Project #4 - Performance Art

Artist Statement:

For my final project I wanted to base it on the themes of Identity and Failure. For this project those two themes go hand in hand. I wanted to show how we, myself included, tend to try and change things about ourselves to fit into a stereotypical form. We get plastic surgery, dye our hair, wear colored contacts, tan our bodies, etc. By doing this we begin to chip away at ourselves and our identity until there is nothing left of our original self to see. All the different layers you see added onto my face are traits and things that I have wanted over the years, some because I think they look more attractive and some just because I wanted to change it up. But the more you see things added my actual appearance beings to disappear, until there is nothing but a small sliver. This is end goal if I continue down my chosen path, and it has made me rethink things.

Theme: Failure

Technique: Live Art

For my final project i chose to put on a live ambient performance alongside Colfax in the middle of a Monday. I took a 5 second music sample from a meditation cassette and made a tape loop out of it. Then i rigged the tape player up to an app on my ipad and connected a portable speaker to it. The idea was to share a contrasting view of the calming meditation music and the buzzing traffic of angry colfax drivers. Obviously its completely drowned out by the traffic and all around noises and electromagnetic signals in the area and fails to calm anybody down. I sold my car 6 months ago and have been commuting via bicycle or skateboard for everything and its a much more relaxed and energizing experience than ive ever had driving my car down the busy (and getting busier) streets. When youre walking down the sidewalk you have time to stop and experience things. The loop snapped, or got twised or something during the performance and caused silence and electrical buzzing. Which i guess adds to the performance because everyone was moving so fast, they had no way knowing. And ambient music being so ambiguous as it is, i could have just kept that to myself. If i were to try this differently i would have liked to have more performers and some real musicians there to give a "sidewalk set" to anyone passing by slow enough to hear it.

The Feeding

For the final project I was inspired by Yoko Ono’s the cut. While I didn’t let people cut my clothing off I did have people feed me. Being feed put me a vulnerable position I couldn’t control how they fed me or how much.

I work at Casa Bonita, so I decided to walk around and ask my co workers to feed me sopapillas. And take a picture because it took longer than a minute to find people to feed me.

Thoughts and Reasoning:

Eating is something everyone struggles with. It could be eating too much, not enough, healthy or unhealthy. In our society a lot of pressure is put on food aka body image. To give away that power and to feel some vulnerability I say some becausei do know all the people I asked to feel extreme vulnerability I would have had to ask people I don’t know and well this was my place of work so I didn’t do that.

After living in China for two years and having my physical appearance, specifically my weight talked about and scrutinized almost daliy I have become more aware of the struggle. (I am a 135lb 5 ft 6in tall person...I think perfectly average)

What I did:

To push back at societies that think I’m too big or too small because in America I am often told I’m small and should eat more. I decided to give the power away and see what people would do.

I filled one basket with fresh sopapillas and I had another that was empty. I walked around Casa Bonita and every coworker I came across I asked to feed me or not it was up to them.

What others did:

Some feed me the entire sopapilla, some only gave me a bite, the most interesting was the ones who wanted me to spit it out after I took the bite. Some agreed to take a picture during but quite a few said they would feed me but wouldn’t take a picture with me. Making me feel a little ashamed, like it was a secret to eat. Harkening backs to eating and body image is a serious concern.

In the end:

I definitely tried to lighten the heavy body image mood with taking silly photos while eating the sopapillas.

If I could do something different:

I would have like to sit in one place and had people approach me to feed me, and have more people intentionally watching others feed me rather than whoever happened to be around as the audience.

The Artist is Present

To be honest before I watched this movie I didn’t have a very high opinion on performance art. All of the art that I have seen has been in small theaters performed by students and or people who I didn’t know and didn’t read what their performances were about.

After watching the artist is present I’ve come to realize that a lot of thoughts and planning go into even the smallest of preformances. A lot of people hate on performance art, this is something she talks about during the film. She had such strong feelings and was searching to find a way to share. She had a rough artistic beginning, but I am happy to see it all work out. For me it would be hard to keep going after having been through some of the things she went through.

I really do like all of her performances. I wish I could have seen any of them in real life. I don’t think any of it is diminished because it was filmed. But I do think it would have a certain kind of power in real life because you have to be there and experienced it using all of your senses, rather than simply looking and hearing what the movie producers want you to see.

Project #3: 

I took this video while I was driving to babysit at 4:45 in the morning. It honestly is very relaxing to me to watch all the cars drive by and have the music in the background. Without the music, I do not think it is as beautiful with just the video. Together the music and the video create a peaceful aesthetic that is very calming.

At first I didn’t like the transitions but by the end I think they add an unexpected sense of anticipation to the video

Project 3

Artist Statement: “Vanishing and Becoming, my dinner”

For this project I wanted to take the idea of “Vanishing and Becoming” quite literally through the life of my tomato plant harvest, as well as some associated chaos that can come along with transforming something into something else. My videos are all original because I wanted this to be a personal project from the perspective of the artist. My audio is all royalty free use sound effects compiled through Adobe Premiere. I’m inspired by the chaotic nature of DADA art, as well as mainstream ASMR videos. I kept my lighting according to my environment, with some adjustments to the saturation and highlights to emphasize the natural shadows of both environments. I have distorted the audio slightly for a more “natural” and chaotic effect.

For project #3 I did bang bang I shot you down as the song with a recording of a dandelion gone to seed. Both of these things for me have a permanence because they are recorded now so therefor they are now forever, while also having this sense of ending. The song is about being shot down and being gone, and dandelions go to seed at the end of their life cycle and get blown away. They have a delicate existence.

I chose an extremely limited color palette with a “western” filter on it. I wanted it to be bright and dull at the same time. When the colors were vibrant and super saturated it was too happy for my theam of fragility, ending, and eclipsing.

The sun also plays a big role in this project for me because I couldn’t look at it while I recorded it but my goal was to have the dandelion; something so fragile and small eclipse the sun; something so big and powerful. To block it out without any harm to my eyes is also a powerful thought. This really harkens back to our reading in the way that video is a reflection of life and let’s us see and do things now that wouldn’t be possible with other media’s.

Project #2 - Fashionable Fails

Artist Statement:

For this project I wanted to show the not so glamorous part of fashion and modeling. This is to be in stark contrast to my first project, “Desert Fashion,” which was used to highlight the beauty and glamour of fashion, this shows the mistakes and the mishaps of the clothing and the industry.
