This is a moment I've always thought was kind of weird from S3E06 but it's a really interesting moment from a gay Mike POV. We see Mike initiate a 1-on-1 conversation with El. It should be romantic, right? This is Mileven we're talking about. But no, Mike is coming purely from a platonic standpoint, AKA genuinely worried about El's health and safety! Keep in mind Mike's been struggling with severe survivors guilt since season one and last time she overexerted herself, she kinda vanished and he thought she died so I can kind of see where he's coming from? He should still trust her with her own powers though lmao

notice how Mike remains at a very healthy distance? and how serious he looks? He doesn't really look like he's gearing up to say anything romantic lmao. Plus, Max is clearly visible in the shot! Clearly she is on somebody's mind right now! Since she's so close to El in the shot, I'm guessing El's. But Max is giving them space, like everyone else in the room, because this is supposedly meant to be a romantic, intimate moment

Yet, it is not Mike who initiates the romantic nature, but El, as she takes his hand and tries to have a romantic moment (you know the type: intense eye contact, hand holdings, talking about feelings, things that don't happen in this scene, etc.)

Her head moves to block Max's and says his name tenderly, making this moment strictly between the two of them. But look at his face, bro does not look to be softening at all. A thing he is perfectly capable of doing with will but does not do here for some reason. As for what he says in this intimate moment: nothing. zero. zip. nada. Instead he breaks the moment himself, turning to look at Max

You heard me correct folks! He doesn't tell her he loves or trusts her, or even apologize, or anything she clearly wants, he looks at Max. He looks at Max almost for permission? I kinda interpret it as a shit I did not mean for this to be romantic I thought I escaped and we could just be friends that's a much better dynamic between us Max save me interrupt or something running through Mike's mind kinda way, but you can think what you want. Max has been kind of a roadblock in Mike and Els romantic relationship so far this season, and Mike looks at her for help in this situation, as if he wants her to get in between them again. Either way, Max is just as confused as the audience because, once again, this should be a romantic moment, why is Mike running away and not engaging? Mike sort of panics and books it.

(SPECIAL MENTION) just look at the way Mike feebly holds her hand. What is this shit???? This is not how you hold anyone's hand!!!!!! Let alone the girl you supposedly are in love with. His fingers are fully locked together like he’s blocking el from properly holding his hand!! If I had a boyfriend and he held my hand like that up there, there would be a conversation (or at least panic attack) about it yaknow? It's like El just handed him something he really does not want to hold. what the fuck Mike your gay is showing

anyways, then Mike fucking books it out of there leaving only Elmax in the shot (both looking at him like he's acting fucking weird cause he is)

long story short Mike is gay and El wishes Max was the one attempting to provide her emotional comfort in that moment because she absolutely probably could've done it better
