The Amako Clan, sometimes called Amago clan, descended from the Emperor Uda (868–897) by the Sasaki clan (Uda Genji).

Sasaki Takahisa in the 14th century, having lost his parents at the age of three years, he was brought up by a nun (ama in Japanese). He was the first to take the name of Amago (nun’s son) in her memory. He took Tomita castle in Izumo province for the Kyôgoku shugo and his descendants were powerful in Izumo from the 14th Century until today.

Daimyo Haruhisa (the current Daimyo) assumed control of the clan from Amako Tsunehisa when he retired in 1537 during a prolonged conflict with the Mori Clan (a one-time ally). These fights would rage back and forth for the next 5 years.

In 1541, an extended campaign into Motonari lands in an attempt to gain control of the province of Aki ended with a defeat by the soon to form Sue Clan supported by Ouchi clan relief forces.

In the wake of the battle of Yoshida-Koriyama Castle, the Amako retainers, noting the army’s dwindling supplies and poor morale, elected to withdraw their battered army out of Aki. The Môri and Ôuchi duly pursued but were hindered by snow.

Now 10 years later, with Ouchi Yoshitaka’s death and the rise of Sue Harukata the Amako clan has just regained control of its original lands. They survey their position from their headquarters at Gassan-Toda castle. After so many years of reverses and failures will this be the turnaround in the fortune of the Amako Clan?
