Noah nodded in agreement with the words, “Yeah, it definitely was.” he said softly before blowing out a breath at the question, “He’s a U.S. senator now actually so … yeah, he’s made a pretty big deal out of himself. It’s why I avoid mentioning my last name a lot.”
“Oh wow, yeah I can see how that would draw a lot of attention.” Anthony replied, nodding at the man. “Although, at least you know that not a lot of fun people actually know who most senators are.”

“So the way I see it New York was already a fucking mess and everyone is just making a big deal because of a stupid fire in a tent.” Hiram sat on the chairs outside of Jumpstart cafe in Manhattan. “Ya’ll talk so much shit about New York until you’re away from it and instantly call it “the best city on Earth”.”
“People got seriously injured, it is sort of a big deal. People could have been killed.” Anthony replied, not understanding how the man could just be so passive about it. “I love New York, but crappy stuff here happens all the time. That is just the reality.”

Noah nodded, “That’s good, definitely. I still can’t believe that happened, honestly.” he said. It was baffling to think that something could have just caught fire and spread that quickly in such a public area, but he supposed that fires always did spread fast. “Yeah … I don’t like attention much in general. I always hate it now when I go back home and get dragged into all the events and stuff with my dad.”
“It all happened incredibly fast, and it was intense.” Anthony replied, letting out a soft sigh. He was just happy that for the most part people weren’t incredibly hurt. “I can see how that would get annoying after a while. Is he like a famous politician or something?”

Noah nodded, “I heard the smoke got really bad in there though.” he commented, “I bet it wasn’t that much easier to get out of … since it was actually a maze.” he added. The advantage of things not being on fire didn’t fully balance out when you added that factor and there was still a lot of smoke. “I think a lot of people just panicked. I think most people would have helped if they had been able to stay calm. I’m just … better at staying calm in that kind of stuff, I guess? I just wish nobody’d clued in that it was me who saved her.”
“Yeah, the smoke really piled in after a while. Thankfully I was able to get people out fairly quickly.” Anthony replied, nodding at the man. “That makes sense. I surely would have panicked if I was surrounded by more flames and stuff. Yeah, I guess that is fair. I wouldn’t want all kinds of attention after just trying to be helpful.”

Noah resisted the urge to bang his head into the table in front of him as the news station playing on the TV in the corner flashed his and Rachel’s pictures again and eyes began to turn towards him. “It’s not a big deal!” he called out quickly, “I just wanted everybody to get out of that tent, I didn’t even realize she was famous!” he insisted before groaning softly as that didn’t seem to make a difference. He turned back to the person closest to him and sighed, “I swear, about 85% of the reason I came to New York was to avoid the attention about my dad and now this happens. I guess it’s true that no good deed goes unpunished.”
“Yeah, I tried to help people as well. Although, I was caught in the mirror maze, where things were a little less intense.” Anthony replied, sending him a small shrug. “It’s noble that you wanted to help people though, because I know there were a lot of people who were just trying to save themselves. I think helping people in general would have gotten attention, but yeah helping Rachel surely isn’t a good way to fly under the radar.”

Liam moved quickly for the exit, motioning people out with him as he stepped outside to get a glimpse of just how bad things were around them. This was clearly not going well at all. “You got it from here?” he asked Anthony, “Stay safe, alright? Get as far from the fire as you can. I’m gonna make sure there’s nobody else inside.”
“Yeah, I’ve got it from here.” Anthony replied, sending a nod in the man’s direction. He was beyond ready to be out of the maze and hopefully away from the fire. “Just be careful.” Anthony added, before continuing to lead people outside.

Liam nodded, “Good, good.” he said softly as they walked, coughing again as he prayed that he was heading in the right direction. The smell of smoke actually became stronger and he almost panicked for a moment before he realized what that likely meant, “I think we’re almost out, guys!”
As Anthony continued to walk, he could feel the smoke getting heavier. He turned the corner and couldn’t help but let out a small sigh of relieve as the exit came into view. “This way guys, I can see the way out.”

Liam nodded, as they kept moving through the maze, coughing briefly before he spoke again, “I’ll be fine. I’ve got a good sense of direction and I’ve been in way worse situations then this.” he insisted. One of the very few pros to having lived in a drug house until he was ten was that between that and his years as a New York City police officer, there was really nothing he hadn’t seen. “Just get yourself and all of them as far away from here as possible once we’re out.”
“Okay, if you are sure I am not going to fight you on it.” Anthony replied, knowing that the man was a cop and that he clearly knew what he was doing. The last thing he wanted was to fight with someone who was trying to save lives. “That I can do. I’ll lead them to somewhere safe.”

Liam nodded, “Yeah, hopefully.” he agreed, “I think we have … a decent amount of people now? There can’t have been that many in here.” he said, “Let’s get them out, and then I’ll come back through for one more check. Just retrace my steps out the same entrance if I need to.” he said as he began motioning for everyone near him to follow him.
“Okay, that sounds like a plan.” Anthony replied, nodding at the man. It seemed like a pretty solid plan to Anthony, and getting as many answers as possible was surely the best thing to do at the moment. “Just be careful not to get yourself lost again.”

Liam couldn’t help but let out a small laugh at that, “Yeah, that’s probably a good idea.” he said before moving forward, making sure he could still hear Anthony, but far enough that hopefully he could get the attention of people farther off, “Come on, we need everyone to follow our voices so we can lead you out!” he called, relieved to hear a few others call back and begin making their way towards the group.
“I think between the two of us, we should be in good shape.” Anthony added, trying to look around to see if he could see anyone. As much as he just wanted to get out of the maze, he also wanted to help as many people out as possible.

Liam couldn’t deny that he was relieved to spot a familiar face in all this mess, “Can you help me try and get these people together without going far enough that we lose each other again?” he asked, “We just need to get everyone out of here, as quickly as we can.” he added. He really didn’t like how fast the smoke was starting to build up.
“Time to use my teacher voice.” Anthony replied, suddenly glad that he was born to lead. He turned his attention back towards the direction of the other people. “Listen up, if we all work together and don’t panic we will all be out of here faster. I know you are scared, but freaking out won’t help.” Anthony said, raising his voice to be heard.

Liam closed his eyes for a moment as he tried to comprehend just how things like this always managed to happen. He could hear the commotion outside, smell the smoke. He didn’t even need to get the 911 alert on his phone about the fire to know, but he supposed conformation was always a good thing. Right now though, he was in trouble, and so was everyone else in this maze. He couldn’t be sure how close the fire was, but the smoke couldn’t be a very good sign. He had to get everyone out. “Hey! Can anybody else in here hear me?” he called out as loudly as he could, “This is Liam, ah, Officer Liam Barrett. There has been a fire reported in the carnival, we’re going to need to get everyone outside now just to be safe. I think, I think I can find my way out of here, and if you can follow my voice, I can help.”
Anthony was making his way towards the sound of the man’s voice when he finally noticed him through all of the smoke. He could hear people coughing and trying to find their way out of maze. He got closer to Liam, and smiled at the man. “Tell me how I can help, and I will do it.”

“What’s your job?” Maisie asked, though she wasn’t sure if she wanted to know. Even through this conversation, there was an element of jealousy that was growing in her heart. This guy - Anthony - he seemed to have things pretty sweet - though she couldn’t possibly know that with just a few minutes of knowing him. First impressions were just inevitable though. “Have you been to Europe before?”
“I am a high school teacher.” Anthony explained, shrugging at the woman. It wasn’t anything overly fancy, but it paid the bills and that was good enough for him. “I’ll be paying off student loans for years, so I won’t be going anywhere soon. I’ve never even been out of New York.”

“ I say no thanks to the Ferris wheel and hell the fuck yes to the bumper cars, other than that, you’ll find me at my nonexistent bar just around the corner. ”
Well, I suppose that is one way to spend a day. I think personally I am just going to fill myself up with junk food.

“Eh. Well I’m glad you’ve had a good experience. I’ve just had to deal with fuckers and dumbass people on my block.” Maisie admitted, nonchalantly, looking over at the young man again, “I don’t really see the Bronx as my home as much as I see it as my lasting prison sentence but hey - one day I’ll get out. Never been to Europe before - that’ll be a good place to run off to.”
“I don’t think the Bronx is horrible, but I’d love to live somewhere closer to work. Getting there takes forever.” Anthony replied, shrugging at Maisie. He liked being close to his family, but sometimes it wasn’t worth it. “Europe sounds so great right about now.”
