BOMBS USED IN MARATHON

pressure cooker design: investigators discovered the two bombs were constructed using ordinary 1.6-gallon pressure cookers. these cookers were packed with gunpowder obtained from fireworks. shrapnel: the bombs were filled with nails and ball bearings, acting as shrapnel when detonated.

detonation: a remote-controlled system using components from a toy car, triggered the explosions. officials also described the detonator as "close-controlled," meaning it had to be set off within a short distance.

EXPLOSION AND MATERIALS

explosion at the finish line: both bombs were stuffed into black backpacks and left on the ground, they detonated near the crowded finish line on boylston street, with a mere 10-13 seconds separating the blasts. the scene left 3 people dead and over 260 injured. evidence at the scene: investigators found remnants of the attack, including pieces of black nylon from the bags, fragments of BBs, and possibly nails.

as mentioned before they used black powder from fireworks. about 10 weeks before the attack, tamerlan walked into a new hampshire fireworks store looking for something powerful.

"I do remember just him asking, well first him having the accent and then him asking for the biggest loudest stuff, and I showed him one other product, but he definitely stressed that he wanted the biggest loudest stuff," cashier Megan Kearns said.

according to her tsarnaev spent about 10 minutes in the store before paying in cash for two "lock and load" mortar kits:

each contained 24 pyrotechnic shells. he paid $200 for one box and got the other free under a store promotion.

toy car detonator: a toy car remote control was used as a detonator, reportedly it's 'easy' to find instructions online on how to make detonators, not necessarily for bombs, but they can be used as such. I found instructions here. which are simply instructions to modify a remote-controlled R/C car to serve as a remote detonator.

The process involves disassembling the R/C car, cutting and splicing wires, fixing the antenna for camouflage, and connecting a battery to activate the modified device. This setup can be used with an igniter for various purposes, such as triggering explosives remotely.

store owners in massachusetts and across the border in new hampshire said federal agents questioned them about sales of a 1.25 volt tenergy battery used in remote and radio-controlled cars, the same kind of battery shown in evidence photos

FBI agents also made inquires at california-based tenergy, which makes the battery packs specifically for use in duratrax toy cars.

during the shootout in watertown the tsarnaev’s had a other explosives, including pipe-bombs and at least one more explosive housed in a pressure cooker.

tamerlan was the one shooting, while dzhokhar was the one lighting pipe-bombs and throwing them at officers.

five pipe-bombs were thrown, three of which exploded

they hurled something at the officers, a pressure cooker bomb, and there was an explosion.

police later found the pressure cooker in a car.

recount of officer who was near the 'blast-zone' when the pressure cooker was thrown/rolled at them:

"You could feel the percussion, but all's I can remember was like someone putting a white screen in front of your face. Gray black smoke, and then you felt stuff raining down on you. It was all the shrapnel metal"

however, one of the clips had unclipped which resulted in not enough pressure building off as it could've. if it had been placed instead of thrown, it would have caused more destruction.

FIREWORK POWDER USAGE IN DORM ROOM

a couple of months before the attacks, azamat tazhayakov had joined dzhokhar and some other friends letting off fireworks along the banks of the charles river in boston.

he was not surprised when he found more fireworks in dzhokhar's dorm room when entered on 18 april, three days after the marathon bombings.

however he had observed the powder had been emptied from the firework tube in the room. they'd seen about seven red tubular fireworks, 6-8 in long, inside the backpack.

dias kadyrbayev had also been alarmed by the discovery of a jar of vaseline in the room. He told tazhayakov that he believed their friend had used the vaseline "to make bombs".
