( MICHIEL HUISMAN , 38 , HE/HIS ) Have you seen [ ALASTAIR FAIRCHILD ] around Faerune? They’re a [ HUMAN ] who [ IS NEUTRAL ABOUT ] restoring the Seelie Court. People have heard they’re [ OBSERVANT , METHODICAL , PATIENT ] but can also be [ APATHETIC , STUBBORN , DISCONNECTED ]. We’ll see where they fall when the revolution arrives, but until then they can be found working as a [ WATCHMAKER ].
some small statistics
name: alastair fairchild. age/dob: 38 / may 8. occupation: watchmaker / watch repairman. sexuality: demi-heteromantic heterosexual. nationality: dutch-american. languages spoken: english, dutch. hair color: dark brown. eye color: hazel, favoring greys and greens. height: 6′0″. build: athletic - lean muscle.
the only child in the fairchild line, alastair was never quite spoiled but always treated as if he were some kind of miracle. he was - after several failed attempts of starting a family, he was the result, however his mother did not survive childbirth to see her son grow.
mourning the loss of his wife, alastair’s father chose to focus all of his attention on his son and ensuring her had a good life. any memory that he presently has of his father is a good one - alastair cannot complain.
he was born, unfortunately, with many health issues. his father recalled being in the hospital with his newborn son for several weeks, and visits to the pediatrician much more throughout alastair’s youth.
born hard of hearing ( with 20% hearing in one ear and less than 8% in the other ), alastair was a candidate for cochlear implants when he came of age. his father agreed to the procedure, and alastair was a success with it. as such and after therapy, he learned to read lips as well as developed his speech. he took it upon himself to learn ASL as well, in case the implant should not serve him appropriately. alastair’s father took classes with him.
his father, levi, lived as a watchmaker ---a business handed down to him from his father and so on. it became hobby to pull alastair into his workshop and show him the means of this line: how to deconstruct the delicate pieces of watches of all kinds, how to clean them, service them, and reconstruct them. alastair was fascinated, and became smitten with the work.
he’s lived a rather solitary life, though not through any choice other than his own. socializing is just fine, but alastair much prefers the company of his work. he attended trade school after he completely his standard education and became officially apart of the family business in his twenties.
his father’s health failed shortly thereafter, and alastair was left utterly alone. in his grief he became more solitary and sucked himself more intro his trade.
if asked, he doesn’t remember exactly when he came to faerune, just that he’s lived there for a little over 10 years. he know nothing about the magic potential he has (what little there is for humans) as he tends to keep to himself, he just enjoys how he can intertwine the culture and symbolism of where he lives with his work. humans in the real world, after all, have less use for watches now - it’s something he finds that the citizens of faerun have a higher appreciation of.
some fun small facts:
very good with his hands, be it fixing things or making them or tinkering in general. he prefers to do most housework himself. sink broken? he can fix it in an afternoon. wall need sheetrocking? he can do it. car need fixing? he’ll do that, too. it comes with being a self-appointed loner, honestly.
he. loves. cats. he has a little black cat named echo and he spoils the living heck out of him.
each of his watches ( be it wrist or pocket ) come with a hand-done engraving either on their back or on the case. these can be special requested to fit a theme, but they’ve become the signature of his work. fairchild watches are something of a commodity, as he puts a lot of work and effort into them.no two are alike, and he refuses to make replicas.
he’s never been in a real relationship, mostly because of how solitary he is, but he’s not opposed to the company. in fact he’s quite lonely when it comes down to the bare bones of it ---but he’d rather sink himself into his work than seek companionship for fear of coming off as needy.
wears glasses around the house and workshop, but contacts otherwise.
is incredibly talented at reading lips.
does not have 100% hearing with his implant. he is reliant on reading lips as well as what sounds he can perceive.
speaks dutch. it was his first language, his mother and father were dutch immigrants.
