En 1967, el MoMA presentó una exposición con la obra de Garry Winogrand, Diane Arbus y Lee Friedlander como representantes de los nuevos caminos que tomaba la fotografía.
Fotos casuales, tomadas desde perspectivas subjetivas e innovadoras de la cotidianidad americana mostraban un mundo de gasolineras y freaks, de cuerpos en sombras y luces que a nadie le cegaban.
El mundo arropado por la espontaneidad que nadie veía, era el tema de las miradas de estos fotógrafos.
