Antagonist Thesis Sentence
You are violent. And don’t tell me that you aren’t. So you didn’t get in a fist fight with anybody? What about the bug that splattered all over your windshield on the way over here? What about the organisms that died when you chugged that glass of unfiltered water? Are those lives, those souls, more important than your own?
Says who?

Some Insights
When I explain Ahimsa to people in America who are not familiar with Jainism, they find it to be incredibly extreme. I get many eye rolls when I tell people the lengths to which Jain people go to avoid harming any living being. On the contrary, talking to Jain people who practice Ahimsa every day find it very difficult to express their thoughts regarding nonviolence, because it is so engrained in their everyday life.
Showering before Puja vs wasting water and killing bacteria - People need to rationalize behavior bc it’s ingrained in their identities
The shoes take on different meanings for different audiences in India people see them as solutions because they are practicing ahimsa every day in Los Angeles, people see them as conversation tools bc they are generally unfamiliar with the concept
Shoes - Most Effective

At 3:00 am we began the long trek up the mountain. My niece, Swati, wasn’t feeling well so she hired a dholi to carry her and our things up the mountain.

For four hours, we walked up and down multiple mountains in the dark, stopping at small shops on the way for some bottled water, masala lemonade, and biscuits. It was cold, and most pilgrims were barefoot, although some were wearing socks, and others were wearing sandals.

We reached the top of the mountain around 6 am, right in time to see the beautiful sunset peak over the mountain top. It was a serene moment after the long trek.

Once at the top, there were many temples you could visit. There were also 24 stupas to represent each of the 24 Tirthankaras.

The Parasnath temple was the main attraction.

I interviewed Mamta Jain from Nagpur at the Jal Mandir. She said that she practices Ahimsa every day by not killing a single germ or bacteria. She filters water through a cloth and then boils it.
