100+ Beautiful Script, Brush & Calligraphy Fonts
Brush, script, and calligraphy fonts can add a touch of elegance to your design. They’re stylish, flowing, and full of character! We’ve picked some of the best examples of these typefaces to add to your collection.
Whether you’re looking for a precise and decorative script font or a bold brush typeface that needs to grab the reader’s attention, we’ll have something for you here. Each of these fonts is beautifully crafted to add character to your next design project, perfect for logos, lettering, clothing design, posters, flyers, quotes, and so much more.
What Are Script, Brush & Calligraphy Fonts?
All these typefaces have similarities, but each of these styles is unique in a different way. Before we dive into the fonts themselves, let’s quickly outline the difference between them.
Calligraphy Fonts
Calligraphic script fonts aim to mimic the style of traditional calligraphy writing. Some have connecting letter designs, and some don’t, but they all have the type of character you’d expect from a hand-written piece of calligraphy.
Script Fonts
Script fonts are a traditional typeface choice, referencing back to formally written styling in the 17th century. They have a flowing, connected style, and most characters adjoin another with a connecting stroke. They can roughly be separated into formal script fonts and casual script fonts. The former is more traditional, and the latter mimic a more quickly written, informal style.
Brush Fonts
These often have a much heavier weight, to look similar to letterforms that have been painted with a brush. They have the same connected, flowing style as calligraphy or script fonts, but their block-style makes them more suited for uses where you need a bigger impact!

9 Best Online Video Libraries To Teach Yourself Design & Development
With free tutorials you can teach yourself almost anything online. But premium video libraries are often much more detailed with pro-level instructors.
These videos are very helpful when you’re just getting into web design or development. There’s so much to learn in both areas and it can be super confusing if you’re new to frontend code, backend code, or general UI/UX design.
Below are our picks for the best online video libraries for teaching yourself how to make websites. Granted some libraries excel in certain subjects but overall this list should have something for everyone.
1. Code School
Code School has been around for years and it’s one of the few sites devoted to web dev languages.
Many of their videos are accessible free of charge but the larger paths cost money. It’s all rolled into one monthly subscription which makes it great for anyone who wants to progress through these lessons one after another.
If you look at the paths page you’ll find lessons on basically everything.
From basic frontend HTML/CSS/JS code all the way to Python and even Android/iOS programming for mobile apps.
Code School is a solid place to start for any aspiring programmer since their teaching materials are fantastic for learning the ropes (and a bit more!)
2. Codecademy
Another viable online coding library is Codecademy which follows a very similar structure.
With Codecademy you can sign up for free and get access to a few smaller courses on demand. But for their full library they charge based on paths or specific courses.
One thing I like about Codecademy is their attention to detail in their ‘intensive’ program. You can learn about that here but basically the intensive program lets you connect with professional developers who review your code and help guide you along the way.
This is the next best thing to a real mentorship and you can do it all from the comfort of your home office.
Topics range from basic HTML to more advanced JavaScript and TypeScript along with database engines like SQLite. Check out the main catalog page to see everything they’ve got to offer.
3. TutsPlus
The awesome folks at Envato have a massive repository of tutorials in their TutsPlus website.
Most of the written tutorials are totally free and you can view those just by searching the site. However they also have a monthly subscription for pro access to video courses on practically every subject under the sun.
You can learn Illustrator graphics, photo editing, icon design, Android programming and backend development all from the TutsPlus video library.
These videos are listed under courses and the team releases new ones every month. With a subscription you get access to all these courses including the newest ones and oldest ones. That’s what makes TutsPlus one of the better choices for self-learning in the design/dev space.
Recently Envato combined the TutsPlus subscription with their Elements library too. So along with 1000+ HD video courses you also get access to free design assets. Pretty sweet!
4. Lynda
When you think of sites to learn stuff online Lynda has to be one of the first brands to come to mind.
They have video courses on absolutely everything from Microsoft Office to IT/database management and programming. You can learn graphic design, web design, and basically every single program in the Adobe Creative Suite on Lynda.
Their library is a subscription platform so you’d renew monthly for access to all of their content.
Considering how much is here and how much they update I have to say it’s a great choice. However I think their lessons are a bit ‘lighter’ and made to target absolute beginners.
So if you’re starting from scratch learning to build websites Lynda is a wonderful choice. If you already know the basics and want to push a little further I’d say others offer more.
5. Pluralsight
One of the largest competitors to Lynda is Pluralsight. They recently merged with Digital Tutors making this one of the largest digital video learning libraries on the web.
Originally Pluralsight was meant to be a tech/IT library while Digital Tutors covered more creative design courses. Now it’s just one big library and works on the same model as Lynda.
Their courses include beginner-tier stuff but also go far beyond the basics with difficulty labels for each course. So it’s easy to find beginner level courses or intermediate/advanced levels too.
And these courses delve into plenty of topics like OOP JavaScript or building custom WordPress snippets.
To learn more about course quality and how this all works there’s plenty of reviews you can read. But ultimately it comes down to what sort of education you’re looking for.
I mostly recommend Pluralsight for more technical content like IT, database management, programming, and web development. The library does have all of the creative content from Digital Tutors so that’s awesome. But my impression is that Pluralsight really hits it out of the park with technical content.
Also they offer a free trial so there’s no fee to test out the library before subscribing.
6. Treehouse
Treehouse is one of the newest online teaching resources compared to many others in this list. Yet it’s also one of the best and most revered from past students.
The majority of Treehouse content is aimed towards beginners so it’ll really hold your hand through everything. It’s mostly an online video resource for learning development with very few design courses (if any).
But let me say there’s a ton of great dev courses here.
You can learn frontend, backend, database management, and even app development. This means you could even merge different paths and teach yourself fullstack development all from this one library.
These courses are meant to get you ready for a career in the industry which is perfect for someone educating themselves and hoping to land a stable job.
Have a look at their stories page for testimonials to see if this could be the right choice for you.
7. Udemy
With Udemy it’s really a mixed bag of videos.
The Udemy team don’t necessarily record or teach any of their lessons. Instead this is a user-created library with teachers from all over the world recording their own video courses.
They sell at totally different rates and since they’re all taught in different ways the quality fluctuates a lot. However there are tons of gems in here if you know where to look.
Try searching for anything you want to learn like ‘ruby on rails’ or ‘laravel’. You’ll find plenty of courses at varying skill levels all with different user ratings. Check out the reviews and if they seem good you may pick up a course and give it a shot.
Often times Udemy runs monthly sales on courses so you can usually pick these up at 40% off (or more!) if you keep an eye on pricing.
8. Coursera
Coursera is a little different than all the others in this list.
With most video learning sites you subscribe monthly for full access to courses. Or with something like Udemy you get individual courses at a fixed rate.
Coursera sells access to their courses individually but they work almost like online college courses where you learn from a specific teacher and get real feedback on your work.
In fact, many of the teachers at Coursera are real-world college professors. This means you’re learning from some of the best minds across dozens of categories.
It’s still a newer platform but take a quick browse through their lessons and see what you can find.
9. Khan Academy
Last but certainly not least is the incredible Khan Academy. These video lessons are not up to the same quality as many premium libraries and these videos rarely go into as much depth.
However Khan Academy is totally free to join and their videos are free for life. That’s probably the biggest selling point to get in here are start searching.
So it’s free and great quality. What’s the downside?
Khan doesn’t really have the same volume or level of detail compared to big libraries like TutsPlus, Lynda, or Pluralsight. Instead Khan has mostly introductory content which covers the fundamentals only.
You can find a few in-depth courses here but not as much as other sites. And most of Khan Academy is geared towards traditional learning (math, physics, history) rather than web development.
But if you do a search on the site you can find plenty of videos teaching HTML or JavaScript. Not to mention they have an entire computer programming category so that’s probably worth looking into as well.

How GDPR Will Change The Way You Develop
Europe’s imminent privacy overhaul means that we all have to become more diligent about what data we collect, how we collect it, and what we do with it. In our turbulent times, these privacy obligations are about ethics as well as law. Web developers have a major role to play here. After all, healthy data protection practice is as much about the development side — code, data, and security — as it is about the business side of process, information, and strategy.

A Comprehensive Website Planning Guide (Part 2)
In Part 1, I emphasized on the importance of recognizing the purpose of your website, and why planning for the web is just as important as planning for anything else associated with your business. Today, I'd like to go into more detail of evaluating a plan, choosing web professionals, and determining your site structure. Writing The Plan (Or Proposal) Note: The following section is for designers, but everyone ought to understand this part of the process.

13 Best Ways to Learn CSS Grid
CSS Grid an increasingly popular method for creating complex responsive web design layouts that render more consistently across browsers. Now is the time to familiarize yourself with CSS Grid, so we’ve collected 13 of the best ways to get started learning today.
Rather than old-school methods such as tables or the box model, CSS Grid allows you to create more asymmetrical layouts and more standardized code that is cross-browser compatible. Most major website browsers already support CSS Grid and it is a W3C Candidate Recommendation, which would formalize it as a standard practice. It’s widely believed that CSS Grid will be the future of website layouts.
1. MDN: CSS Grid Layout

Mozilla has great resources in the MDN Web Docs guides, proving simple explanation of how things work and code examples to get you started.
Here’s what MDN says about CSS grid:
CSS Grid Layout excels at dividing a page into major regions, or defining the relationship in terms of size, position, and layer, between parts of a control built from HTML primitives.
Like tables, grid layout enables an author to align elements into columns and rows. However, many more layouts are either possible or easier with CSS grid than they were with tables. For example, a grid container’s child elements could position themselves so they actually overlap and layer, similar to CSS positioned elements.
The documentation offers code and examples plus elements that you can open and play with on your own in CodePen or JSFiddle. This might be the best starting place in terms of thinking about CSS grid.
2. Learn CSS Grid

Learn CSS Grid is a guide to learning the technique from Jonathan Suh, based on the method in which he learned it. The guide is well-organized and starts with a table of contents that allows you to jump from section to section.
This guide is easy to follow – some coding knowledge required – and is a great resource for CSS grid beginners. Each element comes with a visual example, which might be the key piece in bringing all the information together.
3. Tuts+ Guide to CSS Grids
Tuts+ has built a complete guide to help you learn CSS Grid, whether you’re just getting started with the basics or you want to explore more advanced CSS. It’s done through a series of clear and thorough tutorials, with practical examples throughout.
4. Codeacademy: Introduction to Grids
Codeacademy has long been one of the best places to learn coding skills in a practical format. While you do have to create an account to access the tutorials, it is a great way to learn using a lesson-plan based format.
Here’s the description of the Introduction to Grids course:
In this lesson, we introduce a new, powerful tool called CSS grid. The grid can be used to lay out entire web pages, Whereas Flexbox is mostly useful for positioning items in a one-dimensional layout, CSS grid is most useful for two-dimensional layouts, providing many tools for aligning and moving elements across both rows and columns.
Codeacademy course can be taken in sequence – start at the very beginning if you are completely new to backend web design – or on their own. It’s free to create an account and take many of the courses.
5. FreeCodeCamp: Learn CSS Grid in 5 Minutes

Get what CSS grid is about and only have a few minutes to really dive into it? This quick start tutorial from FreeCodeCamp will help you get familiar with it in just five minutes. (Granted you need to know some basics already.)
Here’s the takeaway: “The two core ingredients of a CSS Grid are the wrapper (parent) and the items (children). The wrapper is the actual grid and the items are the content inside the grid.”
The 5-minute guide also includes relevant markup.
6. The CSS Layout Workshop
The CSS Layout Workshop is a set of paid courses from Rachel Andrew, one of the leaders in CSS grid work. The courses are an online, self-study program that are ideal f you like more structure to learning something new.
To see if this course is right for you, the first part is free. It focuses on CSS basics and explains all the basics you need to go deeper into the material. The good thing about the complete set of courses is there aren’t any additional costs; you just need a web browser and text editor to get started.
7. Game: Grid Garden

Grid Garden is a game that uses CSS to grow a successful carrot garden. It’s a good primer on how CSS properties work to get you in the right mindset to think about CSS grid.
And well, it’s a lot of fun. See if you can make it through all 28 levels.
8. Grid by Example

Grid by Example shows how different CSS grid configurations will look in supporting browsers. Each grid configuration includes a visual example with links to pages with more information about the technique and the code.
There’s a fun bonus as well with dummy page layouts so you can see how different CSS grid examples look with real content applied to them.
9. Video: Learn the CSS Grid

If learning via seeing someone do something is more up your alley, watch the Learn the CSS Grid video. (It also has accompanying text.)
The 18-minute video is a quicker starter tutorial that the maker hopes will “facilitate your eagerness to explore the full potential of the CSS grid.”
The video takes you through setting up a project, defining the HTML, defining some basic rules, defining grids, nesting the CSS grid and template areas and a few responsive tricks. The video and text include screenshots of all the markup.
10. CSS-Tricks: A Complete Guide to Grid

CSS-Tricks has long been one of the go-to places to learn about coding. The Complete Guide to Grid is no exception. The guide, which was published in November 2017, is an up-to-date primer on the 2D system.
This guide is fantastic and broken into digestible sections.
But the best part might be the gallery of CSS grid in action. Make sure to spend some time in the gallery for inspiration.
11. CSS Grid Ask Me Anything
Have questions about CSS grid? Ask an expert.
This Git includes simple questions and answers from Rachel Andrew. While she only answers reduced questions, it is still pretty helpful. Just make sure to follow the ground rules.
12. Video: Progressing Our Layouts

Jen Simmons shares her talk from the 2016 Enhance Conference for users. The 30-minute video walks through examples of CSS grid in action and she touches on how to write code in a time of transitioning techniques.
Watch the video and then you can also go through the slide deck as well. The pair is pretty useful for thinking about CSS grid in broader terms.
13. CSS Grid Playground

Ready to test all those CSS grid ideas and skills? The CSS Grid Playground includes grid container and grid items locations so you can start coding and see what happens in real time.
It’s a good way to get comfortable with the basics and see changes as you make them. (It almost feels like a game.)
Conclusion
Stop procrastinating if you haven’t taken the leap into at least familiarizing yourself with CSS grid. Make it a goal to get comfortable with best practices so that you can better understand how it works and how to use it.
Here’s a shout out to all the folk out there who are providing great resources about CSS grid. You have to admit the web design and development community is pretty amazing when it comes to knowledge sharing. If you use one of these lessons or tutorials and get a benefit from it, make sure to share the love with the author and let him or her know they’ve helped you.

5 Subtle Metrics That Could Make or Break Your Website
Not keeping track of your website’s metrics, or doing it but not taking action based on what you find, is more or less equal to walking around in pitch darkness hoping to somehow reach your destination: both are possible but highly unlikely.
But which metrics should you pay special attention to? Some of them you’ve probably heard about hundreds of times as they tend to crop up in every self-respecting webmaster’s watch list. There are, however, many metrics besides bounce rates and Google keyword rankings—perhaps less well-known and less-discussed but still very important.
Today we’ll take a look at some of the less well known metrics that can make all the difference between success and obscurity.
1. Number of Pages Receiving Visitors From Search Engines
When you see significant changes in the quantity of your traffic it doesn’t always comes from the changes in keyword demand or better ranking of your existing pages. One of the less obvious reasons is the changes in the number of pages of your website indexed by Google. You may get a dramatic increase or decrease in traffic without actively doing anything and without experiencing significant changes in search keywords patterns, simply because Google is crawling deeper or shallower on your website.
If you add content and these pages don’t get indexed, then something is wrong.
In what way is this useful? You get an additional insight into the performance of your website. If you add content and these pages don’t get indexed, then something is wrong. If Google crawls deeper on your site, you can connect this to some changes you’ve done recently and make a note for yourself that this particular action had a positive impact. For example, if you alter your navigation structure and soon notice that more pages start getting visits, you can mark it as a useful practice and continue experimenting in this direction.
2. Split Between Branded and Non-Branded Traffic
Branded keywords are the ones that contain direct reference to your company or product name while non-branded are broader terms only tangentially dealing with your business and more related to the industry on the whole.
Seeing the amount of both types of traffic and how they perform against each other helps you balance between them and define your future SEO strategy.
On the one hand, branded traffic usually performs better in terms of pure conversions—but this is mostly because when somebody searches a branded keyword they already know about your business and are probably looking for a particular item. In other words, more branded traffic means higher brand affinity and awareness.
…more branded traffic means higher brand affinity…
On the other hand, it is from non-branded traffic that you get most of your new users, visitors and potential future customers who discover your brand for the first time. If your branded campaigns fare better than non-branded ones, it means that you should concentrate on building more brand affinity.
3. Crawl Errors
Among other things, Google Search Console shows you crawl errors—site-wide by default, but the report can be fine-tuned if you so wish. Needless to say, any crawl error you notice should be acted upon immediately, its existence means that some parts of your website don’t work as they are supposed to and don’t bring you any traffic.
Site errors should be addressed first of all because they affect your entire website. DNS and server are the most important: the former meaning that Googlebot doesn’t connect to your site at all, and the latter that your server takes too long to respond. Using Fetch with Google and then following help instructions is a good starting point to solving these problems.
4. Final Conversions (Goal Achievement)
Only final conversions can show you how well your strategy is working…
Yes, conversion is probably the metric that gets most discussion out there, so how does it fall into a list of lesser-known metrics? It is very simple: we are talking about final conversions, the achievement of the end goal you set in front of your business—for an online retailer it will be making a sale, for a SaaS agency selling a subscription, and so on—in other words, you should measure the factual results, something that puts money in your pocket. Free subscriptions, for example, aren’t conversions; many people subscribe with a vague intention of catching up with this reading later on only to unsubscribe half a year later without ever interacting with your website again. Only final conversions can show you how well your strategy is working and if you should change anything.
5. Backlink Profile
Backlinks still play an important role in SEO, but their quantity doesn’t matter much anymore—quality is much more important. A single backlink from a high-authority website is worth a hundred easy-to-get ones; and these days Google may actually penalize you if you tend to rely on many low-quality backlinks. Therefore, it is the quality of your backlink profile that you should pay attention to, not the sum total of all your backlinks.
…it is the quality of your backlink profile that you should pay attention to, not the sum total of all your backlinks.
How to get more high-quality backlinks? Create valuable content. Seriously get into guest blogging, get in touch with influencers in your industry. Avoid cheap spammy links like the plague.
There is much more to SEO than just measuring the most obvious metrics and taking mechanical actions to improve them when you believe they lag too far behind. SEO strategy is more about seeing the bigger picture, using lesser-known metrics to glean the meaning of the changes that happen with your resource, and taking swift action based on your findings.

Wix Code Review: Building Web Apps With Ease
One of the common problems most front-end web designers face is building the back-end of website projects. Usually, designers have to team up with web developers to work on projects such as web apps and eCommerce platforms.
What if there was a way to easily design both the front-end and back-ends of websites such as checkout systems, membership databases, web apps, and more, in a user-friendly and approachable way? Well, that’s exactly what Wix Code does. Let’s take a closer look.
What Is Wix Code?
Wix Code is an IDE (integrated development environment) with a JavaScript backend built for web developers and web designers to let you “create without limits”.
While the main Wix website builder focuses on offering the simplest website setup experience to beginners, Wix Code takes the website builder to the next level and allows designers to add and customize the design at a deeper level.
The main purpose of this tool is to help you build websites and apps in a modern way, using JavaScript and Wix APIs. And, of course, to offer an all-in-one platform to build, host, and manage your client websites in one place.
Why Use It?
With a normal website builder, you can only create static websites. But, with Wix Code, you can build more sophisticated websites and web apps.
For example, you can use Wix Code to build a membership platform to sell premium membership plans and let users signup for your website quickly and easily.
Wix Code handles all the heavy parts of the back-end as well as the front-end design. All you have to do is drag-and-drop the content blocks in the right place to design the front-end and then click a few buttons to create databases to collect user inputs and connect third-party APIs for the backend.
The best part is you don’t have to re-upload files to your server every time you make a change to your design because everything is hosted in the cloud.
It’s every front-end designer’s dream come true.
How Wix Code Works
After you sign up for a Wix account, you can start building a website with Wix Code right away. If you already have a Wix account, you can use Wix Code to edit your existing website or build a new site as well.
Simply go over to the Wix Editor > Tools > Developer Tools to enable Wix Code. Click on the arrow at the bottom left corner to show the Wix Code panel. From there, you can start customizing the design without limits.
Once you finish the design, you can connect a custom domain name and publish the website or your app without having to setup a server. Wix provides hosting for all plans.
If you’re a freelance designer or a web design agency, you can also manage all your clients from one place by building and publishing all the websites on Wix.
Here are just a few of the features we found in Wix Code to be pretty amazing.
Wix Code APIs
Wix Code extends the capabilities of the Wix website editor with advanced options for customizing the design and adding custom functions. It allows you to use many of Wix Code APIs to add more features and options.
All you have to do is open the JavaScript code editor at the bottom of the Wix Editor to integrate Wix Code APIs with your website. For example, you can integrate APIs to store local data and user sessions. Or fetch more information about the current users and prompt logins. And you can do much more by using third-party APIs as well.
Normally, you have to go through thousands of lines of code before integrating an API with a website. You have to create JavaScript files to store variables, functions, handle validations, and much more. But, Wix Code makes things much easier.
Store Data With Database Collections
If you’re building a web app or a platform with a backend that features user accounts, profiles, and dashboards, Wix Code can handle it.
Wix Code has a useful function called Database Collections, which allows you to create databases to store and manage your content in the cloud as well as add and manage many other types of data such as user inputs and form submission information.
The Database Collections doesn’t involve any coding. It basically looks like an Excel spreadsheet. Even a complete beginner can easily create a database, add new fields, and choose which data to store in the Database Collection.
After completing the Database, you can connect it with your website elements such as signup forms and checkout systems to securely gather and store data.
Build Multiple Pages Using A Single Layout
One of the coolest features of Wix Code is the ability to create Dynamic Pages, which lets you create a template that shares the same design with multiple pages.
For example, if you want to create 50 product pages in your online store featuring a consistent design, you can use Dynamic Pages to create a single layout that shares the same design across all those 50 pages.
This also makes editing and changing your designs much easier. If you want to change something in those 50 pages like the footer links or the color of a button, all you have to do is edit the Dynamic Page template and the changes will get updated across all 50 pages.
With Wix Code, you can create two types of Dynamic Pages: Item pages for products and items and Category pages for product catalogs and groups of items. Then you can connect a database to the dynamic page to easily update its content as well.
Create Interactive Elements
Adding interactive elements to your website design is another important factor that helps improve website user interactions and the overall user experience. Wix Code provides several easy solutions for adding interactive effects to different types of elements in your design.
All you have to do is select an element on your website design, choose a trigger action from the events section of the Properties tab on the left side, and add your own JavaScript code in the code editor to make different elements interactive upon scrolling, mouse hover, button clicks, and more.
Built-In Form Builder
Usually, you have to code from scratch or integrate third-party apps or plugins to create different kinds of forms on your website. Wix Code comes with a built-in form builder that supports many different user input options for creating everything from advanced user registration forms to hotel booking forms and more.
The forms you build with Wix Code can also be connected with Database Collections to effortlessly store user input data.
Wix allows you to choose from many different types of user input methods from drop-down menus, radio buttons, upload buttons, checkboxes, datepicker calendars, and more for designing unique forms. All you have to do is drag and drop elements to design a custom form.
Then you can connect the form with a Database Collection by adding a Dataset to record all the user input data into your database. It’s as simple as that.
Who Is It For?
Web designers are often skeptical about website builders. But, Wix Code is an exceptional tool that’ll help you save plenty of time that goes into coding the trivial parts of a website design while also providing the solutions to build complex backends with minimum code.
Even if you’re looking to build an app or a website for your business and have minimum experience in web design, Wix Code will help you save thousands of dollars spent on hiring web design agencies.
Both web designers and complete beginners can greatly benefit from this tool.
Wix Code is still fairly new and in development at Beta stage. You can explore its many resources and tutorial videos to learn how to use it.
After all, Wix Code is free. Give it a test drive and have a look yourself.
Thanks to Wix for sponsoring this post, and helping support Design Shack.

5 Fun Augmented Reality Apps for Design Inspiration
Augmented reality is a growing trend in application design and development. Apple has invested in the technology with recent updates (ARKit), and plans to include even more AR features. So how do you start planning to design for augmented reality?
It starts with playing with apps already on the market to see how they work. What do you like (or dislike)? Here are five AR apps to help jumpstart your design inspiration and hopefully get you thinking about this next generation technology. (And how to make it look great and function well.)
Augmented Reality Primer

Augmented reality is a mash-up of a virtual world and the real world in a digital space. AR apps use your actual location and project virtual objects into that space.
The Pokemon Go phenomenon is one of the most mainstream examples of AR apps in use. Users chased digital objects through the streets and parks in their towns in a game that many users said got them off the couch and out of the house.
While gaming is the most popular application of augmented reality, it can be used for other things as well, such as a training tool or educational option. Thanks to AR, users can enter a place where they might not otherwise have access.
1. World Brush

World Brush is a mix between a game and creative outlet. The app allows users to paint virtual graffiti on pretty much anything.
And then there’s a bit of a hide-and-seek social component to it:
Every painting is anonymous and only visible where it was created. Users have the ability to like, dislike and report paintings which helps hide the bad stuff and showcase the good stuff for others.
(There’s also an option to make drawings private so other users can’t see them.)
Users can also share drawings and use a variety of brushes, colors, and tool to create anything they can imagine.
iTunes
2. IKEA Place

Augmented reality can have a lot of practical use in ecommerce, helping shoppers avoid buyer’s remorse.
The IKEA Catalog app lets users test out furniture in their own space so you can see if that couch and chair will fit in your living room or if the color of a certain table matches the rest of your décor.
From the developer:
The app includes 3D and true-to-scale models of everything from sofas and armchairs to footstools and coffee tables. IKEA Place gives you an accurate impression of the furniture’s size, design, and functionality.
The app also includes plenty of video clips and 360-degree views of furniture sets to help shoppers make choices. It’s a totally different experience for shopping online, and within an app in particular.
iTunes
Google Play
3. Ink Hunter

Ink Hunter makes AR useful for the general consumer with an app that allows users to “try on” tattoos before committing to something permanent.
The app projects any tattoo design on any part of your body so you can see how it will actually look. It works from multiple angles.
The app comes with premade tattoos or you can upload your own artwork.
iTunes
Google Play
4. Star Chart

This app is for amateur astronomers or anyone who wants to know more about what they are seeing in the sky. Just point your phone or tablet at the sky and the app will show you exactly what you are looking it with names and drawings of constellations and explanations of what they are. From the app developer:
Using state of the art GPS technology, an accurate 3D simulation of the visible universe, and a great deal of technical wizardry, Star Chart calculates – in real time – the current location of every star, planet, and moon visible from Earth and shows you precisely where they are; even in broad daylight!
The app mixes reality with a hint of time travel as well. You can actually change time perspective and see how the same sky looked up t0 10,000 years ago.
What’s cool about the design of Star Chart is that it isn’t overwhelmingly complicated. The AR overlays give users exactly what they need without too many bells and whistles.
iTunes
Google Play
5. TapMeasure

TapMeasure puts a variety of tools right into your phone. You can measure distances, check how straight objects are and even create floor plans and three-dimensional renderings.
For the DIYer, this app can help you visualize and plan in a way that hasn’t been possible in the past. Plus, everything you create in the app can be exported to common software such as CAD for actual use.
The top three elements in the app are the 3D room builder, quick measurement tool, and smart level. They are sure to help with your home improvement projects… and help you think about ways to build AR experiences with a lot of practical use.
iTunes
Conclusion
The best thing about AR apps is that they allow you to cross the lines between reality and fantasy. Users – and designers – can create imagined worlds that can be a fun diversion from everyday life or create a new tool that can make something (such as interior decorating) that much easier.
What about AR most intrigues you? Now is the time to start thinking about how to incorporate some of these kinds of technologies and effects into your projects.
Apple’s ARKit is a good place to start. The company has invested in the technology and expects it to take off:
Build unparalleled augmented reality experiences for hundreds of millions of users on iOS 11 — the biggest AR platform in the world. ARKit blends digital objects and information with the environment around you, taking apps far beyond the screen and freeing them to interact with the real world in entirely new ways.
Apple doesn’t miss the mark that often, so it’s definitely worth exploring.

Bringing Together React, D3, And Their Ecosystem
Since its creation in 2011, D3.js has become the de facto standard for building complex data visualizations on the web. React is also quickly maturing as the library of choice for creating component-based user interfaces. Both React and D3 are two excellent tools designed with goals that sometimes collide. Both take control of user interface elements, and they do so in different ways. How can we make them work together while optimizing for their distinct advantages according to your current project?

8 Ways to Make DesOps Work For You
In the modern world, it’s the development team’s speed that often defines the viability of a product. At the same time, there is one key element which is most important, and most problematic: design.
Design often becomes a bottleneck and significantly impacts the whole development process, no matter the size of your team. Sometimes superhuman efforts from a design lead help drive the design process, but as soon as workload increases, you have to scale your team.
How often have you seen:
developers sitting idle, waiting for artwork;
developers lacking design assets;
mysterious new components that look suspiciously like duplicates of existing components;
diverse design elements from different designers, for the same project.
If any or all of these sound familiar, then it’s high-time to implement DesOps (Design Operations).
DesOps Specialists
The term DesOps or DesignOps is a replica of the term DevOps which is a software engineering practice that aims at unifying development processes to create greater efficiency. Similar to DevOps specialists, DesOps specialists are experienced designers with management skills who understand the design process within the larger context of product development.
While we may not all have the “DesOps” term in our job title, many senior designers are already responsible for the same role. From establishing design processes, to developing design systems, to creating strategies and managing design teams, DesOps is an increasingly in-demand role.
8 Ways to Start DesOps
What really matters, is that this approach is scaleable, and relevant even in teams with a single designer. So, how do you start implementing DesOps?
1. Develop a Criteria for a Completed Design
Designers need to know when their job is complete and ready to be passed to the development team. For example, designers need a clear understanding of which states each screen needs to have, and which assets will be required for the development team to build those assets.
It may feel like this is an area that designers should inherently understand. But it is actually one of the most common points of friction in a project and shouldn’t be ignored. If you articulate what is required clearly, then you’ll reduce conflicts, and ensure that everyone understands their responsibilities.
The benefits of this are: it allows a steady development pace to be maintained; it reduces the total development time; it reduces the number of discussions necessary between designers, developers, and leads.
2. Define Design & Delivery Requirements
For the last point, we were considering specifically what the designer should convey to developers. This point is about what form the designer should use to convey the design—mockups, polished design, prototypes, moodboards—what does the designer need to provide in order to effectively convey their intentions in a format that the developers can understand.
There are numerous options, such as Zeplin or InVision but one of the most common complaints from developers is that these formats don’t provide everything they need (such as exported assets). However, that is usually because designers haven’t properly exported their designs. By clarifying for designers what they are expected to produce, they can pass the right assets on easily.
You should create an internal document that will contain specific technical requirements for assets, design tools, collaboration with developers and other team members; finally, this document should clearly define when and how designs must be delivered.
3. Develop a Design System
A set of design and engineering solutions, as well as guides for their implementation, will ensure a number of advantages: product integrity; simpler and faster onboarding of new team members; more efficient work of both designers and developers (as they can communicate in one language defined by the design system).
The benefits of this include: improved overall quality of work; reduces “sag” when you scale the team; increases the speed of both design and development.
4. Select, Monitor, and Restrict the Team’s Toolbox
We all love cool new tools, but an effective team works with a uniform set of tools, and ensuring this unity is your responsibility.
All tools should be up-to-date, but if an update is skipped for any reason, then everyone should skip it.
The benefits of this include: increased team engagement; increased design and development speed; improved team collaboration.
5. Develop an Approach to Version Control
Developers are luckier in terms of this task, because version control for code is a mature industry with plenty of options. It’s hard to produce a similar approach for designers, as processes are so diverse, but in the last year tools like Abstract, Kaktus, and Plant have been increasingly popular. You can even have multiple designers working on a single layout with something like Figma.
The benefits of this are: improved communication; simplified team scaling; fast tracks design processes as multiple designers can work on a single project productively.
6. Implement Prototypes and Visual Documentation
In order to describe all functionality related to designs, try to use “visual documentation” instead of writing tech specs. In most cases, it is enough for a developer to have an interactive prototype to understand the basic logic and find answers to most questions.
The benefits of this include: reduced time writing tech specs; reduces the scale of work for technical writers; developers spend less time reading documentation and more time writing code; designers are more productive; accelerated development pace.
7. Integrate Designers into Your Development Framework
There is absolutely no place for design in many popular software development methodologies; whatever development process you’re using, find space for designers.
The benefits of this are: a united team with improved communication; increased development speed; reduced rework, and developer downtime.
8. Present Measurable Indicators of Improvements to the Whole Team
You should constantly demonstrate the growth of quantitative and qualitative indicators thanks to the implemented changes, for both team members and top-management. Without this, a team will be reluctant to change, while top management won’t be able to understand where and why additional resources are spent. Constant collection and presentation of positive results after implementing changes will help you obtain credibility and necessary authority for further changes in team workflow.
Benefits include: increased motivation and a stronger team; facilitation of new rules and practices; support for future innovation.
Summary
The term “DesOps” is quite new and is just starting to acquire its meaning; the first DesOps conference was only held in November, in New York.
For now I would simply call this a culture that aims at developing and facilitating solid design processes. But I feel that in the near future we will have this as a separate design role in every product team. However I feel we can already safely talk about the importance of introducing these practices in order to improve the efficiency of design workflow and product development in general.

A Comprehensive Guide To UI Design
(This is a sponsored article.) With the big picture established — mapping user journeys and defining your design’s look and feel — my fifth article in this series of ten articles dives into the details of designing user interface components. UX, IA, UI: All of these abbreviations can be confusing. In reality, as designers, we’ll often be working across these different specialisms: designing the overall user experience (UX), organizing information logically as we consider information architecture (IA), and considering the granular design of the user interface (UI).

A Comprehensive Website Planning Guide (Part 1)
As a veteran designer, developer and project manager on more sites than I can count, I've identified a common problem with many web projects: failure to plan. As the same issues come up repeatedly in my work, I've written this guide in order to help our clients, other designers, businesses and organizations plan and realize successful websites. Who This Guide Is For Written in relatively non-technical language, this guide provides a broad overview of the process of developing a website, from the initial needs assessment through site launch, maintenance and follow up.
