gets to NYC. Simple math.
And never once stops to think Hey maybe I should mention to avoid Luke,Kronos because he can't be defeated right now do to the prophecy's wording.
Maybe not say the actual words since the Gods aren't allowing it. But you can get around it by getting creative Chiron.
And like idk if Bechendorf would have survived since the spying was still going on. But at least his odds would have increased. And overall Percy wouldn't have come that close to dying from having his soul nearly reaped from engaging in a fight that you are partly responsible for.
For again not adequetly warning him for.
What the actual fuck Chiron.

Also I never thought about this but how pissed was Belos about the fact he was stuck using a term that historically had ties to Greek mythology? A paganism religion that you know he had to hate?
Like there is absolutely no way he didn’t try to get them to drop the title of Titan at some point. And absolutely spectacularly failed at it.

Rereading The Last Olympian is retesting my patience with Chiron in a way that hasn't been done since The Lightning Thief. Like I thought I had worked out my issues with Chiron after that book.
And here we are again.

-me rereading Last Olympian for the first time in 16 years-
Oh I forgot Percy tried to argue that the prophecy decision could be him trying to fight for Atlantis. Like I remembered that he wanted to try and help Atlantis. I forgot he had made that argument about the decision.
And like the timing is wrong. He would have to like a week. But like it could have been argued that could be it.
Just not in the way he realizes.
Oh this is so fascinating.

-me randomly editing a PJO fanfic realizing that Dio telling Ariadne's story was foreshadowing us finding out about the whole Zoe and Heracles mess later on in the same book-
Sometimes I'm slow to realizing stuff.

Going back through old posts and seeing posts reminding me of a time people literally tried to make an argument that Dana was somehow a Rowling Lite is hilarious. Considering just how progressively worse Rowling has gotten as a person has gotten.
Like Dana’s not perfect don’t get me wrong.
But to say she is anything like Rowling is an insult. Especially considering that fundraiser she did for the Trevor Project

That moment when someone with an lgbt partner says we shouldn’t tell kids about this kind of stuff.
Tumblr media
Honey considering who your partner is you should be in support of education. Kids are not dumb. They notice stuff.
- from someone who legitimately knew a kid with body dismorphia though I didn’t know the term at the time. I didn’t find out he transitioned until a decade later. But wasn’t shocked when I found out because all the signs were there when I knew him. Because hey kids notice things!!!!

Thoughts on the Preakness Skip and Whether We missed a TC (which ultimately I think No)
Having more time to digest it. And the reality that it seems Sovereignty seems to be one of those rare cases of a horse actually loving the classic distance. Because as much as we don't want to address the elephant in the room half of the time the colts/older male division is really at its best just short of the full classic distance.
I'm not so sure if he had run in the Preakness he would have won. And it comes down to the top two and Sovereignty himself really.
Like I said Soveriengty himself seems to be a proper 10 furlonger. And that doesn't mean he can't get shorter than 10 furlonger. He won the Fountain of Youth. But he has lost at 9 furlongs before (see the Florida Derby). Which does suggest he is just better going a bit longer.
On top of that the top two ran arguably freakish level performances for both of them. Gosner turned in the race of his career for second. Journalism well we all know what happened there. Sovereignty would have to overcome a distance disadvantage over two colts running top notch performances. One of whom I think does prefer the 9 furlong distance (Journalism).
And I just don't think as good of a horse as he is it would have been possible.
I'll be curious to see if Mott and McCarthy point the two of them to the Haskell. Since this will probably give us a chance at a more definitive answer to this question. Since any time they meet at 10, Sovereignty will have the edge.
Especailly in the Travers where he's now already won at 10 furlongs over the same track.

Yeah I was just saying he seems to be a proper 10 furlong horse. In a way you don’t get to see that often it feels. Like a lot of horses run it but really are better somewhere between 9 to 9.5. But he seems to actually relish the full 10.
I almost wish we had a proper 12 furlong Belmont because part of me has to wonder if he would have gotten the stretch out. Because you know under normal circumstances they won’t try him at a marathon distance.
Wooo, Sovereignty!!!!
Well, I think Sovereignty has confirmed that he's the cream of the crop. Journalism ran well in defeat, in a lot of ways he continues to emulate Curlin, but Sovereignty is so good at the mile and a quarter.

That is a horse that loves a mile and a quarter in a way I can’t remember seeing in a while. Travers and BCC are obvious choices for starts but curious to see what the rest of the season will be like for the rest of his season.
