unironically i really do think that daveed diggs as thomas jefferson is my favourite performance of the entire musical just because of how much of an absurd contrast it is to how thomas jefferson was said to be in real life. like jefferson as he exists within the fictional universe of the hamilton musical is unfortunately a very fun character to watch. ‘what’d i miss’ does such a good job at introducing him, its playful and over the top and dramatic, he’s boasting about his life in france as the ensemble gushes over him. hes cocky and self important but daveed diggs is so charismatic in the way he plays it that, tragically, you do feel very enamored by him, which is exactly the point
meanwhile irl jefferson was supposedly much more reserved and polite, as if he was always aware of how he should be perceived (unlike irl hamilton who was apparently still an annoying bitch) and i think its suuuch an interesting creative choice to instead portray him as this larger than life, arrogant, and conceited elitist because that is exactly how someone like hamilton and burr Would have perceived him anyway (i do absolutely maintain that hamilton is told from burrs perspective as much as or even more than it is his own). theres apparently a letter where hamilton complains to washington about how he thinks he sees jefferson smirking at him during their cabinet meetings (i have yet to find it) (someone pls show me) and like. yeah. to hamilton, jefferson is basically the personification of everything thats standing in his way of climbing up the political ladder. it makes sense why in his eyes jefferson would be this snobbish asshole who gleefully dances around on stage as he watches hamiltons life go up in flames
then with burr being the narrator and also something of an ever-present omniscient entity throughout hamilton i think it tracks that he would have a similar interpretation of jefferson given that not only was he witness to a lot of jefferson and madisons scheming, but also because of their own distrust of each other. the scene where jefferson immediately mocks burr and rejects him as his vice president when he wins the election because burr ran against him is one of the most devastating moments for burrs character. in his eyes hamiltons decision to endorse jefferson is a direct attack against him, to him it validates the resentment and bitterness hes been building up towards hamilton throughout the entire musical, of course he would see jefferson’s win as him gloating in his face. burr has once again been forcibly removed being in from the room where it happens, meanwhile thomas jefferson gets to revel in holding his newfound authority and power over burrs head
or maybe everything im saying right now is nonsense and daveed diggs is just an effortlessly charming and magnetic performer who felt compelled by that velvet suit to act as flamboyant and annoying as possible. who can be sure
