At the first scene we see remick he speaks of his wife, in all the songs he has at least one romantic lyric, except pick poor Roby clean but it can be used as context for colonialism, I'm just thinking of he losing his family and wife at colonialism and that's why he wanted Sammie powers he wanted to be able to see his people, the scene were all the vampires dance mirrors the trickster spirits who made people dance in dance circles but also is him trying to replicate Sammie magic, making people who ain't the people of his culture, dance his people dance to see if he could summon something to what Sammie did, and that's why he always transforms the couples and families together and even the vampires being his conscience, Mary and stack are surprised when smoke kills Annie because into his conscience the family would be together, or other possibility can be his wife and him being vampires that were hunted by the Choctaw vampire hunters and just he survived.

I found it so emotional the moment that Smoke took away his mojo the first time for Annie that recharged it, it was protecting him and then at the second time he took it away because he wanted to die, he wanted to kill the Klan and then to reunite with Annie and his daughter, The mojo was the thing who made she return home, the mojo protected him, the mojo was Annie's last gift,the moment he takes it away it's because he don't want to live anymore, and the best part is when the Klan man offers him money and he don't accept, he choosed to move on, he leaved the smoke of his past

R. F kuang is a genius of dark academia and i can be mistaken but I think most of it comes from her experience

I haven't seen interviews of Rebecca neither know much of her life story but all I heard of her and from her information of her books is that she is an academic weapon,she dealt with problems with her identity as a Chinese woman and she captured perfectly how the academic environment feels like for people who fits and don't,

All of her books include at least one aspect from dark academia (Yellow face don't but it complies to part of my thesis) and we have one thing in common the presence of a Chinese character who have to change who he are and cover his identity in pursue to be accepted at this environment, in The poppy war we see Rin a poor girl from the south with no opportunities to rise up if not by the academic success and when she finally makes to sinegard she is ostracized because of her speech, her customs, skin and origin, and by the Hesperians we see at a whole this aspect of an European people seeing them self's as superiors even though Rin is an academic weapon a genius she is still seen as uncivilized or uncultured, and her main motivation against the Hesperians is because they want to erase her erase her culture her people and the only characters who are from Nikan who barely are treated humanly are those who mimick the Hesperian way, like Babel, In Babel we see other character, also Chinese but raised in England into privilege and an academic life having to be grateful for being 'saved' by a man who didn't even saw him as a person, he didn't refused the parenthood of Robin or Griffin became he already was married but because he didn't saw Chinese people as people, he just had them as a "linguistic experiment", so he stripped Griffin and Robin from their homes, culture and costumes, forced them to act like Europeans, think like them and at some point there is a scene of Babel were Robin itself says that he had problems to recognize his own language, and the fact Griffin don't dream at Chinese anymore made Lovell just toss him away, Letty englobates this feeling perfectly she is an European privileged girl, she is a woman at old times and at an academic ambient but she always down the pain of the characters like the moment Victoire is speaking of how important some words are the " crioulo-haitiano" (at my language, I haven't read Babel in English and I don't know the translation for this word) and Letty just say her to stop being emotional and do it or the moment that ramy speaks of the racism and she just speaks "your skin is so beautiful" or something like that, I haven't read Babel in a time, and we can see she treats Robin into a different way than Victoire or Ramy and Ramy says at a moment "Robin is the only of us who pass as white" and that's why Letty never could understand them because she didn't saw then as people if they weren't mimicking an "civilized people", She didn't loved Ramy truly,it was just a defy for her, conquer a man who wanted nothing with her but she saw as unworthy of denying her, and at Yellow face we see things by the eye of the privileged by the eyes of a white person and for the first time into Her books the main character ain't the oppressed, she satirizes the frustration of the white people the person who envies the one who is a minority and can be better than them,an Author of my country (i forgot his name now) spoke one time " the privileged is angry for loosing the right of being mediocre' and Rebecca shows us that perfectly, how Juno has so much racist internalized thoughts mixed with envy and anger of her own mediocrity and then when the consequences of her action turn against her she fully victimizes herself

Rebecca had much access to academic ambients and she portrays perfectly the feeling of knowing you think like them you have a mind sharper like them but that you have to mimick what they seem as civilized to fit and how colonialism ain't just the one we learn from school but the one that changes a culture by itself per example here at Brazil Readings were Elitized at past, the writers mostly just wrote based on European books, hard words themes you had to know and when a writer wrote Macunaíma, a Brazilian book with Brazilian roots it was seen without seriousness, and until now even my own literature teacher said that "Macunaima is one of the worst books ever written".

The fire danced... Not at the cells, no, they barely let him see it, that made the cold nights, the cold lick of the air of the sea stronger the wind hit him like a whip,not the dangerous warmth of the Fenix that made your so in burns but your heart best like drums of war but the cold that made you lethargic the cold that drags your heart to a dark place that is hard to leave,the fire the fire lighted at him something he feels something that just blood could bring,he was lethargic of that dammed drug,weak of cuts and wounds he looked at the sky from the window tracing with his frail hands, to thin for his age, the stars of the Fenix the constellation the constellation to home.

He could see home

And his eyes after weeks finally were filled by tears,the sound were guttural and low, he forgot how to speak he didn't used his voice, so much that the sound of it felt foreign his throat ached he didn't wanted to cry, that would hurt more,

He saw the constellation of the Fenix the cruel gentle goddess the mother and destroyer the one that the rituals of home seemed to intimidate hut also to comfort, the drums sounding stronger than thunders the sound of the crones singing so loud that made their frail bodies seems distoant, men drank, women laughed, people danced, their feet shuffling at the sand around the fire the song of the jewelry making its own music with the drums the scent of the meat and the wine

The fire

Oh the fire, Altan was so small when he had this memory that he ain't sure that the fire was big as he remembers or he was small in a way that everything seemed like a mountain to his infant eyes, eyes filled with innocent but bravery the bravery of knowing he had a people, a home a goddess! That no matter what happened no matter how much he fell there it would be always someone to catch him, his father a brave warrior, he could summon fire like a king called for wine and his mother, wise and clever with a mind sharper than any blade his father ever could yield and she fought like a demon

Altan tried to stop this memory he couldn't help but he was forgetting, he didn't reminded his mother neither his father voice just the chants of the crones the fire dancing, a provocative dance the flames higher and higher giving sounds to laughs that he ain't sure that were from his people or of the goddess, the wings of the Fenix rising up, the heat was unbearable but Altan always stayed closer to the fire than any child, they used to call him the pride of Speer that he would serve the Fenix, a strong father and a strong mother, he always was clever he learnt things quicker than any child he learn the dances the prayers he learnt to fight, he couldn't do harm, he was to small,but he knew how to do it, he remember that night he clings to its memory but he is forgetting and it scaries him, he feels pathetic his body is to weak to thin, he is tall for his age but thin like a stick he ain't like his cousin or his fathe,what would they think of him? Before he can feel sad again he changes the thought,they were true men but all he feels like is a weak bastard who is addicted to this drug

He don't understand the name he always is in to much pain to hear it he curls himself to the floor trying to press the wounds to make the pain stop burning, but this was the littlest of his problems he needed more of the profane drug, every time he used it he felt like the Fenix was away, locked away, sad in disgust by the golden boy being this scrawny little mess who couldn't even speak,but it felt so good, the kind of little death who feels so pleasurable,he abandoned way long ago the hope of finding his parents again, and a part of him didn't wanted them to see him that way he remembers walking at the market with his mother and she pointed to a drunk thin men layed at the floor, "he is less than a dog" he questions if his mother would look at him and say the same thing,he is used to insults but hearing from her mouth would feel like he wanted death, he wanted to cry more but he had no energy, he just had memories he don't know are true, the disgust of a goddess and the thought he wants to ignore that his parents ain't there not because they can't but because they are dead, Altan didn't felt like a speerly like a son of the Fenix he felt exactly what he was, a little boy locked away being treated like an animal, a boy who just wanted his father arms around him knowing that if he were with him nothing would hurt him and his mother lap, to lay there and forget the pain the sadness the shame and the voice the agony that rised inside of him.

This night he cried until he slept on the cold floor and dreaming about home, he didn't know enough of the world to dream about something else and he don't even could desire other thing,

Weird how the thing he most desired was the thing he was most scared of receiving.

I need of answers!

It's said at the books that Altan was raised by Irjah when he was rescued but I want to know how

Was he raised like a son?

Was he raised by like servants at Irhaj house(yeah I do headcanon all the masters are rich)

Was he raised at other property occasionally receiving visits? Like he was being hidden from Irhaj family or friends?

I like to think he was raised at the same property but by servants, close to what happened with Robin in Babel, with occasionally receiving visits from Irja but mainly raised by teachers because I like to think like that, I don't think he was treated like an adoptive son because he was mute for 3 whole years before be found and I don't think that if Irjah saw him as a son he wouldn't insist into making him speak, I like to think that when he was experiencing the withdrawl effects he was burning himself exactly like Rin and that he trained combat alone to don't forget his speerly fighting style, when they reached golyn Niss and we receive the information that Irhaj was dead (if you prefer the theory he was raised like his son) Altan got that affected to use opium because of Irjah death or by the fact of finding out that all of his academical achievements meant nothing at war because Irjah was a genius and died that way.

Another headcanon I have is that Altan parents were truly important people at Speer that he had a high status there and that's why he felt somehow offended by being hidden, treated with shame and being ostracized by people at sinegard, bonus if his father or mother were important warriors, being hidden treated like an object from a young age and when rescued treated like something who was rare a being with no will just or a crazy monster or a general, not even for a single day Altan got to be seen as himself maybe that's why he become such a control freak among Rin and chaghan and everyone or an academic weapon, he wanted the same respect he knew he would have had of his parents were still alive and Speer still existed

Just thinking how kitay is a goal fr people don't speak enough the fact that kitay is an amazing character

First of all he was born into a rich family having a life of comfort and luxury but still kept humble, he treated rin like an human being but without pitying her, he is clever as fuck has the memory of an elephant and he always was gentle with rin specially at that festival scene, he lost everything at a war but still kept well he wasn't mourning or even complaining that much, he accepted anchoring himself to rin into a ritual he didn't understood fuck, believed her and her crazy friends (the cike) endured all the pain and the madness of Rin all the battles and trauma and he was still loyal to her for death and never truly told her about what he was passing through, he is wise and always loyal to his causes and what he stand up for he can fight well and has a great mind, is humble, was able to stay around Rin when she was going mad and enduring everything in silence to don't make her feel more distressed, the boy is a goal fr, even when Rin was being ostracized at sinegard he still was with her, every girl or boy should have a kitay in their life's.

I was just thinking the fact about how Altan was tragic from the beginning, first being kidnapped and tortured acquiring an addiction to a drug you don't have access, when saved finding out your own people is in ashes and that now you have to live and serve the people who did it (without knowing) and study your ass off to acquire perfection at combat and academically totally alone, not even a friend or someone to guide you, knowing that there it was no one at his backbone that he couldn't fail and it all with a crazy goddess nagging him speaking at his head, suffering prejudice from his peers, and I was reading TPW again and when I reached the chapter of the festival I was thinking of how Altan had no one to be at the festival with him or to be with him and he got used to always be the best but then he got at a war were he had to be a leader of unstable people, deal with Battles and the goddes getting more and more string at your head just to at the end die destroying the very thing who was the first to break you and end up being the indirect reason that the other last one of your people is going insane
