I liked Love, Simon

I think it was a very grounded look at the struggles of coming out.

I mean , parts of it were over dramatized and a little silly, mainly, the principal and his friends’ over reactions to being “lied to” (I mean, come on, they should’ve understood that he was literally being blackmailed and that coming out is fucking hard, and no one should be forcibly outed).

But for the most part, Simon’s desire to see Blue in every boy who smiled at him was realistic and crushing whenever he found out it wasn’t him.

His struggles with telling his parents was very hard to watch.

His mom saying that he could finally be himself again, that he didn’t have to hide this secret anymore.

that hit me hard because it really is hard, being a carefree kid and then when you become a teenager, you start to experience new and confusing feelings and suddenly you’re not so carefree anymore. Suddenly the whole world rushes at you and you realize everything has changed and it’ll never be the simple world you once knew. She said he deserved everything he wanted and that there were some things she couldn’t go through with him and that was just a very realistic and lovely response I think.

I also really loved how the father wasn’t angry that he was gay, he was angry at himself for putting him through all those microaggressions over the years. Not a typical homophobic caricature, but a man who’s a little insensitive and doesn’t realize that he’s pressuring his son and making him uncomfortable.

I liked Simon’s interactions with the other gay boy at school, the openly gay one. They had a touching moment of camaraderie that didn’t just involve them becoming romantically involved because hey two gay kids, must be gay for each other because that’s how it works. Nah, they shared a nice moment of friendship.

Everything in the movie just addressed struggles with identity and growing up. It was a coming of age film for gay teenagers and I really enjoyed it even though it was slow at some points.

And I wanted to beat the shit out of Martin.

But he at least felt bad in the end, and I recognize now that he was malicious but in a stupid socially awkward way, like, he just didn’t understand how cruel he was being and how much of a jackass he was.

So at the end at least there was a little bit of closure.

Oh and the ending. I would’ve been happy if we never found out who blue was. I would’ve been fine with an ending where Simon just comes to terms with his new self and opened his heart for the next great love of his life.

But it was sweet, finding out that the first boy he thought was blue was actually blue.

And they didn’t just go “cute white gay guys kissing.”

Black and jewish and gay.

Hell yeah.

And that ending, promising a happy life full of adventure, love, and friendship, nothing’s changed between them, and life is hopeful?

Cheesy, but hey.

Simon deserved that happy ending.

The message that gay people deserve their love stories and cheesy endings, I was down for it.

I give it a 90/100.

Sweet stuff. Not normally my type of movie, but I made an exception.
