Why The Daniel Jones-New York Giants Marriage Ended
Typically, when a player and team part ways in-season, the way the New York Giants and Daniel Jones have separated with Jones’ release on Friday, there are bad feelings on at least one, and usually both sides.
But make no mistake: there aren’t any aspects of this separation that come from the Giants doubting Jones’ effort to be the quarterback they hoped they’d selected to succeed Eli Manning with the sixth pick in the 2019 draft, then signed to a four-year, $160 million extension following the 2022 season. This is almost purely about the money. And any other part of that decision comes from a mutual respect between the parties.

“Daniel came to see me this morning and asked if we would release him,” Giants president John Mara said this morning. “We mutually agreed that would be best for him and for the team. Daniel has been a great representative of our organization, first class in every way. His handling of this situation yesterday exemplifies just that. We are all disappointed in how things have worked out. We hold Daniel in high regard and have a great appreciation for him. We wish him nothing but the best in the future.”
Daniel Jones Was Demoted This Week
The situation Mara referred to was New York, after demoting Jones to third-string quarterback, signing Tim Boyle and leaving open the possibility it would be Boyle and not Jones as the emergency quarterback this Sunday at 1 PM ET against Tampa Bay.
Jones did not take any QB reps at Thursday’s practice. True to form, he did whatever the coaching staff asked of him — the fact that his contract included a salary guarantee of $23 million should he be unable to pass a physical next spring. A freak injury with that kind of price tag isn’t something any franchise should risk.
“Daniel’s been a pro, I've said that before,” Giants head coach Brian Daboll said to reporters on Thursday. “It's not the easiest situation, I understand that, but came in, good in the meetings, good attitude, be out here at practice.”

Daniel Jones’ Final Days
So it was for Jones’ last day, one in which his teammates made it clear they don’t believe the Giants will be better with a different quarterback, but one in which everyone, Jones included, realized that once New York made the decision that the team’s future didn’t include Jones, that future should begin immediately, both to protect the Giants and give Jones a chance to catch on somewhere down the stretch of the 2024 season.
“I wanted to play,” Jones told reporters on Thursday. “I want to play. I want to be on the field. I tried to do as much as I could to make that possible and create a situation where we were both comfortable. Most of those discussions went on with my agent and with [Giants general manager] Joe [Schoen]. I want to play. I want to be on the field. But it's the unfortunate business side of the game, too... Well, I’ve got the injury guarantee. So, that's that. I understand it. they don't want to take any risks. At that point, it's just do as you're told.”
Still, ahead of Friday’s announcement, Jones read a prepared statement to the media, taking full responsibility for the on-field failures the Giants experienced during his tenure — which, as much as he didn’t overcome his circumstances, often came in positions he was simply set up to fail.
“I wrote something down just to make sure I say it the right way. The opportunity to play for the New York Giants was truly a dream come true and I'm extremely grateful to the Mara and Tisch families for the chance to play here. The Giants are truly a first-class organization, and I have nothing but genuine respect and appreciation for the people who have built it and who helped carry on that tradition. I've met so many special people and created relationships that will truly last a lifetime. Thank you to all my teammates, coaches and staff that have done so much for me these past six years. There have been some great times but, of course, we all wish there had been more of those. I take full responsibility for my part in not bringing more wins. No one wanted to win more games worse than me, and I gave everything I had on the field and in my preparation.
“Of course, this season has been disappointing for all and, of course, I wish I could have done more,” Jones continued. “I'm 100% accountable for my part. I did not play well enough, consistently enough to help the team get the results. The reality of the NFL is it's hard to win games and it requires consistent performance from everyone involved. We didn't do that well enough. So, the idea to change something happens and I understand. I love the game. I love being part of a team. I'm excited for the next opportunity. I know that there's a lot of good football in front of me and I'm excited about that. To all the fans, I have deep respect and appreciation for your passion and love for the Giants. The fans are a huge part of what makes playing for the Giants so special.”
