This is the tutorial I’ll be following to create a city in Blender, it seems doable on a time crunch, so I’ll attempt it.

For the final two backgrounds, I need to create a city and a house interior. I can do this quite quickly if I keep it low-poly, which is why I’ll be following this Blender tutorial. Hopefully I can make this tomorrow before my dealine on the 28th.

Shading/Lighting Reference
Tumblr media
After making my background, I quickly edited my models with textures and set up some nodes for the shaders. It gave me a good idea of where the light and shadows hit on the characters, and it also is useful to use for the painting style of my comic.

Here’s the background I made for my graphic novel, I can change the angles, soften the colours and reuse it for different scenes which will cut down a lot of time on redrawing each background.

Comic Scene So Far
Tumblr media
I have been experimenting with the different shaders I have bought. I am happy with this so far, but I think I’ll do one more attempt as it doesn’t look as atmospheric as I would like.

This is a render so far for the environment, it’s very foggy, so I plan on toning that down and sorting out the lighting. Afterwards, I can change the shaders and edit the textures to make it look like a comic.

This is the tutorial I will follow, but instead of using realistic shaders, I’ll be replacing them with comic shaders to fit the style of my graphic novel.

Comic Shaders Blender
Tumblr media
This is a test I made yesterday to see what I could do with some comic shaders I bought for blender yesterday. I want to make 3D backgrounds that look 2D so I can use them in my Graphic Novel without having to redraw the setting in each panel.

This is a process which I am considering using. I’ll be rendering out some of my backgrounds and using Blender to create a cell shaded cartoon look to my backgrounds.

This is really helpful to me as I am planning on having to make a lot of backgrounds for my Graphic Novel, instead I may use this to speed up the process and get some interesting-looking results.

Princess Mononoke Artbook

This is the second art book I bought, this was helpful to see how the layout was for the compositing page and the expressive faces of the characters. I also like how they added a bit of the story alongside some of the character designs and concept work.

Spirited Away Artbook Inspiration
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I bought two art books from Amazon to see how a professional would layout the designs and artwork. The Spirited Away book gave me a lot of inspiration for my concept character designs and backgrounds. I also studied how they laid out the book and hope to achieve something of higher qaulity than my previous TV Series art book.

I found this video which shows cgi mixed with 2D puppets. Although I’ll be using frame by frame 2D, this trailer illustrates the kind of look I might be going for.

This is the animatic for my graphic novel trailer, I plan on changing a lot of this to make the theme more obvious. I will make some thumbnails to add new scenes for the trailer. At the moment, I am considering using a mix of frame by frame and puppetry in After Effects for this to add more dynamic landscapes and camera work and also some character expressions/movements.
