Celebrate your liberty!
- Freedom: Cherish it, celebrate it and pass it on. Freedom is not self-evident. -
75 years of liberation...what else had we imagined for Liberation Day 2020. There were so many fun activities and events organized, which unfortunately all had to be cancelled because of the Corona measures. Understandable of course...but such a pity. But still celebrate that you live in freedom! That we live in a country without war! No matter how trapped we may feel in this Corona time, we are free!  We can go out, make it cosy at home, eat whatever we want and so on!
But, first of all what's Liberation Day?
Liberation Day is more than just the festivals. On 5 May we celebrate that we live in freedom in the Netherlands. We celebrate that in 1945 we were liberated from the German occupation in the Netherlands, but also the Japanese occupation in the Dutch East Indies.
Since that day we have been free from war and oppression in the Netherlands. But 5 May is now also the day to think about the importance of freedom and to realize that freedom is vulnerable. Many have fought for freedom in the Netherlands and have even given their lives. It is good to keep remembering that.
Before Liberation Day, 4 May is Remembrance Day, when the Netherlands commemorates all victims of wars and fighters for freedom, democracy and human rights.
More and more people know the war and the above-mentioned history only from stories. The people who have consciously experienced the war were children in those days.  I think it's important that this tradition continues. Personally, I always enjoy going to a liberation festival. I have experienced this well in previous years. It's a nice day, there's a nice atmosphere, you feel free and respect the people around you. That's why it's important that we continue to pass on the stories to each other, and that everyone celebrates freedom in their own way.
But, what are we going to do now on May 5, 2020? On this national day most people will be free. How do you celebrate Liberation Day at home? I have a few tips for you to still be aware of this day.
Make it  day without rules! Make the rules more flexible at home. For example, read off the screen time, don't eat at the table but at a place in the house whatever you want.
Take a walk. Celebrate that you can enjoy nature!
Celebrate your own Liberation Festival! Make your own festival with your family. Make a stage and do an act. Perform as an artist. Singer, magician or illusionist. Put on music, dance in your living room or garden! Create a bar where you can buy drinks and food. You pay with coins, of course. And so you can let your imagination run wild. What do you miss about a liberation festival? Create it in your own home! Celebrate freedom!
Make your own Escape Room. And literally experience what it feels like to be liberated! You can create your own assignments and riddles that the others in the family have to solve within a certain time.  Use 1 space in the house from which they have to escape within a certain time. Make it extra exciting with a ticking alarm clock and music!  Or you can do an online Escape Room.
Happy liberation day and have fun!

Pretty in Orange all over the world
Is King's day more than an orange party?
For many people, King's Day is a good excuse to release all the brakes.  Going crazy, drinking just a little too much, getting dressed and for one day forgetting all the worries. If you look beyond this, King's Day in many countries brings more than just a national day.
On King's Day the Dutch people celebrate the birthday of the head of state. King Willem Alexander's birthday is on 27 April and so that day is dominated by feasts, free markets and of course the King himself.
A day full of traditions. But how are the birthdays of heads of state in other countries celebrated?  Here are three countries in a row that celebrate the national holiday in their own way.
Twice party – United Kingdom
Celebrating your birthday once isn't enough? Then you just celebrate it twice. Something Queen Elizabeth II completely agrees with. The head of state recently celebrated her 91st birthday, but that was a modest celebration in private.  But the big party is always held in June. Then Her Majesty appears on the balcony in front of her people and the famous Trooping the Colour Parade is held.
Imperial Gates - Japan
Japan is the only country in the world with a reigning emperor as head of state. Since 1989 Emperor Akihito is the 125th emperor of Japan and his birthday is celebrated every year on December 23rd. On this day, the doors of the Imperial Palace open to the citizens, which is exceptional, as the palace is closed to the public for the rest of the year.
Corps meal - Belgium
King's Day in Belgium is celebrated every year on 15 November. For Defence in particular, Belgian King's Day is a large celebration in which the traditional corps meal is central. All officers, non-commissioned officers and volunteers come together to toast the King. Traditionally, the royal couple does not attend any of the festivities.
King's Day is off this year because of the coronavirus. Because of the virus, events have been cancelled in the short term, and are in danger in the long term. So, stay safe and use my tips and tricks to still have a nice day.
1.     Be pretty in orange
Pretend it's a normal King’s day. Dress orange, smack orange and buy orange cakes! So you'll still have the idea of a normal King’s day...
2.     Have a corona-proof party at home over the radio.
Radio 538 goes online with a bold line-up of national and international artists. Follow this in your own house, garden or balcony and party together (max 3 people of course)
3.     Stay safe!
Stay home, don't be stubborn to go out and watch your health!
Happy King’s day already!

Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Quiet Saturday
“There would be no christmas  if there was no ….”- Gordon B. Hinckley.
Of course, I’m talking about Easter. Did you all fill in the correct answer on the dotted line? Or were you doubting.
Easter is just around the corner, a long weekend to look forward to every year. Good food, nice weather, nice activities and... even more food! That's what people think about the word Easter the most! But besides Peter Cottontail and his colorful eggs, how much do you really know about it?Sure, everyone's heard the basics about this major Christian holiday. But when it comes down to how we celebrate these days in a modern sense — like how a giant rabbit, a lot of Easter brunch and lunch and Easter egg hunt— our traditions have evolved over time. I think that the general knowledge about Easter is missing in some people.
So, first a little history. Christians celebrate this day from their faith that Jesus rose from the dead, on the third day after his crucifixion.  Easter is the celebration of the life of hope, of life after death. Many non-religious elements have been added over the years. This has made it an important secular celebration.
Even though I wasn't raised a Christian, I certainly respect the tradition. I’ve always love Easter; even as a little girl, it was one of my absolute favorite holidays. And I still love it. The freshness of spring, the pastel colors (and candy!) all make me happy! I mean, what’s not cheerful about soft colors, fresh flowers, and nests and eggs?!Lovely!
Like me, a lot of people enjoy a delicious homemade Easter breakfast or Easter brunch. Together at the table with your friends or the whole family and take the time for all that goodness. Are you still looking for a nice recipe that you can make for the Easter breakfast or can you get inspiration for the Easter brunch?
With the following recipes, you can go in any direction! A fine blend of sweet and savoury and something for everyone
My best 2 recipes for you:
1.     SAVORY CAKE WITH MUSHROOMS AND SPINACH
Preheat the oven to 200 degrees. Cut the spinach, sun-dried tomatoes, mushrooms and peppers into pieces. Pour a dash of oil into a pan and fry the peppers and mushrooms. After 5 minutes, add the spinach and fry until the spinach and herbs have shrunk. Turn off the heat. Mix the eggs and the cooking cream in a cup. Divide the slices of puff pastry over a greased springform or baking dish.Prick holes in the puff pastry with a fork. Spoon the vegetables onto the puff pastry and pour the egg mixture over it. Finally a little cheese to taste and in the oven for 30 minutes!  And voila, a delicious savoury pie that you can put on the table in no time.
And of course, we can't forget dessert
2.    CARROT (PAN)CAKE(S)
The carrot pancakes look suspiciously like we say in the Netherlands: carrot cake. Even cold, these pancakes are delicious ... especially if you serve a nice creamy topping with them. Not bad for a luxury Easter breakfast or brunch, right?
Make pancake batter and bake in a suitable Easter shape such as an Easter bunny, spring flower or egg shape for the frying pan. Around this time, these forms are everywhere in the shops. Don't forget to grease the shape so that your pancake looks great.
Ready to bake the sweet carrot pancakes? Then make a tasty topping of yogurt, carrot grater and cinnamon, because just like with a carrot cake, the topping really finishes it off!
Does the water run in your mouth at the sight of all this glorious? Of course, you can try a recipe at the weekend or on a day off. This way you will be well prepared for the Easter weekend because before you know it it's time!
Happy Easter already!

First aid for Valentine's Day
Life is too short not to love. It’s the day when people show their affection for another person or people by sending cards, flowers or chocolates with messages of love. You hate it or you love it. Of course, I'm talking about Valentine's Day
I always hear things like, "Valentine's Day is just a commercial intent", "I'm not participating". That it's made commercial is obvious. But I love Valentine's Day!
I've always had a good experience with Valentine because it's a day when your friends, family and loved ones are just a little bit more in the limelight than usual. And I liked it even when I was single. Because Valentine's Day is also about loving yourself! Valentine's Day means you let them know that you love someone. That could be your father, your mother, your best friend, your great love but of course don't forget YOURSELF! I always like it when I get something extra, even if it's just a small gesture. Last Valentine's Day, I got a lot of roses and me and my boyfriend went away to Amsterdam for the day and had a nice dinner in the evening.
But how do you do that? Do something special on Valentine's Day? Read on for fun ideas for someone you love (of course, this can also be family, a friend or a colleague).
My 5 best tips for you:
1.    Surprise someone
-      If you don't know what to do with your loved one or if you're single, a surprise might be something for you. Take someone unexpectedly and do something fun together. For example, go to a musical, the movie or do a fun workshop.
2.     The power of flowers!
-      Unexpected gifts from friends or relatives are often the most fun! Surprise your love, mother or best friend with a beautiful bouquet of flowers and a sweet Valentine's card. They will appreciate your attention.
3.    Send a card
·     It's nice to let others know how much you love them! So, make a nice valentine card with a sweet valentine text for your lover, girlfriend, grandmother or your mother and let them know that you appreciate them. And do you want to make your card extra special? Send a gift with your valentine card!
4.    Love goes through the stomach
-      Go out to dinner with the people you love and make it a party! Order champagne or prosecco choose a three-course dinner and dine together all evening. Candles and roses are of course also welcome at your table!
5.    Love YOURSELF
-      Lovely, a day relaxing in a spa. And Valentine's Day is a good excuse to spoil yourself.  Book a nice massage or beauty treatment to come home completely relaxed. Of course you can also do this together with your lover or girlfriends to relax and chat.
I hope this has given you some inspiration for Valentine's Day.
Lots of love and a nice Valentine's Day ♥, Anne-Sophie
